Abstract

This study took the constructionists stance scrutinizing the language used by the grade school students in the public schools of the Division of Bataan in terms of ethnicity. Specifically, it aims to analyze the language bias present in the subjects of Social Studies (Araling Panlipunan) and Values Education (Edukasyon sa Pagpapahalaga) used by the first three grade level students in the Division of Bataan with a total of six (6) books. Each textbook was evaluated using the Critical Discourse Analysis as a research methodology to systematically analyze, describe and interpret the language used by the author that may include socio-political constructs leading to language bias. Themes such as underrepresentation of other indigenous or cultural community groups, overgeneralized description of Filipino cultural behavior, beliefs and attitudes, underrepresentation of indigenous minority groups, cultural insensitivity, misconception about indigenous or cultural community groups, discrimination against indigenous people, misconception about Filipinos, focus on low landers and inappropriate cultural terms are used to enhance the analysis of the textbooks. The findings indicate that there are excerpts that have language bias in terms of ethnicity. The researcher included proposed alternatives for the excerpts taken from the textbooks so as not to be biased in terms of ethnicity. The research highlights the importance of looking into how the language use can affect how the readers, specifically the young students, view the various ethnic groups and cultural communities.

Abstract

The study is conducted to identify the impact of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) using CSR Index disclosure provided by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI).The researchers used the structural equation model to identify the impact of CSR to firm profitability and firm value. CSR was measured using CSR disclosures index, firm profitability was measured through the use of Return on Assets, Return on Equity and Debt to Equity Ratio, while firm value was measured by Tobin’s Q. Results disclosed that CSR managed to positively impact the firm value. Conversely, CSR failed to explain the changes in profitability. With regards to the moderating variables, firm age was found to positively affect both the profitability and firm value. Firm size, on the other hand, only showed significant impact when moderating CSR and firm value, hence it is insignificant when used as moderator for CSR and profitability. Overall, the results showed that CSR is a good independent variable to measure firm value. These findings provide valuable information not only to the management of companies interested to improve their CSR, profitability and firm value, but also to regulators, shareholders and other stakeholders. Finally, the result of the study may provide additional insights to future researchers in undertaking further study on the impact of corporate social responsibility.

Abstract

The study analyzed the relationship of Corporate Social Responsibility and Firm value of entities engaged in Food, Beverage and Tobacco industry in the Philippines, as mediated by Corporate Governance with firm’s size and age as moderator. A causal- explanatory research was utilized which used secondary data, particularly financial statements, Sustainability Reports and Annual Corporate Governance Reports of the twenty-four (24) publicly listed Food, Beverage, and Tobacco companies for the periods 2015 to 2019. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) was measured using CSR disclosure index as mapped in GRI Sector provided by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), Corporate Governance (CG) was measured through Corporate Governance Mechanism, while firm value was measured by Tobin’s Q. Thus, Structural Equation Model was used to identify the Corporate Social Responsibility, Corporate Governance and Firm Value relationship. Results disclosed that CSR has a significant and positive impact on firm value, while on the other hand, CG have been found out to have an insignificant and positive impact on Firm value. Similarly, CSR Index disclosures showed to have an insignificant and positive impact on CG. But, results unveil that Corporate Governance has no mediating effect on CSR-Firm value relationship, hence it is insignificant when used as mediator for CSR and firm value. Conversely, findings uncovered that firm age and size have a moderating effect on CSR-FV relationship.
