The phenomenon of dualism in practising the faith among Catholics who converted from Sumbanese ethnic religion (Marapu) is a real challenge faced by the Catholic Church in Sumba. Such dualism is transparent in the practices of using simultaneously both Catholic and Marapu rites in the popular religiosity of Sumbanese Catholics. Both Catholic priests and Marapu ritual leaders are asked by the people, on different occassions, to perform rituals for their benefit. These two kinds of ritual leaders are equally considered as mediators of communication between human beings and the supernatural world. Such a practice reveals a deep encounter between Catholic and Sumbanese ethnic religion regarding the form, direction and means of communication between humans and supernatural beings. The author’s fieldwork at Weepangali in the district of Sumba Barat Daya, from January to August 2013, reveals a new concept and understanding of mediation, that is a mixture between a Catholic concept and a Marapu one. Some supernatural figures in Marapu religion are equated with those in Catholic devotions. This new understanding, however, is not formally and institutionally recognized in either the Marapu or Catholic hierarchies, but rather found more informally and spontaneously in the religious experience of Sumbanese Catholics. This phenomenon indicates the strong mutual influence between Catholic and Marapu experience, after a prolonged and ongoing encounter. This essay looks at human trafficking as the underbelly of an unregulated global economy. Using data collated by the UN and studies undertaken by independent research institutes, the global pattern of trafficking is outlined before focusing on Southeast Asia, a key hub in this modern form of slavery. Key characteristics and motivations are delineated with reference to UN definitions and legislation in Southeast Asia. Attention is given to the global need for cheap labour, sex workers and the widespread trafficking of children. Then, the phenomenon is seen through the eyes of faith drawing on four key biblical attitudes: upholding human dignity (protection), reaching to the heart (prevention), naming the sin (prosecution), and extending Gospel community (partnering). This paper gives some basic ideas regarding the relationship between globalisation and the Second Vatican Council in Asia as a starting point for more detailed studies in the future. The first part discusses the situation of the churches at the edge of Asian societies and Asian socio-cultural contexts as influenced by globalisation. Then some social concerns are outlined such as poverty, authoritarian regimes and ecological dangers where the church and Asian societies encounter each other. Church engagement in these issues is justified by reference to a number of Counciliar documents such as the Gaudium et spes Constitution and the Diginitatis humanae Declaration. The final part outlines a number of problems such as inculturation, inter-religious dialogue and religious-cultural dialogue. The author emphasises that this paper is not a theological evaluation, but rather a sociological one. Story-telling often conveys a message about a particular problem. The bitter stories of victims as recorded here are just a small part of many such experiences which pierce our conscience, abusing the dignity that is within each one of us. Besides these stories, this essay includes data from victims to remind us that today we face an extremely serious problem in human trafficking. From the cases handled by the Women’s Division of TRUK-F (a faith-based human rights NGO), it is clear that many parties are responsible, commencing with individuals and families, but including government institutions. The problem of human trafficking can befall anyone. TRUK-F has struggled to accompany victims while active in awarenessbuilding campaigning about the problem. The number of cases increases starkly by the day while the bitter stories of the victims, together with the anxiety and restlessness of their families, should invite the concern of everybody to engage in assisting victims while advocating for the ending of this inhuman trade. It is not so easy to explain, let alone suggest solutions to the problem of human trafficking as a concrete challenge to basic human rights. As with other social problems that have multiple causes, so too does human trafficking have many causes. In this article the author intends to elucidate one important aspect in human trafficking, the susceptibility of women to become victims. By placing human trafficking within the context of violence towards women, the author intends to propose a response to the question regarding why women are so susceptible as victims. The author, a member of the National Commission on Violence against Women, presents data from the Commission on domestic violence and the trafficking of women and girls over the past dozen years (2001-2013). Through false promises of well paying jobs and the provision of false documents, the trafficking victims, often already in debt in their home of origin, are lured into further debt in their distant place of forced employment. Human trafficking, which has become a serious problem in our time, also existed centuries ago, especially when slavery was commonly accepted. The Book of Genesis shares the story of the selling by his brothers of a person named Joseph. Different from human trafficking these days, the reason for selling Joseph was more about envy than money. Envy triggered the brothers’ plot to eliminate Joseph from their family. Whatever the reason, in Egypt Joseph was put on the auction block and bought and sold as a bill of goods. The Joseph-Judah story tracks the first human trafficking case in the Bible inviting the reader to be aware of how people are bought and sold. The sellers –Jospeh’s brothers and especially Judah – do not want to be known as the culprits. Nobody is willing to admit commiting this crime, instead, one always pretends to be innocent. Meanwhile Joseph’s identity is stripped away as the story continues. Human trafficking, always involves the loss of one’s social networks coupled with elimination of one’s identity. A social trend that should trigger an emotional reaction in Indonesia as a nation that has enjoyed independence for the past 68 years, is none other than human trafficking. Indonesia is listed at 114 in the register of this modern form of slavery with around 220 thousand victims9 . Globally, there are around 29.8 million victims of human trafficking. Indonesia is one of the 17 source, transit and destination countries, involving criminal activities such as sex slavery, forced labour and child procurement. This situation is pretty evenly spread among all of Indonesia’s Provinces. The roots, the process and a way forward are highlighted in this brief study.
