Abstract

After a sectarian attack on the Shia community in Sampang, Indonesia, they live in refugee camps. Even though the refugees have now returned, the reconciliation efforts took quite a long time. The Shia community had to live in refugee camps for about ten years. This paper argues that the clientelistic structure is the main obstacle to repatriation. Amid social and economic marginalization and the limited role of the government in fulfilling their basic rights in the refugee camps, the Shia of Sampang can still hold on to fulfill their citizenship and hope to return home through informal networks and mechanisms. This article shows that although with the help of various parties, the Sampang Shia community can gradually gain legal status, political participation, and (limited) economic rights as citizens, it is still difficult for them to regain their membership in Sampang socially and culturally.

Abstract

Education and politics are like inseparable currencies. The development of Islamic education in Indonesia, even across history, cannot be separated from political penetration. Politics makes regulation of policies in Islamic education. The rapid development of Islamic education depends on the intimate relationship between Islamic education figures and the government. In the history of the colonial period, the politics of setting policies on Islamic institutions tended to be discriminatory and gave benefits to the colonialists. During the old order era, the presence of the Ministry of Religion on January 3, 1946 , politically fought for Islamic education in Indonesia, which was based on the aspirations of Muslims so that religious education should be taught in schools, in addition to the development of madrasas themselves. During the Old Order era, there was already concern for madrasas, but the political conditions dominated by NASAKOM's ideas caused madrasas to not develop significantly. The New Order era was a government that gave a positive and constructive response to the development of Islamic educational institutions, madrasas, which in the end gave recognition by making madrasas part of the national education system. And in the current era, Islamic educational institutions in general and madrasas in particular have become the focus of many people because in addition to the same curriculum as the one in the Ministry of National Education, they are considered capable of providing internalization of religious character and competing with other public education institutions.

Abstract

Kegelisahan terhadap fanatisme ormas-ormas Islam di Indonesia, termasuk di dalamnya fanatisme aliran mazhab fikih, mengantarkan penulis untuk melakukan kajian ini. Keyakinan bahwa pendidikan merupakan piranti penting dalam perubahan suatu bangsa dan tujuan pendidikan adalah untuk melahirkan perubahan sosial, maka penulis berusaha untuk mengurai persoalan fanatisme fikih tersebut dalam kerangka pendidikan. Harapannya, melalui metode pendidikan fikih yang toleran akan mampu meruntuhkan sekat-sekat fanatisme dalam masyarakat. Penulis menyebut kerangkan pendidikan fikih ini dengan istilah "Fikih Education Beyond The Wall".

Abstract

This article aims to examine the role and efforts of Dhamma TV, a Buddhist-based television station in Malang City, in building peace and harmony between religious communities. The study also shows the normative-theological construction that underlies these efforts. Because religion and media have great potential for peacebuilding. However, both can also be an obstacle to peace. Thus, religion-based media that consistently strives for harmony and peace become a significant aspect of a pluralistic society. This study found that Dhamma TV is a religion-based media that consistently broadcasts programs that contain the values of togetherness, tolerance, and peace. Television avoids programs that contain violence and have the potential to break the unity and harmony of society. Dhamma TV commonly presents cultural programs and social activities from various religions, so it is considered a medium for interfaith adhesives. The effort to build peace and harmony between religious communities is an expression and implementation of Buddhist teachings. Buddhism emphasizes mutual love and kindness to all living beings. In addition, Buddha emphasizes valuing and respecting the lives of others as his own as well.

Abstract

The tarekat's involvement in environmental conservation efforts has not been explored much. It is because tarekat is generally only associated with efforts to strengthen spirituality. Sufism and Tarekat are often not involved in discussions on social and ecological issues. This article aims to examine the Rowobayan congregation related to environmental ethics and environmental conservation efforts. Rowobayan is a tarekat whose validity is recognized by the majority of Muslims and has a substantial role in the development of the tarekat in Indonesia. Thus, his teachings on environmental ethics can be ensured by Islamic law. So, the assumption that environmental ethics in it is influenced by the syncretistic mysticism movement that is widely developing in Indonesia. The study found that the values of environmental preservation in the teachings of Sufism in the Tarekat Rowobayan are based on the concept of the unity of existence, the caliphate and servitude, the values of universal compassion (rahmatan lil'alamin), and the zuhud. The actualization of these values in environmental conservation is by being wise and respecting nature, being active in taking roles and responsibilities to preserve nature, loving and having good character in interacting with nature, and simplicity in the consumption and management of natural resources.

Abstract

Sebagai miniatur keberagaman agama di Indonesia, Kasembon memiliki strategi perdamaian yang khas. Penelitian ini akan mendeskrispsikan strategi mayoritas, dalam hal ini Islam, dalam membina perdamaian dan mengayomi minoritas di basis multikultural Kasembon Malang. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa mimbar toleransi di Kecamatan Kasembon dibangun atas media atau ruang publik yang dapat mempertemukan warga lintas agama, di antaranya: 1) bersih desa dan perayaan HUT RI, 2) perayaan hari besar keagamaan, 3) makam dan selametan. Strategi membina kerukunan yang dilakukan oleh pemuka agama di Kasembon diwujudkan dalam beberapa hal. Pertama, keunikan dalam pengucapan hari raya dan doa bersama lintas agama. Kedua, penguatan basis ekonomi umat untuk meminimalisasi proselitisasi. Ketiga, khutbah dan ceramah kegamaan dilakukan tanpa menyerukan kebencian bagi pihak yang berbeda agama.

Abstract

This conceptual and interpretive article discusses again one of the conceptions of tolerance that deserves to be considered for its meaning and actualization, namely costly tolerance. This conception originating from the Christian tradition has a strong moral imperative to transform the practice of tolerance into a more perfect dimension as a virtue. In this lens, perhaps tolerance in a pseudo, shallow, and trite minimalistic degree, which often falls into an attitude of indifference or indifference that does not require any sacrifice, becomes meaningless, and does not deserve the word tolerance. The future of religions in Indonesia with its diversity amid a storm that always pulls the religious pendulum towards extremism, so it is still open to acts of crime in the name of religion. It is not sufficiently paid for by tolerance which is full of falsehood, and in this critical conception, will require a lot of sacrifices to be paid. Artikel konseptual dan interperatif ini mendiskusikan kembali salah satu konsepsi toleransi yang patut untuk dipertimbangkan makna dan aktualisasinya, yaitu costly tolerance. Konsepsi yang berasal dari tradisi Kristiani ini memiliki imperatif moral yang kuat untuk mentransformasikan praktik toleransi pada matra yang lebih sempurna sebagai virtue. Dalam kaca mata ini, barangkali toleransi dalam kadar minimalis yang semu, dangkal, dan basa-basi, yang seringkali justri terjatuh dalam sikap indifference atau acuh tak acuh yang tidak membutuhkan pengorbanan apa-apa, menjadi kehilangan makna dan tidak patut menyandang kata toleransi. Masa depan agama-agama di Indonesia dengan keragamannya di tengah badai yang selalu menarik pendulum keagamaan ke arah ekstrimisme sehingga masih membuka diri bagi aksi kejahatan atas nama agama, tidak cukup dibayar dengan toleransi yang penuh kepalsuan, dan dalam pandangan konsepsi kritis ini, akan membutuhkan banyak pengorbanan yang perlu dibayar.

Abstract

The paper discusses the underlying method and context of interpretation of legal verses as set forth by Hamka in his magnum opus, Tafsir al-Azhar. It looks into the historical background and dynamics of his interpretation of legal verses that bring forth significance breakthrough in the articulation of classical theoretical perspective of fiqh, maqasid (higher objective of Islamic law), maslahah (public good) and fundamental of syariah. The study is based on library research using qualitative and scientific approach. Relevant data were collected from primary and secondary sources and analyzed through descriptive, analytical and comparative technique. The finding shows that the Tafsir has bring forth significance breakthrough in legal interpretation that shed light on philosophical and contextual meaning of the ayah, projecting rational dan liberal understanding of the text, independent from classical interpretation and doctrine of traditional ruling and school of thought. It shed lights on universal dan dynamic religious spirit and reassertion and reconstruction of ijtihad and socio-legal reform, arguing for the significant local dynamics, norms and ethics of fiqh nusantara (Malay-Indonesian archipelago) which addresses contemporary needs of modern Indonesia’s complex multicultural and cosmopolite society.    Kajian ini membahas metode penelitian hukum yang dilakukan oleh Hamka dalam Tafsir al-Qur'an karangannya, Tafsir al-Azhar. Kajian ini bertujuan untuk melihat alur dan konteks pemikiran Hamka dalam kajian hukum dan syariah terkait dengan aspek pembaharuan ideologi hukum, fikih, maqasid, pemahaman maslahah dan ushul syariah. Metodologi penelitian adalah kualitatif dari jenis penelitian kepustakaan. Bahan penelitian diperoleh dari sumber primer dan sekunder yang terkait dan dianalisis secara deskriptif, analitis dan komparatif. Hasil kajian menyimpulkan bahwa Hamka mempunyai kesederhanaan dan keluasan pandangan hukum yang tidak terikat oleh doktrin dan ideologi mazhab. Ini menunjukkan pandangan klasik dan universal yang mempertahankan nilai kebebasan dan ijtihad serta semangat hukum yang rasional dan kontekstual yang dipengaruhi oleh fikih nusantara dengan tujuan mendekatkan pemahaman hukum dengan nuansa kehidupan masyarakat dan konteks perkembangan Islam di Indonesia yang modern dan kosmopolit.

Abstract

The Kasembon Muslim community in Malang Regency, East Java, lives in a multicultural society. They have the awareness to build religious tolerance and harmony even though the basis of their religious understanding tends to be fundamentally exclusive. This study aims to find out how the construction of fundamentalist Muslim society in terms of tolerance and fostering religious harmony. Research finds that the Kasembon Muslim community is exclusive in matters considered theological teachings, such as various rituals of religious worship considered sacred. But on the other hand, they are willing to be inclusive when dealing with things considered profane. Such as various issues related to humanity, society, and culture. Tolerance and harmony between religious communities are supported by sharing traditions, like Bersih Desa, and celebrating Independence Day.   Masyarakat Muslim Kasembon Kabupaten Malang Jawa Timur hidup dalam komuitas yang multiultural. Mereka memiliki kesadaran untuk membangun toleransi dan kerukunan beragama walupun basis pemahaman keagamaan mereka cenderung ekslusif-fundamental. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana konstruksi masyarakat Muslim fundamentalis dalam toleransi dan membina kerukunan beragama penelitian menemukan bahwa Masyarakat muslim Kasembon  bersikap eksklusif dalam persoalan-persoalan yang dianggap sebagai ajaran teologis, seperti berbagai ritus ibadah keagamaan yang dianggap sakral. Namun di sisi lain mereka bersedia bersikap inklusif ketika berhubungan dengan hal-hal yang dianggap profan. Seperti berbagai isu yang berkaitan dengan kemanusiaan, sosial dan budaya. Toleransi dan harmoni antar umat beragama didukung oleh berbagi momen tardisi-tradisi misalnya ketika bersih desa dan momen menyambut perayaan hari kemerdekaan.

Abstract

Jombang is a plural area and has a unique character. It is well known as the base area and birthplace of NU, the largest Islamic mass organization in Indonesia. On the other hand, Jombang is also the basis of a distinctive Christian community, namely the Gereja Kristen Jawi Wetan (GKJW). This article will examine how Sufistic values influence and become the basis of thinking for the Muslim community in Jombang and the Gereja Kristen Jawi Wetan (GKJW) congregation so that they can coexist peacefully and empathetically. This study found that the internalization of Sufistic reasoning in Jombang society, both Muslim and GKJW Christian, gave rise to attitudes that support harmonious relations between religious communities. Sufistic values act as a meeting point between different religions to give rise to social behavior that places more emphasis on the essential values of religion, love, and tolerance which in turn can minimize differences that can cause tension.   Jombang merupakan daerah yang plural dan memiliki karakter unik. Ia dikenal sebagai daerah basis dan kelahiran NU sebagai ormas Islam terbesar di Indonesia, disisi lain Jombang juga merupakan basis komunitas Kristen yang khas, yaitu jamaat Gereja Kristen Jawi Wetan (GKJW). Artikel ini akan mengkaji bagaimana nilai-nilai sufistik mempengaruhi dan menjadi landasan berfikir komunitas Muslim di Jombang dan jamaat Gereja Kristen Jawi Wetan (GKJW), sehingga mereka dapat hidup berdampingan dengan damai dan penuh empati. Kajian ini menemukan bahwa internalisasi nalar sufistik dalam masyarakat Jombang, baik yang beragama Islam maupun Kristen GKJW memunculkan sikap yang mendukung terjadinya hubungan harmonis atar umat beragama. Nilai-nilai  sufistik berperan sebagai titik temu antar agama yang berbeda sehingga memunculkan prilaku sosial yang lebih menekankan kepada nilai-nilai esensi agama, cinta kasih dan  toleransi yang akirnya dapat meminimalisir perbedaan-perbedaan yang dapat menimbulkan ketegangan.
