Abstract

Abstract The objective of the present study is to evaluate parts of wild banana plant as a ruminant feed through the in vitro experiment. Parts of wild banana plant (pseudostem, leaves, fronds and banana stalks) were collected from two districts in Jambi Province. Wild banana leaves have similar nutritive value to Napier grass but their dry matter percentage was less than 10% resulted less benefit for ruminant feed. The mean values for the in vitro dry matter (DM) digestibility of pseudostem, fronds, leaves and banana stalks were 35%, 33%, 26% and 40 % respectively, while the mean values for the in vitro organic matter (OM) digestibility of pseudostem, fronds, leaves and banana stalks were 40%, 42%, 34% and 48 % respectively. It can be concluded that wild banana could be potentially used in the ration of ruminants. Keywords : wild banana, nutritive value, in vitro

Abstract

Indonesia has a huge potency of medical plants. However the utilization for livestock health and production are limited. A research was conducted to determine the efficacy of Muntinga calabura L. leaves to reduce bacterial population in milk using postmilking teat dip method with Muntinga calabura leaves solution in the concentration of 20%, 30% and 40%. The degree of mammary inflammation was observed using California Mastitis Test (CMT). The result showed that the bacterial population in milk were reduced by 79.36%, 71.12% and 73.84% with Muntinga calabura solution (in the concentration of 20%, 30% and 40%, respectively). The bacterial counts among the treatment groups were similar (P>0.05). Compared with synthetic antiseptic povidone iodine, the reduction of bacterial population in milk did not differ (P>0.05) with the Muntinga calabura groups. Postmilking teat dip using povidone iodine reduced bacterial population in milk by 79.36%. Moreover, the CMT reading were decrease by 39.96%, 34.76% and 31.15% in the Muntinga calabura groups (solution concentration of 20%, 30% and 40% respectively). The CMT results of Muntinga calabura groups were comparable (P>0.05) with iodine group (35.16%). In conclusion, our results indicated that Muntinga calabura leaf can be use as an alternative teat dip antiseptic to reduce bacterial population in milk and it can be use for sub clinical mastitis treatment.

Abstract

The study aimed to evaluate the physical quality of broiler meat that give commercial ration partially substituted by corn. The study used 80 broiler chickens aged 21 days. Chicken is divided into 4 (four) groups of body weight as replicates, each group consisted of 5 replicates chickens. The treatments were given in this study consisted of substitution of 0%, 10, 20% and 30% by commercial ration of corn. The results showed that the use of corn as a substitute for commercial ration significantly (P <0.05) to the water holding capacity, cooking loss and meatbone ratio, but not significant (P> 0.05) on the pH value of the meat. Water holding capacity on the use of corn 30% (34.40%) is significantly higher than the use of maize 0% (15.7%), 10% (22.33%) and 20% (23.78%). Water holding capacity on the use of corn 10% and 20% in commercial diet showed no significant difference. Cooking loss meat on the use of corn 30% (26.32%) is lower than the use of maize 0% (39.47%), 10% (34.21%) and 20% (36.11%), while the meatbone ratio treatment 10% corn (3.83) is higher than the treatment 20% and 30% corn. The range of pH values in this study was 6.5 to 6.8 with the average of 6.63. Substitution of commercial rations by as much as 30% corn gives the value of the high water holding capacity and low cooking loss, while meatbone ratio highest found in 10% of substitution treatment. Keywords: physical quality, broiler meat, corn

Abstract

Abstract

An experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of ration containing protected fatty acids on carcass quality and wholesale cuts of livestock. The protected fatty acids was in the form of dried carboxylate salt mixture (DCM). The experiments  were assigned to 2x2 factorial model with two feeding treatment P0 (without DCM) and P1 (with DCM) and two animals types J0 (cattle) and J1 (buffaloes). The animals were slaughtered at 315.50±6.96 kg for buffaloes and 289,88 ±6.03 kg for cattle. The results showed that interaction was found between the two factors on striploin. DCM supplementation not significantly all parameters. The buffalo had significantly lower carcass percentage,  loin eye area, tenderloin, silverside, fat colour score compared the cattle. It is concluded that DCM supplementation in the ration of buffalo cannot improve the quality of carcass and wholesale cuts. Keywords: carcass, wholesale cuts, buffalo, cattle, DCM.

Abstract

The research aimed was to assess the technical, institutional, commercial, financial and economic feasibility of integration model of cattle production with sugarcane farming and its effect on the prosperity of farmers in Kayu Aro Barat District, Kerinci Regency. The method used was survey method with Stratified Random Sampling technique.  Sampling technque consisted of 2 strata i.e. strata I was sugarcane farmers who integrate to cattle production, and strata II was sugarcane farmers who not integrate to cattle production. Each index used present value from cost and benefit flows that were NPV, Net B/C ratio and IRR. For assessing the effect of integration model of cattle production with sugarcane farming on the prosperity of farmer was used path analysis. The study found that integration cattle production with sugarcane farming in Kayu Aro Barat District, Kerinci Regency  was feasible.  Technical, commercial, financial and economical  aspects were partially affect to farmers’ prosperity  in Kayu Aro Barat District, Kerinci Regency.   Key words : Integration model, catlle production, sugarcane
