Abstract

This research aims to improve speaking ability on speaking for specific purposes class of class A1 students of English Education Department students, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, PGRI University of Yogyakarta in the academic year of 2012/2013. The effort which was done is using role-playing as a technique in teaching and learning activities. This collaborative and participative action research consisted of three cycles, with plan, action, observation, and reflection in each cycle. The participants were the students of class A1 of English Education Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, PGRI University of Yogyakarta. The data were collected by means of interviewing, recording technique, observing, and assessing. The qualitative data were analyzed through data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing, while the quantitative data was analyzed descriptively by counting the mean score and the score percentage of the result of the observation. The results of research show that using role-playing technique can improve students’ speaking ability on speaking for specific purposes class. It can be indicated by the improvement of the activity of speaking classroom English, the interaction between teacher and students, and the students and teacher’s attention. The improvement of speaking ability on classroom English is also supported by the improvement of students’ achievement in speaking performance to a mean score of 161,18 or 70,579% (cycle I), 176,31 or 76,956% (cycle II), and 198,16 or 85,797% (cycle III).

Abstract

This paper examines the role of elements of English sentences by employing the approach ofthematic role assignment. The emphasis is on how the positioning of words and phrases insyntactic structure helps determine the roles that the referents of NPs play in the situationdescribed by the sentences. The results reveal that the position of an NP’s determines itsthematic role and. There is a relevance between deep syntactic structure and the assignmentof thematic roles for every NP in the sentence.

Abstract

Korean language has become one of the famous foreign languages in Indonesia. Itentered Indonesia through their culture such as songs, movies and dramas. Indonesia people, in thisstudy the students of STIKES Banyuwangi, learn the Korean language through subtitles given inevery movie and drama, and also lyrics of a song. The subtitles are usually written in English or inbahasa Indonesia, while the lyrics of a song usually written in English, Hangul (Korean alphabet) andKorean language written in Latin alphabet. Using the subtitles and the lyrics, the Indonesia people canlearn and use the Korean language. Nevertheless, their Korean language is not used appropriatelybecause they do not understand the whole meaning of a conversation and the grammar and strucure ofa sentence so they only use several words that have specific meaning. They acquire the words thatusually appear in the subtitles and try to translate it into Bahasa Indonesia by using ‘Google Translate’or dictionary. Most of the words are related to feeling and nickname in relationship. Yet, because thereis still little number of people understanding Korean language, the Indonesian teenagers only use itwith their peer who also like the Korean culture. They do not use it in a formal situation or in asituation when they know the person they speak to does not understand Korean language. When theyspeak in Korean language, code mixing appears. Entertainers, particularly singer, actor and actress,become the major factor that motivates the students to learn Korean language. It has influenced thestudents in STIKES Banyuwangi and as a result several of them use Korean words in theircommunication.

Abstract

This research looks at listening as one factor that gives contribution toward speaking among high school students. The study attempts to reveal through data analysis, in the form of students. score from each variable that both have correlation. Further the objective of the study is also to find out the extent of influence contributed by listening toward speaking. The research applies library study and field study (instrument designing and test performing both for listening and speaking). The theory used for analysis deals with listening and speaking correlation from language learning review. The result of the study demonstrates that the correlation of listening as the independent variable with speaking as dependent variable is positive. It also proves that with a unit of program or treatment given toward listening class, there will be a significant improvement equals with 3.134 times from previous speaking score for the same sample. For the analysis of data, the extent of correlation between two varibales is shown as low. It indicates that even though listening do have positive correlation towarde speaking, it is not the only deminant factor to determine success in speaking.

Abstract

This paper describes about the phenomenon of slang language on social network, namelyfacebook and twitter. Slang in this paper belongs to sociolinguistics study, especially sociolect. This isa descriptive qualitative method, which consists of three phase: data collection, data analysis, andpresentation of the result of data analysis. The data were collected by observing the netters utterance.Data were analysed through two phases. First, analyzing the meaning of the slang. Second, wasanalysing the categories of the slang.There are four point findings in this study. Firstly, the various forms of slang expression unitsare words and phrases. Secondly, the variety of linguistic processes forming units slang expression areby adding sound, erasing sound, changing vocal, replacing consonant, shifting sound, returning sound,repeating, and changing spell. Thirdly, the source languages of various slang reference units are fromnational language, regional languages, and foreign languages. Fourthly, the communicative functionsof various units of slang expressions are informative function, directive function, expressive function,komisif function, phatic function, and poetic function. Finally, from the finding of those four points inthis study, we know that slang language on facebook and twitter has its own uniqueness compared toother types of language.

Abstract

research is entitled “An Analysis of Techniques of Adjustment in Translating ReligiousText Vocabularies (A Study on Series of A Handbook on the Revelation to John)”. It is about howreligious text vocabularies are translated by using technique of adjustment. It is aimed to find types oftechniques of adjustment and their subtypes.This research uses qualitative method to analyze the data. Techniques of analyzing data in thisresearch consist of 3 components; they are (1) reducing the data, (2) explaining the data, and (3)taking a conclusion. Reducing data is a process of selecting, focusing, simplifying and abstracting thedata. Explaining the data is a process of organizing information and arranging the completenarration. Taking a conclusion is a process of drawing conclusion from the data. The data sources ofthis research are A Handbook on the Revelation to John and its Indonesian translation entitled SeriPedoman Penafsiran Alkitab Wahyu Kepada Yohanes.After conducting the research, the researcher finds 73 data. Alteration technique is in the firstposition with 55 data or 74.2%. Then, addition technique is in the second position with 12 data or16.4%. The last is subtraction technique with 6 data or 8.2%. Addition technique is divided into 3classifications, i.e. obligatory specifications (3 data or 4.1%), amplifications (7 data or 9.6%), andclassifiers (2 data or 2.7%). Subtraction technique is divided into 2 classifications, i.e. conjunctions(3 data or 4.1%) and formulae (3 data or 4.1%). Alteration technique is divided into 7 classifications,i.e. sounds (15 data or 20.5%), categories (6 data or 8.2%), word classes (2 data or 2.7%), order (6data or 8.2%), clause and sentence structure (1 datum or 1.4%), semantic problems involving singleword (19 data or 26%), and semantic problems involving exocentric expression (6 data or 8.2%).This research is expected to open wide opportunities and challenges to academicians,646333255especially those in translation linguistics sphere to deepen their research and study,especially in translating the holy religious texts in order to be a new contribution to the translationfields.

Abstract

This essay is under auspice of structural linguistics, which is mean to describe the prepositionnganti in Javanese language, understanding, how to use, what kind of categorial coconstituent whichis determined the presence, what is function, and what semantic role of prepositional phrases.Therefore, this essay uses descriptive qualitative method and a contact approach. This essay shows theresult the presence of the preposition nganti in the sentence is not determined by the filler predicatescategory, but is determined by the coconstituent category which can be seen from the use. Categoricaltypes of constituents that determine the presence of the preposition nganti are five categories, namelynouns (concrete, abstract), adjectives, numerals, adverbs (temporal, qualitative, size), and verbs(active, adversative). The preposition nganti function is as a boundary ending marker (time, place,number, size), a purpose marker, and an effect marker.

Abstract

English as one of the international languages has been learned by the students of Faculty of Letters in Gajayana University. In learning English as foreign language, most learners have problem in pronunciation, especially in the way they pronounce the sound of the target language. Mispronunciations which are produce by the learners is caused by the interference of the source language or first language. The object of this research is the students of Faculty of Letters in Gajayana University 2005/2006 intake who are native speakers of Javanese and have been done phonology class. Some specific sounds are discussed in these research namely English sounds of inter-dental fricative,  and alveolar approximant. The finding of the research are some interferences occur in pronouncing those sounds, they are 1) voiceless inter-dental fricative  is pronounced using voiceless dental stop , aspirated voiceless dental stop , voiced dental stop , and voiceless palato-alveolar affricate . 2).Voiced inter-dental fricative is pronounce using voiceless dental stop , aspirated voiceless dental stop , voiced dental stop , and voiceless palato-alveolar affricate . 3).Voiced alveolar approximant  is pronounced using voiced alveolar trill. 4). the possible reasons for the interferences made are based on the similarity of characteristics in the state of vocal cords, place of articulation, and manner of articulations.

Abstract

This study was designed to investigate the role of „Hot Potatoes‟ in promoting autonomous learning of the English education students at Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta. This study was conducted on some reasons: first, autonomous learning is very significant in the success of learners‟ learning, and to make the learners implement autonomous learning is quite tricky. Second, the use of Hot Potatoes as the software is very simple and fun to publish any education materials online, and as a result, the students like the program. Therefore, it is very challenging for the teacher to find a way to promote autonomous learning to the students through the use of a simple education software called „Hot Potatoes‟. The study was aimed at exploring the roles of Hot Potatoes in English teaching and learning. Further, it also explored the advantages of the Hot Potatoes in developing the students‟ ability or habit in having autonomy in their learning. This research was a qualitative case study in nature since it dealt with a holistic description. The setting of the research was Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta with 10 students who have implemented Hot Potatoes in designing teaching materials for them to use at schools. The procedure to collect the data was through questionnaires and interviews with the participants. In analyzing the data, the researcher first categorized the data gained from the questionnaires and then extracted the information from the data collected through the interview process. The data were then grouped into categories and interpreted in accordance with the research questions. The study found that students first had awareness to be better in mastering English due to their online publishing the teaching materials developed with Hot Potatoes. They were aware that by publishing materials online, people all around the globe would have a chance to stop by and read the materials. This awareness led them to learn by themselves on the grammar of the sentences they wrote. As a result, they started looking up grammar books to check if the grammar was appropriate or not. The same process also happened to the choice of words and the spelling of words used in the teaching materials they developed. They checked and rechecked until they were sure of the correctness of the dictions and the spelling. The last but not least is about the cultural issue in the sentences. It dealt with the appropriateness of the sentences they make due to native speakers‟ cultural background. Therefore, the writer concluded that the use of Hot Potatoes promoted autonomy in students‟ learning.

Abstract

This study investigates language functions used by the caretakers of autistic children in ―Miracle Run‖. The objectives of the study are to find out the kinds and the effectiveness of language functions used by caretakers in the film. This study uses descriptive qualitative approach. It is categorized as discourse analysis because this study analyzes phenomena of talk in interaction. The data are collected from the utterances used by the caretakers; they are mother, doctor, teacher, and therapist when talk to the autistic children and those are analyzed by using M.A.K Halliday theory on language functions.
