Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the concentration of Na2S in the process liming/ scaling the tensile strength and elongation water snake crust leather (Hemalopsis Buccata). Raw material used is 12 sheets of water snake skin (Hemalopsis Buccata). In the scales removing process Na2S was used with concentration level of 0.5 oBe; 0.75 oBe; 1.0 oBe; 1.25 oBe. At the end of the crust leather tanning process, tensile strength and elongation were tested. The test results will be compared with SNI No. 06-4586-1998 of the quality requirements of chrome tanned water snake finished leather. From the tensile strength test result, increased concentrations of Na2S resulted in decreased tensile strength, though it still in accordance with the SNI with requirement at least 1000 N / cm2. From the elongation test results, note that all the elongation above a maximum of 30% requisite by SNI. Nonetheless refers to the suitability of common data quality requirements of various types of finished leather from BASF (2004), the leather still can be processed leather products due to the strong and soft texture. Increasing concentrations of Na2S will increase the pH value at the liming/ scaling and influence the tensile strength.

Abstract

This study aims to obtain the curing kinetics of modified PF resin using sodium metasilicate. Three process steps are involved; polimerization of PF resin, thermal analysis and evaluation. In polimerization, phenol and formaldehyde are reacted with sodium hidroxide or sodium metasilicate as catalyst in batch reactor. Dynamic kinetics are done by calculating the heat flow during curing process using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). The temperature and heatflow data obtained at peak exotherm curve are used for calculating the kinetics. Resin structures are studied using FT-IR and SEM. The calculation result show that the activation energy (Ea) is 105.100 J/mol for PF resin with sodium metasilicate and 118.070 J/mol for PF resin without modifier. Whereas, FTIR analysis shows that there are O-H, aldehyde and C=C aromatics functional groups as the structures of PF Resin. The lower value of activation energy and curing temperature indicates the sodium metasilicate is potential as modifier for PF Resin.

Abstract

One of the animals whose leather is often taken and used in the leather industry is cow. There is cow leather having its original texture and some has been printed with other animal’s texture, meaning not in its original texture. Visually, it is difficult to know whether or not the cow leather printed with other motifs still have features of its original texture. This research aims to analyze the features of original cow leather texture and of that which has been modified. The research is conducted by feature extraction of the leather image using Gray Level Cooccurrence Matrix (GLCM). There are five features calculated including contrast, correlation, energy, entropy, and homogeneity. The experiments proved that the four angles of GLCM show the same thing, i.e. for contrast and entropy, the images of the cow leather that has been modified have higher value than those of original texture. While for the correlation, energy, and homogeneity the images of the cow leather that has been modified have a lower value than those taken from leather with its original texture.
