Abstract

Dental and mouth disease is a disease that can attack all age groups, and has a progressive attitude if not treated or treated which will get worse. Riskesdas (2018) recorded data nationally for the proportion of dental and mouth problems (tooth decay/cavity/pain) of 45.3%, and the highest dental and mouth problems experienced by residents in the age group of 5-9 years which amounted to 67.3 %. This research was conducted with the aim to find out the effectiveness of dental and oral health counseling on respondents’ knowledge by using the lecture method and the group discussion method, namely in September 2019 until May 2020. The research method used is the study of literature by collecting data related to research from literature which is then examined. The data used are secondary data that is data obtained from the results of previous studies or sources of literature and data collection methods used are literature studies, namely by collecting various references about counseling with lecture methods, group discussions and the level of knowledge about oral health. Data analysis method used is the content analysis method or descriptive analysis method which is done by describing the facts obtained and then analyzed. The data obtained is compiled and analyzed so that conclutions can be obtained that can answer the reseach objectives based on the study of literature studies. The results of the literature study show that there are differences in respondents' knowledge after counseling with the lecture method and the group discussion method. The average value of respondents’ knowledge after the counseling intervention with the group discussion method is greater than the lecture method, so it can be concluded that the group discussion method is more effective in increasing respondents' knowledge about oral and dental health than the lecture method. The effectiveness of health education methods is influenced by various factors including responden characteristics such as age, education level, etc. So that it can give different effectiveness results. Key words : lecture, discussion, efffectiveness

Abstract

Saliva is a complex fluid in maintaining healthy teeth and mouth. One of the ingredients based on local wisdom that can be used as a natural cleanser from plaque and debris on teeth is Jicama. Jicama has a very large content of water and fiber, Chewing Jicama can stimulate and increase salivation. This study aims to determine the effect of Jicama on changes saliva in the oral cavity. The type of research used is Quasi-Experimental using pre and post design with non control group design. The population of this study is all level II students of AKG Puskesad. The total sampling was 36 respondents. Data analysis using the Wilcoxon and Kruskal Wallis Tests. The results of the results of the analysis test of this study showed that the average pH value of saliva before and after chewing Jicama decreased with a value of 18.90 to 16.50 (p-value = 0.001), a saliva viscosity value of 18.00 to 0.00 (p-value = 0.001) and a buffer capacity value increased from a value of 12.00 to 12.55 (p-value = 0.001). The correlation test between saliva Ph and saliva viscosity obtained a value of r = 0.526 (p-value = 0.001). The Effect of Jicama on Changes in pH, Viscosity and Saliva buffer capacity.

Abstract

Toothbrush contamination occurs immediately after use and increases when use is repeated. After the toothbrush is used, it should be washed and disinfected. Bay leaf (Eugenia polyantha Wight) can be an alternative herbal disinfectant because it contains tannin, flavonoids and essential oils that are antiseptic and antimicrobial. This study was an experimental laboratory to see the inhibitory content of bay leaf extract concentration of 20%, 30%, 40%, 50% and 60% on the growth of toothbrush bacteria colonies. Samples are bacterial colonies originating from 8 toothbrushes that have been used by 8 students in the mass toothbrush activity in SDN Harapan in the City of Bandung, with inclusion criteria aged 9-12 years and having a DMF-T index> 3. Repeat treatment for each concentration was 4 times. The results showed that bay leaf extract at concentrations of 20%, 30%, 40%, 50% and 60% could inhibit the growth of bacterial colonies, but when compared with the antibacterial effects produced by antibiotics Ciprofloxacin (5 µg), inhibitory content of bay leaf extract the five concentrations are relatively smaller. Colonies of contaminant bacteria that often appear on toothbrushes are Neisseria sp and Streptococcus sp, Klebsiella sp, Enterobacteriaceae sp (Coliform), and Staphylococcus aureus. Further research can be developed to find out other herbal ingredients that can be combined to increase disinfection, good dosage forms and the right contact time between disinfectant and toothbrushes.
