Abstract

This research was aimed to develop supplementary material for the first semester of Tenth grade students of Beauty Study Program at SMK Negeri 5 Pontianak. The procedure of this research was ADDIE, it was conducted through the following steps: analyzing the needs, designing the framework, developing the materials, try out the materials, and evaluating the materials. The needs analysis reveals the students of Beauty Study Program needed a particular materials supporting their knowledge about communicating with costumers at a salon. The supplementary materials provided 4 units. They are Dear costumers, may I have your name?; Congrats for your new position!; I would like to dye my hair; and keep your attention, please. Based on the implementation, the students were more enthusiastic in learning English. All of the students follow the teaching and learning process actively since the first time. Based on the expert validation this product considered as valid to be used by the students, as well as the feedback from the participant prove that this supplementary material appropriate to be used. In conclusion, the English learning materials for the grade X students of Beauty Study Program at SMK Negeri 5 Pontianak has successfully developed and could be used as a supplementary material. First, the researcher suggests that the need analysis sheets should be applied in order to meet specific needs of the learners. Second, the prototype is needed to help the researcher develop the supplementary material based on the criteria. Third, evaluation by expert perception is needed to find out the feasibility of supplementary material and feedback is needed in order to make the developing material be more excellent.

Abstract

This study is about the use of role play to improve students’ speaking ability in the case of the X Culinary 1 Class of SMKN 8 Surabaya. The purpose of this study is to find out whether the use of Role Play to improve the students’ speaking ability.The object of this study was the X Culinary 1 Class of SMKN 8 Surabaya. Total of 36 students from the X Culinary 1 Class of SMKN 8 Surabaya were involved in this study. I used questionnaires to collect the necessary data. The data were in the form of questions, from which the data analysis was done. In conducting the research, I observed the students’ activities in the role play.From the observation, it was found out that with the use of role play students were more encouraged to speak English, they more often spoke in English, were able to give feedback to other speakers, and used their vocabulary more in order to make their speaking alive.The result of the analysis showed that students spoke more bravely and fluently than before while using role play. I suggested some ways to teach speaking using role play; the teacher should recognize the students’ experience to make a more simple activity because if they have ever had such a situation they could do the activity easily. The teacher should guide the students to do role play and how to do it well. The teacher should make the students understand the situation in details to give good performance, and if the treatment has done in a long time, it will get a better result.

Abstract

This research is a classroom action research. It is aimed to describe how Student Teams-Achievement Division (STAD) improves the students’ engagement in reading comprehension activities. The problems found in this research were the ninth grade students of MTs Negeri 4 Sambas were low engaged in reading comprehension activities. This research was conducted in class B. The procedure of the research consisted of planning, enacting, observing, and reflecting. In this study, the researcher was the teacher of the research subject who implemented STAD in teaching reading comprehension. The data were in form of quantitative and qualitative data. The tools of data collection were observation checklist, field note, ad questionnaire. The quantitative data were collected from the observation checklist, and questionnaire. The quantitative data were analyzed by statistic formula. The qualitative data were analyzed by using a method stated by Best and Kahn (2006). From the result of the research, the researcher found that STAD can improve the students’ engagement in reading class. They were enthusiastic to participate in class presentation and discussion. During the learning process, they were active to learn better such as trying to understand the reading texts by asking questions and sharing their knowledge and ideas to other students.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the kinds of English Dictions commonly occured in the students Facebook status. It was the analysis on the use of English of the students of Pamane Talino college of Education and the reasons behind the writing of the dictions by students STKIP Pamane Talino Landak Regency. The method used was a descriptive qualitative research method. The subjects in this study were English students at STKIP Pamane Talino, Landak Regency, for the 2019&2020 year of study, totaling 30 students. Sources of data were: (1) sources (informants), (2) places and events, (3) documents. Data collection techniques used in this study are (1) documents, (2) interviews. The results of this study are: (1) The types of English diction used by the students are as follows: (a) formal diction, (b) informal diction. The college students tend to use informal diction (93.3%) rather than formal diction (6.7%) in writing status on their Facebook. It is because writing informal diction is easy, simple, and free to express their feeling and thinking. Many of them claimed that have limited vocabulary. This research also showed the background of the students’ reason in writing informal diction on their Facebook status is because they want to share their feeling. (2) The reasons of writing English diction by students are (a) The students need to share their experience and situation in their daily life, (b) The students inspired from words of motivation and lyrics of song, (c) The students want to express the current idea that pop in their mind. This is because most of the students tend to write in English to practice their writing skill and vocabulary.Keywords: Facebook, Type of Diction

Abstract

The main problem of this research was the students’ participation and writing ability are still low. The objective of this research is to recognize the improvement in students’ participation and to describe the improvement of students writing ability in learning activities through the implementation of Tree Diagram techniques. The subject of this research is the students of the tenth grade consisting of 30 students, 15 males and 15 females. Data from both qualitative and quantitative sources were used in this Classroom Action Research (CAR) study. While the authors employed tests to gather student test scores for quantitative data, they obtained qualitative data through observation, interviews, field notes, and documentation. The results showed that there was a positive increase in both students’ participation in learning to write and students’ ability to write descriptive texts. This can be seen from the results of observation checklists, field notes, and interviews showing that tree diagrams can increase students’ participation in learning to write. In cycle II the checklist observation results were 89.5%. The students’ writing results were also good, with an average score of 81.51. The researcher concluded that the Tree Diagram Technique was successful in increasing students' participation and ability to write.

Abstract

This study deals with students’ pronunciation errors in English consonants. It was conducted under the consideration that pronouncing English words played an important role. A descriptive qualitative was used as the research method. The subject of this research was forty seven students of first year of English Language Education Study Program at Pamane Talino College of Education, Landak Regency, West Kalimantan. Pronunciation test and interview were used to collect data. The result reveals that the students got difficulties in pronouncing /θ/, /ð/, /ʃ/, /ʒ/, /tʃ/ and /dʒ/. Then, the factors affecting the students’ pronunciation are interference, phonological system and motivation.

Abstract

The trend of online learning has been intensifying and present is the need for study to align this phenomenon to motivation in order for language teachers to boost students’ achievement. This research is about to inquire the correlation between online informal learning of English and motivation to learn English. Quantitative method was used to measure the correlation between variables. Subjects were students in a boarding school selected with random sampling. To obtain data, questionnaire and interview were conducted. There were 55 students in total that participated in completing the questionnaire and only 16 of them were taken to be considered for the interview. The questionnaire was in Likert Scale about the frequency of English use and about the motivation in learning. Semi-structured interview was used to confirm and expand the data. Statistical analysis of two questionnaire resulted in a positive correlation (correlation coefficient {r} = 0,48). This means that higher values of one variable tend to be associated with higher values of other variable. Suggestion was to increase English use in online activities, to observe other factors affecting the results, and more research is needed to be conducted.

Abstract

Based on the novel The Old Man and The Sea by Ernest Hemingway, 1952. The discussion of the problem in this novel is to analyze the main characters, namely Santiago, Manolin and Marlin. The data used to strengthen the facts in this study are library research and are supported by novels and biographies of the author. The method used in this research is a comparative literature study with descriptive qualitative research. The characterizations contained in these characters are as follows: Santiago is a character who has a physical condition, is generous, never gives up, a parent figure for manolin, an unlucky character (salao). Meanwhile, Manolin is a character who has unyielding character, lucky character, compassionate and kind, loyal character. As for the non-human character, he is Marlin, besides he is a friend and brother to Santiago, stubborn, Santiago's pride.

Abstract

This study was aimed to develop learning material for teaching writing recount text using STAD technique to the tenth-grade Students. The researcher developed the learning material because there were conditions in the class which do not support the situation in the learning process, The Learning process in writing skill, some students passive in the class so make the students not motivated and the learning process is not going well, and also the material used in the school is not complete enough. The procedure was based on ADDIE but because of the situation in this era (COVID-19), the research was conducted ADD ( Analyze, Design, and Develop). It was conducted through the following analyzing the needs, designing the framework, and Developing the material. The learning material for teaching writing recount text using STAD technique had been validated by the expert: the learning material is appropriate with some revisions. The researcher suggested that further development of learning material for teaching recount text using STAD, for the next developers who conduct the same product to make it more complete (ADDIE) until the Implementation and Evaluation section in the class to make the learning material better

Abstract

The paper is aimed to find out whether the Three Steps Interview can improve the students’ speaking skill in Tenth Grade of Hospitality SMKN 8 Surabaya. Participants in this study were tenth graders majoring in hospitality. There are 36 students in the class. From that, the number of female students dominates. The data used in this research were students‘ difficulty to the learning process and students‘ speaking score. From this information, the researchers could find that the treatment was successful or not. To collect the data, the researchers used instruments such as test and observation checklist. In the first cycle the students' speaking ability has not increased. This is caused by several things, such as (1) Unclear explanation of the material, (2) in group division, students choose groups independently so that students who are smart and those who are less intelligent cannot be divided equally. (3) The teacher explaining the material is less relaxed. (4) Instructions are not clear. (5) The teacher determining the topic by his-self. In the second cycle students' speaking ability increased from 85% of students got score 50 to 69 and 15% got scores in the range of 70 to 84 increase into 91% students succeeded in achieving the criteria for the value that must be achieved. In conclusion, the Three Steps Interview technique can be used to improve speaking skills.
