Abstract

Working after marriage is a dilemma for most women in Indonesia. This study estimates the probability of a working woman to exit the labor market after marriage. Using the Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS) data from the 2007 and 2014 waves, this study estimates a logit model on the probability of a working woman to exit the labor force. This study found that working in the formal sector is the most significant variable to encourage a working woman to leave the labor force. The policy recommendation of this study is reducing the opportunity costs of working for women in the formal sector

Abstract

This study aims to assess the impact of road and port infrastructure quality of Indonesia and its trade partners, on Indonesia’s export performance in total as well as on three commodity groups, consisting of mineral, base metals, and manufactured products. Using the Gravity Model with panel data from bilateral export value with 18 largest trade partners in 2007 to 2018, this study found that the proxy of transportation infrastructure quality of both countries are significant and positively impact Indonesia’s total export performance. This study also found that better transportation infrastructure quality has stronger impacts on base metals and manufactured products rather than mineral products, considering each characteristics.

Abstract

Inequality occurs in the process of economic development along with di erences in the natural resources and infrastructure owned by each region. Income inequality reduction programs require accurate data collection and have to reach the smallest areas. This study discusses the application of the Elbers, Lanjouw, and Lanjouw (ELL) and Counterfactual methods to obtain estimates of income inequality indicators at the sub-district and village levels in the Kota Yogyakarta and map them in the form of a poverty map. The data used are Population Census 2010, SUSENAS (2010 and 2018), PODES (2011 and 2018), as well as other BPS publications. The results showed that the estimator of income inequality using the ELL method has a smaller RSE value than the direct estimation results. Poverty Map presents a snap-shot of the distribution of the level of inequality in a relatively heterogeneous small area.

Abstract

This study aims to examine how credit lending can improve MSEs performance, its impact on women micro and small entrepreneurs (PPMK) household welfare, and the determinants of their disinterest in subsidised loans. Using a sample of 82 PPMK households in Depok City and Bogor Regency with the Propensity Score Matching (PSM) method, the results showed loans could boost business income. Still, the government’s credit with low-interest rates is not the primary choice due to limited knowledge, an obligation for collateral, and religious issues such as usury. This study also shows government credit assistance can improve the welfare of MSE households.

Abstract

Crowding out analysis emphasizes the extent to which household spending on tobacco affects other baskets of household expenditures. The data used in this study is the National Socio-Economic Survey in 2016. Using the Quadratic Almost Ideal Demand System equation, this study found that tobacco expenditure has a negative and significant effect on almost all types of household expenditures, such as fuel, education, entertainment, clothing, health, and durable goods. Household durable goods expenditure is the most displaced or sacrificed, followed by education expenditure. This finding reveals tobacco consumption has effect on human capital investment and long-run economic growth in West Sumatra.

Abstract

This study was conducted to analyze the effect of international mass media sentiment on macroeconomic indicators in five ASEAN countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, and Brunei Darussalam. The purpose of this study is to develop a macroeconomic forecast model based on the analysis of macroeconomic indices and international sentiment that combines GDELT and World Development Indicators (WDI) data. The research result states that each economic index variable has a correlation with the news sentiment variable. The indicators most correlated with the news sentiment variable were Current Account Balance (CAB) (0.777628), Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) (0.727840), and Inflation (-0.223941). Therefore, economic policymakers (governments of each country) and market participants rely on a variety of models that incorporate soft information that includes subjective measures of attitudes about current and future economic conditions.

Abstract

The environmental aspect is a vital issue because it is closely related to economic activities that drive the rate of economic growth. Environmental aspects in this study are environmental degradation and natural resource rent. Natural resource rent is still considered a curse or a blessing for a country. In addition, in this study, foreign direct investment and life expectancy were also selected to determine their effect on economic growth. This study took a sample of 5 countries in the ASEAN+ 5 region using panel data analysis for the period 1990 to 2018. The results obtained were environmental degradation, natural resource rents and foreign direct investment had a significant positive effect on economic growth. Abstract

Although the phenomenon of natural resource curse is suspected to have occurred at the regional level in Indonesia, no measurement of such a phenomenon has been carried out yet. This research is aimed to provide an index of measuring the degree of natural resource curse at provincial level in Indonesia. Two indices, the natural resource dependence index and regional sustainable development index, were used to formulate index of regional resource curse (RRCI) using geometric mean of conditional weighted product method. The results found that provinces with richer in mining tend to have higher resource curse index compared with those with less extractive resources.

Abstract

This study aims to identify banking vulnerabilities and analyze the factors that influence them. The tool used to identify bank vulnerabilities uses modification crisis and default index (C&D Index) while hypothesis testing uses logit regression. Commercial banks in Indonesia from 2008 to 2018 was taken as sample. As a result, in 2008 and 2013 were the most vulnerable conditions for banks in Indonesia. The reason most banks have been identified as vulnerable is due to decreased profits, increased liabilities in foreign currencies and increased Non Performing Loan (NPL). Logit regression test show that banking fragility is negatively related to capital, liquid assets, and financial assets.
