Abstract

This essay deals with the issue of multiculturality as a social reality and the need to implement a multicultural education to deepen the social knowledge of Indonesia and the Indonesians. The process of globalization has been invading almost all aspect of human life, which force ordinary Indonesians to come to terms with this global movement. The notion of diversity is very strong in Indonesia and eventually considered as an internal power to deal with the diversified society. However, not every Indonesian seems to understand and live this variety as a blessing. Many even consider it as a destructive factor, a lot of social unrests in Indonesia recently were actually caused by this lack of understanding. Therefore, the author suggests that a multicultural education is very crucial and urgently needed. The national constitution and other regulations are highlighted as the legal basis of the proposed education. Meanwhile, the implementation of this kind of education needs cooperation between all social elements in Indonesia.

Abstract

The missionary role of the church, inherited from Jesus Christ, touches every aspect of human life. The mission is not just a matter of spiritual growth, but also deals with all social development. Therefore, the Catholic church in Indonesia considers education as a missionary priority. There are many good Catholic schools around the country that earn good reputation. However, the crisis of identity seems to emerge inside these many institutions. The authors raise the question, whether currently the church is really doing the missionary job, i.e. proclaiming the Good News, through these schools, or simply running schools with Catholic label. A case studi at SMAK Dempo, Malang, is presented as an ilustration of this concern. The goal is to remind the church about the basic idea of running schools as a tool of missionary ministry.

Abstract

Living in one of the main economic centres in Indonesia, the Catholic Church of Surabaya (Surabaya Diocese) has to face all sorts of secularization. This situation has forced the diocese to redefine its role in this secularized society. The authors highlight four main concerns as the background of the discussion, i.e. (1) the globalized urban culture, (2) the role as economic centre for East Indonesia, (3) the religious diversity and (4) the crisis of identity of Catholic education. This situation leads to a major step of renewing the diocese mission strategy. While acknowledging the main stream of the mission the global church as a basis, the authors suggest two things. The first is to renew internal resources and to strengthen the internal communion. The second is to open up the church to the society by being involved in social struggle, such as promoting dialogue between religions, promoting process of inculturation, advocating the poor and the marginalized people and actively participating in social communication.

Abstract

Penulis mengangkat tema evangelisasi di Papua Barat dengan bingkai pemaparan sejarah. Kekristenan di Papua Barat memiliki sejarah yang panjang dan berliku-liku. Situasi sosial politik turut mempengaruhi. Sebagai bagian koloni Belanda, keadaan dipengaruhi oleh situasi sosial politik Belanda yang ketika itu didominiasi kalangan Protestan Calvin. Tidaklah mengherankan, ketika daerah itu kemudian dibagi menjadi beberapa bagian, masing-masing menjadi hak dan tanggung jawab gereja tertentu, baik Protestan maupun Katolik. Misi-misi Kristen berkembang maju sejalan dengan pembangunan ekonomi, baik oleh pemerintah Belanda, pemerintah pendudukan Jepang maupun kemudian oleh pemerintah Indonesia. Sejalan dengan terbukanya wilayah pegunungan yang dihuni suku- suku asli sekitar tahun 1950-1960-an, misi-misi ini menyentuh hampir seluruh bagian wilayah tersebut. Situasi berubah banyak, ketika Papua Barat menjadi wilayah Indonesia pada tahun 1963. Pemerintah Indonesia mengakui lima agama, yakni Islam, Protestan, Katolik, Hindu dan Budha. Komposisi masyarakat pun berubah sejalan dengan masuknya transmigran yang beragama Islam. Tantangan bagi Gereja semakin bertambah ketika terjadi penindasan masyarakat lokal karena alasan ekonomi. Gereja Katolik dan para imamnya sering berada dalam posisi terjepit.

Abstract

Does Islam need a reformation? Does Islam need to go through a period of enlightenment? These questions are two common questions in the modern studies of Islam and Muslim societies, particularly in the contemporary Western academic world. Interestingly, the history of Christianity is often cited as a point of reference or a point of departure in the discussions of such questions. Christian or Western framework is therefore unavoidably used to frame the history and progress in Islam. What has often been neglected is the fact that Muslim societies in fact have gone through their own particular cycle of reformation or renewal. Drawing upon the observation of Ibnu Khaldun (1332-1406), a notable Arabic historian, on the renewal cycle within Muslim societies six hundred years ago, this article discusses in a simple way the idea of reformation in Islam.

Abstract

Konsep pendidikan multikultural sebagai dimensi praktis dari multikulturalisme berakar dari konsep relativisme budaya. Tujuan utamanya adalah menyiapkan siswa dan guru agar melek budaya sehingga mampu berfungsi secara efektif dalam budaya yang beraneka ragam. Perspektif multikultural menekankan enam level nilai: toleransi, penerimaan, penghormatan, afirmasi, solidaritas, dan kritik. Sementara itu, banyak sekolah hingga saat ini hanya sampai pada tingkat "penghormatan" pada budaya lain. Beberapa penelitian terkait menunjukkan bahwa bahan ajar siswa masih mengandung bias etnis, agama, dan jender, sehingga tidak mencerminkan keragaman budaya siswa serta tidak mendukung perubahan sosial yang lebih menghormati keanekaragaman budaya. Keanekaragaman budaya hanya menampil pada "multikulturalisme turis", pengetahuan tentang nama, tempat, peristiwa dan pernak-pernik budaya. Dalam bahan ajar, tampak bahwa bias budaya meliputi: (1) tidak ditampakkannya budaya (2) stereotipi (3) selektivitas dan ketidakseimbangan (3) tidak sesuai kenyataan (5) fragmentasi dan isolasi, dan (6) bahasa yang muncul dalam berbagai bahan ajar di sekolah. Pendidikan multikultural juga berdampak pada sikap guru: peduli dalam membantu siswa yang berbeda latar belakang budaya untuk mengembangkan pemahaman diri dan konsep diri yang baik, peka dan memahami orang dengan berbagai budaya yang berbeda. Setiap mata pelajaran yang diberikan untuk merefleksikan realitas akan keberbedaan budaya di dalam negeri maupun dalam dunia internasional.
