Abstract

The mind is the most unique thing that differentiates a human being from an animal and it is through the mind as such humans improve their life quality. This is why modernizing religion and culture is indeed seen as a project of developing rationality which is one of six value groups in human beings’ lives. Rationality, in turn, gives birth to science, science technology, and finally, technology is used to develop humans’ economy and to support any advancement in various dimensions of human beings’ lives. For Islam, rationality is not something new because Islam is a rational religion. Rationality is, therefore, unique to Islam and it is not in contrast with Islam. In that sense, modernity as a major fruit of rationality is not against Islam. Learning from the West, that is, its science and technology, therefore, is necessary for Indonesia to be a modern nation, particularly in such fields as religion and culture.

The arrival of immigrants from various countries and continents to America has become part of a very long history for this country. In fact, the United States was founded by group of immigrants. History accounts the arrival of Muslim immigrants in America in several waves; nonetheless, Islam and Muslims remained foreign for American people. They endure prejudices, discrimination, verbal abuse, and hate crimes due to the increasing Islamophobia among American society. The study highlights a group of young Muslims known as Mipsterz (Muslim Hipsters) and examines how Mipsterz becomes a site for negotiating identity as a Muslim American. Started as a small group of Muslim youngsters from New York City in 2012, Mipsterz develops into a space for minorities to speak up and define themselves through their creative works. Unluckily, along with the growing number of white supremacists, Islamophobia and negative stereotypes are keep growing and felt by Muslim Americans, even among American-born Muslim generations. Mipsterz aims to keep producing stories and marginalized voices to the fore front of American public, as its members do not want to be identified either Muslims or Americans; they are Muslim Americans.

Abstract

This study aims to see how religious discourse in the presidential election is represented in social media. The study concludes as follows: First: Presidential Election 2109 represents three discourses namely: Discourse on Religion and Candidacy of Candidates, Discourse on Politics and Badar War and Discourse on Ulama and Power. Second: Factors that influence representation are: political factors, religious interpretations and digital culture. On political factors, it appears that religion is politicized in the 2019 Presidential Election because religion alone provides political benefits. So for political purposes the power of religious politicization in the 2019 Presidential Election becomes a necessity. Meanwhile, on the factor of religious interpretation, it was concluded that religious interpretation influenced the representation of the 2019 Presidential Election discourse. Religious interpretation was used as a legitimate tool to support or reject certain candidates. Likewise with the digital world, the representation of religious discourse can be so massive, precisely because it is influenced by digital culture that has touched all aspects of human life, including religion. Through the digital world of marketing and the 2019 Presidential Election campaign can be faster, cheaper and more effective even though it has raised concerns over the future and integration of the Unitary Republic of Indonesia. The open nature of the digital world makes open conflict so that it has the potential to trigger national divisions.

Abstract

The current concept and implementation of education in Islam so far has not shown excellence in solving community problems in an applicative-operational manner. This is because Muslims are often trapped in dichotomous thinking distinguishing Islamic knowledge from non-Islamic knowledge. Islamic education is only considered as related to “hereafter world” which only regulates theoretical relationships. The worldly problems are considered not too important, which ultimately makes Islamic education stresses more on religious sciences. This in turn creates a very wide gap because education in Islam is focused on revelation. As a result, Islamic education has not been able to get involved in the contemporary social and humanist realm. Against this backdrop, it seems that there is a pressing need to reexamine the concept of education in Islam to make it more empowering, critical, and creative. The book entitled “Rereading the Concept of Education in Islam” written by Dr. Hujair AH Sanaky, MSi is one of the attempts to re-examine the concept of education in Islam by dismantling the dichotomy between Islamic education and education and offering a design of education in Islam that is more integrative and responsive to the demands of changing societies and times.
