Abstract

Education especially at the university level has experienced a shift from online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic to the post-pandemic era with blended learning. Blended learning combines learning using online learning methods combined with face-to-face learning. Students' experience of online learning during the pandemic sparked their hopes or expectations for the next learning they will do. Therefore, the role of teachers and educational institutions is important to know the needs of students to improve learning methods in the post-pandemic era by knowing students’ hopes or expectations. This study aimed to explore the students’ expectations for blended learning in the post-pandemic era. It employed a qualitative method by interviews and collected data from 10 7th-semester EFL university students in the year 2022/2023 in the public university in Bali. The interview guidelines were validated through face validity and content validity. The result revealed that the students preferred blended learning to be more interactive with lecturers and more access to resources, and technology to be used where necessary. The study provides valuable insights for the lecturers to enhance the teaching experience in future blended learning.

Abstract

Reading comprehension is a vital skill that students need to develop. However, the reality reveals that students still face difficulties in Reading Comprehension Tests. This study aims to identify the difficulties students encounter in Reading Comprehension tests and the underlying factors contributing to these difficulties. It adopts a qualitative approach and focuses on the 26 tenth graders of MA Ma’arif Miftahul Ulum Melirang as the subjects. To accomplish this, ten types of reading comprehension tests were administered to identify the students’ difficulties in reading comprehension tests. Then, students were provided with questionnaires to elicit their opinions on factors influencing their difficulties in reading comprehension tests. The results revealed that students struggle the most with the Free-Recall test. The Summary test came next as the second most challenging, followed by the gap-filling test, Ordering Tasks, and Editing Test. Additionally, the main scores achieved by students in these five tests fell below the 60-point mark with many students obtaining the lowest scores in them. Therefore, English teachers need to provide effective reading comprehension techniques, focusing on strategies to help students overcome challenges in understanding English texts.

Abstract

As one of the language skills, students tend to have difficulties in reading as one of the language skills, especially difficulties in comprehending the text. Because of that, this research aims to investigate undergraduate students' strategies in reading comprehension, which focus on global reading strategy (GLOB), problem-solving strategy (PROB), and support reading strategy (SUP) adapted from Mokhtari & Sheorey (2002). This research was conducted using qualitative research with a case study design. A close-ended questionnaire and semi-structured interview were used as the instruments of this research to gain information about students' reading strategies in reading comprehension, especially in academic reading subjects. Twenty students from the fourth semester of one University in Indramayu participated in this research. The finding shows that the students use PROB with 80,62%, followed by GLOB at 77,38%, and SUP at 73,11%. Students stated in the interview that PROB was helpful and made them focus on understanding information from difficult text. In GLOB, the students usually guess the text content and check whether their guessing related to the text is correct or incorrect. While in SUP, the students circled the text and went back and forth to find the relationship among ideas in the text. Eventually, the findings can be useful for those who wish to conduct a study on students' reading strategies. The further researcher can provide tests to determine the student's ability in reading comprehension to obtain the complete data.

Abstract

Learning poetry is not easy, especially when it comes to understanding poetry. In understanding a poem, students usually do translating activities to help them obtain information and the main message. This study aims to discover the students' experience and difficulties in poetry translation in the poetry classroom. The participants of this study were The Wiralodra University students who took Poetry Classes. The researcher used the qualitative method to analyze the data in this study. The results showed the students experience difficulty in poetry translation. The students' responses find poetry translation difficult and never do it apart in a poetry class. Some problems that students face in poetry translation such as: finding equivalent words, translating culture, maintaining poetic structure, understanding metaphorical expressions, and maintaining melodic elements. Then, holding the melody element dominated the student's difficulty in poetry translation, followed by maintaining poetic structure and understanding metaphorical experience. As the solution that they preferred predominated, they ignored the problems and continued to overcome their challenges in translating poetry with ease. The suggestion for further research is to explore the reasons for their preferred solution to overcome the problem in poetry translation.

Abstract

Morphology is a field of science that investigates and studies basic forms in language, such as morphemes, the formation of affixes, words, and others. The purpose of this research is to find and identify the types of word formation in posts and comments on Mark Zuckerberg's Instagram account. This paper used theories from Yule (2020) to analyze the word-formation process. This study used the qualitative method to explain the data using sentences. In collecting data, this research used the observation method and note-taking techniques. The results of this study found 235 raw data points classified into types of word-formation processes. This research analyzed five types of word formation: acronym, derivation, compounding, coinage, and clipping. The types found along with the frequency of appearance are: acronym was found 24 times, derivation appeared 129 times, compounding 30 times, coinage 42 times, and clipping 10 times. The explanation provided above indicates that the most popular way for people to form new words and increase their vocabulary is by derivation, a sort of word construction that is extensively employed. Furthermore, the least common type is clipping in the data source of this study. The reason for this is that certain Instagram users who leave comments on Zuckerberg's posts rarely condense lengthy phrases into shorter ones.

There are 1.167 raw data items. However, the researchers analyzed eighteen data based on the types of deixis.  The use of person deixis contained six data, four data contained time deixis, two data contained discourse, and two data contained social deixis for the result of this research. Person deixis is dominant than the other types. Meanwhile, social deixis appeared less frequently because the context is not widely used in that context. This suggests a significant focus on individual references, highlighting the crucial role of personal connections in shaping the podcast’s discourse.

Abstract

This study's objective is to determine the types of lexical cohesion employed in "Will Smith's Full Interview with Ellen" based on Haliday & Hasan (1976) lexical cohesion theory. This study employs a qualitative methodology that focuses on repetition, synonym, antonym, meronym, and hyponym types of lexical cohesion. Data were gathered by the researcher through observation and note-taking methods. The "Will Smith's Full Interview with Ellen" contains all the lexical cohesion types that were the subject of this investigation. The researcher discovered nine repetitions, three synonyms, two antonyms, and one hyponym. It follows that Repetition exhibits the highest level of lexical cohesion throughout "Will Smith's Full Interview with Ellen".” The speaker tends to repeat words, phrases, or sentences, which the researcher discovered from the data that has been evaluated.  The conclusion from the concept of lexical cohesion is that the use of lexically or semantically related words in a text has a positive impact on the connectedness, fluency, and clarity of communication. Lexical cohesion helps build strong connections between parts of the text, ensures a consistent flow of thought, and improves reader comprehension.

Abstract

Finding cohesion and the kinds of lexical cohesion used by Indonesian students in the United States speech on YouTube social media is the goal of this study. The enunciation expressed by student speech produces sentences that contain lexical types by connecting sentence by sentence into one discourse, thus becoming a source of data in this research. After that the data found is analyzed by identification based on the kinds of lexical cohesion obtained from the data source using the theory by Halliday & Hasan, (1976) and also Platridge Brian, (2012) theory. This research discovered using descriptive qualitative methods. To collect the data was carried out using the observation technique. The study findings include a few expressions that combine to create sentences with the various lexical cohesion patterns observed in speech Indonesian students in the United States: 8 data repetition, 1 data synonymy, 4 data meronym, and 2 data collocation. Lexical cohesion is widely used by Indonesian students in the United States in speeches. Lexical cohesion functions to create coherence between the meanings of sentences by selecting vocabulary or lexemes. Lexical cohesion also functions to connect elements in discourse semantically.
