The aims of this journal is to provide a venue for researchers, academicians and practitioners for publishing the original articles or review articles. The main focus of the journal is on language teaching and pedagogy work. We are particularly interested on Language and Teaching Methodologies, Pedagogical Techniques, Technology in Language Teaching, Technology in Language Teaching such as CALL and MALL and Curriculum Development and Material design. Although the focus is primarily on research on language education, we will also consider papers in other areas of applied linguistics such as Sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and neurolinguistics, Language and culture, cognition, and pragmatics and Theories and practice in related fields.

Abstract

The objective of the research was to find out : (1) whether or not phonetic symbols influence pronunciation ability of the second-semester students of Muhammadiyah University of Sidenreng Rappang and (2) whether or not the students interested in the use of phonetic symbols in teaching and learning pronunciation of the second-semester students of Muhammadiyah University of Sidenreng Rappang. This research applied a Pre-experimental method that applied one group pre-test and post-test. The subject of the research was the second-semester students of Muhammadiyah University of Sidenreng Rappang in the academic year 2018/2019. The total population was 30 students that gather in one class and the population was taken as samples by the total sampling technique. The data of the research were collected by using two kinds of instruments, namely pronunciation test, and questionnaire. The pronunciation test was used to obtain data on the students’ pronunciation ability and the questionnaire was used to know the students’ interest in teaching and learning pronunciation through phonetic symbols.

Abstract

Writing is considered a difficult skill for students. Regarding the reality, the Indonesian government has put one approach in curricula namely genre-based approach that makes the researcher interested to formulates two research objectives in this research. They are to find out the extent to which the using genre-based approach helps teachers in teaching writing hortatory exposition texts and to know the students’ interest in the implementation of the genre-based approach in learning writing hortatory exposition texts at SMA Negeri 2 Pinrang. The researcher applied the triangulation mix method and used purposive sampling. To obtain the data, the researcher used three instruments, namely observation, interview, and questionnaire. After analyzing the data, the research result indicated a genre-based approach helpful to teachers in teaching writing hortatory texts. Further, the students’ interests categorize as strongly interest. Keywords: Genre-based Approach, Writing, Hortatory Exposition Texts.

Abstract

Interviewing technique was attractived technique to implement on English learning process specially in speaking field of the students that still low, caused of teachers teachnique that made students less of self-confidence and doesn’t actively in learning process. It was proved based on the students achievment in researchers observatioan data which was showed that their speaking ability was still low. Therefore, the objective of this research was to find out whether or not the implementation of interviewing technique can increase students speaking ability at the tenth grade students of SMAN 4Parepare in online class by using whatsapp group as a teaching media. The researcher applied pre-experimental class design with one group pretest and posttest design. The population of this research was tenth grade students of SMAN 4 Parepare academic year 2020/2021. The sample of this research was taken by using purposive sampling which was class X MIPA 3 that consisted of 20 students as a samples. The result of data analysis showed that the students speaking ability was increased. It was proved by the mean score in pretest was 56,3 while the mean score in posttest was 80,95. So, the score of t-test 2,217 was greater than t-table th degree of freedom (df = n − 1) 19 for 0,05 level of significance. It can be said that the implementing of interviewing technique increased the students speaking ability at the tenth grade students of SMAN 4 Parepare.

Abstract

Vocabulary is one of the important mastery in English. People can communicate or talk with others by creating a sentence either verbally or in writing. The function of a sentence is to convey the message or the specific intent. So that the message can be up and understandable manner of speaking. This research was based on the students problem regarding the English teaching. Especially the students vocabulary mastery. It was caused by the teaching activity applied in the classroom, where the teacher was more active than students. Consequently, the students vocabulary mastery was low. Therefore, the objective of the research is to find out whether or not the use of the cartoons films able to improve vocabulary mastery of seventh grade junior high schools in UPTD SMPN 1 Parepare. The researcher applied quasi-experimental design with two groups pretest and posttest design. The population of this research was the seventh grade students at UPTD SMPN 1 Parepare academic year 2020/2021. The sample of the research was taken by using total random sampling which consisted of 64 students from two classes taken from the population of the seventh grade students of UPTD SMPN 1 Parepare. VII.6 as the experimental class and VII.9 as the control class.The result of the data analysis shown that the students vocabulary mastery was improved. It was shown by the mean score of the pretest in the experimental class was 50.00 while the control class 55.43. Besides that, the mean score of posttest on experimental was 83.12 while on control class 64.68. It was proved the t-test 2.380 was greater than the t-table 2.000 with degree of freedom (df)=(N1+N2-2) 62 for 0.05 level of significance. It can be concluded that the results of the scores indicate that cartoon films are quite effective in implementing UPTD SMPN 1 Parepare

Abstract

The learning program in schools has not been implemented for a long time. This was done to minimize physical contact or interaction between the teachers and students, to break the chain of transmission of Covid-19. Further, to fill teaching and learning activities that should be completed, the government adopted a policy through distance learning with online media. As for one of online media that is being used in learning, especially at SMKN 1 Parepare, that is by using the Google Classroom application. Therefore, this study was conducted to obtained students’ perspective on E-Learning through Google Classroom for teaching English. The researcher used qualitative design with case study method and used purposive sampling. To obtain the data, the researcher used three instruments, namely observation, interview, and documentation. After analyzing the data, the research result indicated students' perspectives on using Google Classroom for teaching English were not optimal during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Abstract

This research was conducted to determine the perception of students and teachers learning and teaching English from home related to their perceptions about their problems and their perceptions on learning and teaching English from home. This study used a descriptive qualitative design. The populations of this study were students and teachers of SMK Negeri 2 Parepare. Participants consisted of seven student respondents and seven teacher respondents. In addition, data was collected through observation and interviews. The results showed that students perceptions reveal that learning English from home using learning media used by teachers such as Google Classroom and WhatsApp Group makes it difficult for students to understand the material provided, this is because there is no explanation, no face to face and the questions given are not included with the material. The teacher's perception reveals that the learning media used makes it easier for students to see the questions.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Alfandi, The Use of Think-Pair-Share Technique to Improve Reading Comprehension of the Seventh Grade Students of SMP Negeri 10 Parepare. Supervised by Ammang Lathifa and Badaruddin. Reading skill is increasingly seen as one of the most important skills because mastering reading skill, the student will be easier to understand the meaning of the text. The skill of reading a variety of texts will enable learners to adjust the speed and style of their reading to suit the purpose and extract both implicit and explicit meaning from the text. Therefore, reading skill is still one of the most important aspects to be taught in school in order to enable the learners to grasp the meaning from the reading text. Reading without comprehension or understanding is not reading, many students can pronounce words fluently but when asked what they have just read, they are unable to respond. This research was based on the students problem regarding the English teaching, especially the students reading comprehension. It was caused by the teaching activity applied in the classroom, where the teacher was more active than the students. Consequently, the students reading was low. Therefore, the objective of the research to find out whether or not the use of Think-Pair-Share technique improves the seventh students of SMP Negeri 10 Parepare. The researcher applied quasi-experimental design, with two groups pretest and posttest design. The population of this research was the seventh grade students at SMP Negeri 10 Parepare academic year 2018/2019. The sample of research was taken by using total random sampling which consisted of 64 students from two classes taken from the population of the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 10 Parepare, VII.1 as the experimental class and VII.3 as the control class. The result of the data analysis showed that the students reading comprehension was improved, it was showed by the mean score of pretest in experimental class was 52,58 while the contol class 46,66. Besides that the mean score of posttest on experimental 72,58 while on control class 63,33. It proved the t-test 2.166 is grater than t-table 2.000 with degree of freedom (df) = (N1+N2-2) 62 for 0.05 level of significance. It showed that the reading comprehension of the seventh grade students at SMP Negeri 10 Parepare improved by using Think-Pair-Share technique. Abstract

Teaching ESP on today students needs the application of technology. Hence, this study discusses about integrating technology in teaching English for Islamic study at University of Muhammadiyah Parepare by Using Telegram Application. The objective of this study is to measure whether the use of telegram application in integrating technology in ESP class has a significant difference on students’ achievement and to investigate the students’ perception about the use of telegram application in integrating technology in teaching English for Islamic study at University of Muhammadiyah Parepare. This study used mixed method which combine the quantitative and qualitative data. Based on the result of quantitative data analysis, it is indicated that the use of telegram application in integrating technology in teaching English for Islamic study not produce significant difference on students’achievement. It is proved by the result of comparing t-test value and t-table value. The t-test value (1.455) is not higher than t-table value (2.262). However, the result of qualitative data analysis shows that the use of telegram application in teaching English for Islamic study produce positive perception of students. It means that the use of telegram has the possitive effect in integrating technology in teaching English for Islamic study.
