Abstract

This research-based on the students’ problem regarding English teaching especially speaking. It was caused by the teaching media applied in the classroom, where the students not interested to study. This problem was also caused by several factors such as the students in the classroom were bored and not motivated in teaching taught by using media. Consequently, the students’ speaking ability was low. Therefore, the objectives of the research are To find out whether or not the use of YouTube-based video via Zoom able to make students interesting to start speaking at eighth-grade students of UPTD SMP Negeri 7 Parepare. And how it can give progress to students speaking ability. The researcher applied a pre-experimental design (quantitative descriptive one tail), with two groups of pretest and posttest design. The researcher carries out the material by using YouTube-based video Via Zoom. The population of this research was the eighth-grade students at UPTD SMP Negeri 7 Parepare academic year 2020/2021. The sample of the research was taken by using cluster random sampling which consisted of 22 students from one class taken from the population of the eighth-grade student of UPTD SMP Negeri 7 Parepare, VIII.1. The result of the data analysis showed that the students speaking ability were improved, showed by the mean score of the pretest was (53,77). Besides that the mean score of the posttest was (72,54). It showed that the speaking ability of the eighth-grade students at UPTD SMP Negeri 7 Parepare was got progress by implementing YouTube-based video.

Abstract

This study aims to show the students achievement after treated by using smartphone. Based on researcher result observation data through reading comprehension test, the students achievement was place in low classification before giving treatment. It caused of teachers that made students lack of attractive and interest in English learning process. So, the researcher tried to improve students reading comprehension achievement by using smartphone at the eighth grade students of UPTD SMPN 2 Balusu English lesson in online class. The researcher applied pre-experimental with one group pretest and posttest design. The researcher applied these in the eighth grade students with population was 53 students academic year 2020/2021. While, the researcher using purposive sampling technique to determined the sample then, researcher got class VIII/B as a sample which was consisted of 20 students. The result of data analysis presented that the students achievement was improved by used smartphone in learning english process. It was shown of the different between students mean scores in pretest(55,5) and posttest(79,25) while the different scores was 23,75. So, the directed hypothesis was accepted that the students English achievement got much better after they studying English by using smartphone. So, the researcher concluded, smartphone was one of best can improved the students achievement in English learning process at the eighth grade students of UPTD SMPN 2 Balusu.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the benefits provided for the ownership of English test certificate (TKBI) for job seekers and employees in a job. The need for English test that is used at the level of education as a condition to complete the study is now starting to penetrate into recruitment requirements in the world of work. Therefore, the policy of English test becomes a condition of recruitment of workers in various agencies is currently the main topic. This study uses a qualitative case study research method with the design of participants from job seekers and employees as research objects. The object studied consisted of 5 people consisting of 2 job seekers and 3 employees from different agencies and for data collection sourced from observations, interviews, and documentation. The results of the study showed that the participants supported the many benefits obtained from the ownership of English test certificates, especially to support their careers in the world of work. But on the other hand, this study also found the conclusion that the policy to make the English test a condition of recruitment in various agencies is still not appropriate to apply and the application of the test must adjust to the needs of the relevant agencies.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic situation made the Government announce the learning activities into on-line learning. This research focused on the teachers’ strategies used in increasing students’ motivation in english on-line learning classes. This study aimed at answering the following research questions: (1) what are the teachers’ strategies in increasing students’ motivation in english on-line learning at UPT SMK Negeri 1 Parepare? (2) To what extent do the strategies help the teachers in English on-line classes? This type of research was field research with qualitative approach. The results showed that (1) There were several strategies used by English teachers in increasing student motivation in learning English online. The strategies include: using news text, using dialogue text, doing personal approach, giving students the praise/reward, and make a video. (2) Strategies in teaching through on-line learning classes during the COVID-19 pandemic greatly assisted teachers in the increasing motivation students in teaching and learning process to achieve learning goals.

Abstract

This study aim to train students' vocabulary abilities using scrabble. Based on the data from the observations of the researcher through the student's vocabulary knowledge test, the students' ability was still classified as low before got treatment. This is caused by the teacher's media which makes students less interested in the English learning process. So the researchers tried to improve students' vocabulary skills by using the Scrabble game in seventh grade students at SMPN 3 Parepare. The researcher used a quasi-experimental design. The population was 60 students consisting of 30 students each class at SMPN 3 Parepare. Class VII.5 as the experimental class and class VII.4 as the control class. Researcher using random sampling in took sampling in this research. Then the researchers used the pre-test and post-test for data collection. The results of the data analysis showed that the students' vocabulary knowledge skills increased in the learning process using the Scrabble game. This is indicated by the difference between the students' mean score in the experimental class in the pre-test (54.08) post-test (77.78) and the control class in the pre-test (47.31) post-test (62.3) while the value difference distance is 23.7 for the experimental class and 14.99 for the control class. So, this means that the vocabulary skills of seventh grade students at SMPN 3 Parepare have a significant increase. In conclusion, the use of scrabble in training the vocabulary skills of students at SMPN 3 Parepare for the 2020/2021 school year.

Abstract

This research was conducted to see the possibility of using artificial intelligence in the process of learning English in the English Language Study Program at the Universitas Muhammadiyah Parepare. Especially their understanding and perspective of lecturers and students on the use of artificial intelligence in the process of learning English. This study uses Descriptive Qualitative by design taking two groups of subjects namely, subject from students and lecturers. The population of this study is the Department of English Language Education, Universitas Muhammadiyah Parepare. The subject of this study consisting of 14 subjects. the 14 subjects taken from the total subject in which 10 subjects from students and 4 subjects from lecturers. The results of the study indicate that the tendency of students still lacks understanding of what Artificial Intelligence is and for the use and effects of its use students understand that it is very useful and helps them and lecturers. From their perceptions related to the use of artificial intelligence in English language learning, students do not agree on full use in the learning process. As for the lecturers' subject, all said it was very possible, but in order to fully spread it, it still could not.

Abstract

This research based on the problem regard English especially vocabulary mastery of the students. Students are most likely could not say something because they are lack of vocabulary and then students put in their mindset if English is one of the most difficult subject in this case. Applying quantum teaching model in module to improve the vocabulary mastery is suggested to solve the problem. The objectives of the research is to find out and analyze whether or not the Applying of quantum teaching model in module improve or not the students vocabulary mastery of the tenth grade students of SMK Negeri 3 SIDRAP. The researcher applied quasi-experimental design. The sample of the research was 38 students from two classes which taken from the population of the tenth grade students of SMK Negeri 3 SIDRAP. The researcher gave treatment based on the material that already formulated into some module and the test of the research was vocabulary test. The resulting of the data analysis shows that t-test value in post-test was 2.081 and the t-table value 2.028. Therefore, the students who taught trough Quantum Teaching Model in Module were better than the students who taught Contextual Learning Model.

Abstract

This research based on the students’ problem related to English teaching especially in students’ writing ability. It was caused by the teaching media of the teacher in classroom was not interesting for students. It was also caused by several factors such as the students still take a lot of time to write because they do not know what they will written on their paper. In addition, writing is difficult lesson because in writing, we not only share our ideas from our mind but also we have to choose and combine the vocabulary well to make a writing that is meaningful. And one of the writing texts that have to be learnt in SMP is narrative text. Therefore, the objective of the research was to find out whether there is an improvement students’ narrative writing ability after being taught through animation film. This research applied quasi-experimental design with two groups namely experimental and control class. The population of this research was the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Pinrang academic year 2017/2018. The sample of this research consisted of 28 students from two classes taken from the population of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Pinrang by using purposive sampling technique. The result of the data analysis showed that the students’ narrative writing ability improved. It showed by mean score of pre-test was 41.00 and post-test was 72.21. it showed that the writing ability of the eighth grade student of SMP Negeri 5 Pinrang improved by using animation film. After analyzing the data by using SPSS version 20, the result of probability value in post-test was 0.00 and significance value was 0.05. It means that that the probability value (0.00) was lower than significance value (0.05). Those indicated that H 0 was rejected and H1 was accepted. It means that the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Pinrang for experimental class was significantly different. In conclusion, teaching writing by using animation film was effective to improve the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Pinrang of academic year 2017/2018.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out whether or not the use of diary writing strategy was able to improve the Writing ability at The Tenth Year Students of SMK Negeri 2 Parepare. This research used a quasi-experimental method with two classes as sample. The researcher taught the students by Using Diary Writing Strategy. The population of this research was the tenth year students at SMK Negeri 2 Parepare in academic year 2017/2018. The sample of the research consisted of 26 students from two classes taken from the population by using cluster random sampling. The results of data analysis showed that students' writing ability improved. It was shown by the mean score of pre-test that is 50.27 and post-test 75.73. It showed that the writing ability at the tenth year students of SMK Negeri 2 Parepare improved by using diary writing strategy. After analyzing the data by using SPSS version 21, the result of the probability value on the post-test was 0.002 and the significance value was 0.05. The data indicated that H0was rejected and H1 was accepted. It means that the writing ability at the tenth year students of SMK Negeri 2 Parepare before and after treatment was significantly different. In conclusion, teaching writing by using diary writing strategy was effective to improve the writing ability of eleventh grade students of SMK Negeri 2 Parepare in academic year 2017/2018.

Abstract

Reading comprehension is one of English aspect that is not easy to be learned. When doing observation at SMP Negeri 12 Parepare, the researcher found that the students’ reading comprehension was low. It was caused by the unsatisfied of the teacher’s technique in teaching learning process. The researcher has suggested a technique namely guessing game to solve the problems. Then, the objective of this research is to find out whether or not the use of guessing game able to improve the students' reading comprehension. The researcher applied quasi-experimental method, with two group pre- test and post- test design. The samples in this research consisted of 40 students from two classes. The first is experimental class handled through guessing game and the second is control class handled through think pair share. It is taken from the population of the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 12 Parepare. The researcher used cluster random sampling technique. The result of the data analysis shows that the students’ reading comprehension improved significantly. It was showed that the mean score of pre-test was 46.66 and post-test was 72.33. It proves that the use of contextual guessing technique can improve the reading comprehension of the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 12 Parepare. After analyzing the data by using SPSS ver. 21.0, the result of t-test value was 2.394. In this case, t-test value was (2394) was higher than t-teble value (2040). It means that H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted.
