Abstract

This study highlights the ideal ratio between the number of lecturers and students in Islamic Education classes at the Faculty of Economics, Udayana University, Bali. With only one lecturer teaching 200 students, this imbalance is a significant concern, especially amidst worries about the spread of extremism and exclusivism on campus. The research aims to evaluate the learning process, religious moderation attitudes among lecturers and students, and factors influencing religious moderation attitudes among students. Using a qualitative descriptive method and a case study design, data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and questionnaires, and analyzed using descriptive analysis techniques. The findings indicate that the ratio of Islamic Education lecturers to students does not meet government standards, despite the implementation of various teaching methods. Nevertheless, attitudes towards religious moderation are generally positive, although there are indications of a lack of moderation among some students. Internal and external factors were identified as influencing factors on religious moderation attitudes. These findings emphasize the need for ongoing efforts to improve the quality of Islamic Education learning through enhancing lecturer competencies and implementing programs to strengthen religious moderation in higher education, aiming to promote tolerance and reinforce religious moderation among students.

Abstract

This research aims to achieve two objectives: First, to describe the types of cultural artifacts found in an adiwiyata school named MI Perwanida in Blitar, East Java. Second, to analyse the subjective interpretations of these cultural artifacts within the school context. Employing a qualitative design with a phenomenological approach, this study investigates the meaning attributed to adiwiyata artifacts in MI Perwanida. The research encompasses various artifacts within the school and the participants’ view about it, including the school principals, vice principals, teachers, students, school associations and other stakeholders. Data collection methods involve in-depth interviews, observations and documentation. Data validity is ensured through triangulation. The analysis was conducted through phases of: data presentation, data reduction and conclusion drawing. This study's findings indicate that artifacts, including written and physical objects such as photos, posters, classroom interiors, plants, bio pores, waste bins, and waste management tools, are based on religious and social values. These artifacts are construed as evocative forces, encouraging independent adoption of cleanliness habits at home and school, as well as beautification efforts. Additionally, they are seen as suggestive forces, motivating students to adopt clean behaviours, cultivate a liking for and care for plants, and develop environmental awareness. The formation of this culture reinforces Homans' theory that program realization can be analysed through activities, interactions, and emotions. The implications of this study suggest that student character formation can be intensively and consistently conducted through the implementation of an adiwiyata school. Collaboration among school stakeholders, from planning to program implementation and evaluation, is essential.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate and improve the quality of children's faith formation through catechesis preparation for First Communion in the Parish. The research method is descriptive quantitative, with data collected using surveys through Google Forms. The study population consists of parents or guardians of children preparing for First Communion, with a sample of 23 respondents. Data analysis uses descriptive statistics. The findings indicate that catechesis activities and children's experiences preparing for First Communion significantly impact the quality of children's faith formation. Most respondents reported positive experiences and perceived improvements in their children's understanding and practice of the Catholic faith. However, factors inhibiting optimal faith formation were also identified, particularly the need for increased parental involvement. The study recommends encouraging parental participation, providing necessary resources and guidance for active engagement in children's religious education. To enhance children's faith formation, collaboration between parents, churches, and catechists is recommended, along with establishing effective communication channels between these stakeholders.

Abstract

The study underscores the criticial role of religious moderation in preventing intolerance and radicalism among university students, particularly in Mataram city. The integration of religious moderation in the learning process has not been has been lacking, despite their crucial position in developing high-quality, balanced educational materials. This qualitative research investigates the teaching practices of religious moderation among Islamic education lecturers, employing in-depth interviews with lecturers from three Islamic universities in Mataram City. The findings reveal that religious moderation is taught using a moderate narrative approach that is integrated with other subjects. This is supported by various activity programs centered on moderation. Teaching occurs within a transformative-moderative model that aligns with academic objectives and is disseminated through social media platforms. This research highlights a significant gap in the teaching of religious moderation, both formally and informally, and emphasizes the importance of nurturing this core Islamic principle through social and religious engagement. The study recommends widespread communication of religious moderation goals through inclusive, web-based platforms to promote moderate, just, and tolerant narratives. Additionally, it calls for Islamic education lecturers to carefully design lesson plans and restructure the learning process around religious moderation.

This article has been retracted by the Publisher based on the following reason: The Editor of Jurnal Edukasi has identified an ethical violation related to the practice of gift authorship in the publication of this article. It was found that one of the listed authors did not meet the criteria for authorship as they did not make a substantial contribution to the research, as defined by the guidelines from the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). Following further investigation, it was clarified that the inclusion of this author was made without sufficient justification, which violates the required ethical standards for authorship. One of the conditions for submitting a paper for publication in this journal is that all authors must have made significant intellectual contributions to the work. The inclusion of an author who does not meet these criteria has resulted in the retraction of the article.

Abstract

As a country with a majority Muslim population, Indonesia has strong foundations in religious teachings guiding daily life. However, social changes, technological advances, and globalization present challenges in ensuring character education remains relevant and adaptive. Islamic education in Indonesia is central to shaping individual character based on religious and ethical teachings. This study examines the potential of the Living Values Education (LVE) approach as an innovative mainstream in developing Islamic education in Indonesia. This research is a literature study, involving an in-depth analysis of relevant literature. The study shows that LVE provides a holistic approach covering ethical, moral, social, and emotional aspects. In the context of Islamic education, LVE can strengthen the understanding of religious teachings and associate them with universal virtues. The relevance of LVE lies in educators building learning dynamics based on positive character values. Thus, LVE becomes an innovative alternative in Islamic education, encouraging the creation of intelligent, moral, and creative generations for the nation's future.

Abstract

This study investigates multicultural attitudes among 168 ECE teacher candidates from four state Islamic universities in Indonesia, using a quantitative descriptive design and the Multicultural Attitudes Survey for Teachers. Results indicate a high average multicultural attitude score of 74.12, with candidates demonstrating confidence in managing multicultural classrooms and promoting cultural pride among children. However, their attitudes are primarily based on personal interactions rather than formal coursework. Interviews with 27 respondents further explore multicultural education practices during teaching practicum, revealing a need for improved collaboration with parents and greater emphasis on multicultural education in both teacher education and ECE curricula. Practical implications include integrating multicultural education into teacher education programs, fostering experiential learning for attitude development, and expanding multicultural education coverage in ECE curricula to enhance children's multicultural awareness.

Abstract

Religious moderation has been a government policy since 2015, aimed at countering radicalism and extremism. However, the hierarchical implementation of the program has led to the labeling of "moderate" and "conservative", and the policy's understanding remains unclear among the community, especially the middle class and youth. Despite the government's campaign, intolerance persists. This research aims to review the religious moderation policy and explore how urban Muslim youths could contribute to religious moderation education. The method involves in-depth interviews with urban Muslim youths in Manado and Semarang and critical analysis of relevant documents. The findings suggest that urban Muslim youths prioritize religious moderation through intensive dialogue and gatherings. Current educational practices should incorporate these informal approaches to be more effective. The inclusion of urban Muslim youths in religious moderation education appears to be a promising way to encourage religious moderation in Indonesia. This highlights the need for religious moderation implementation to be responsive to public aspirations.

Abstract

This article aims to explore the Islam-based Children's Spirituality Education (CSE) model in forming students' religious tolerance. This research employs qualitative research incorporating literature study and interviews with numerous teachers teaching religion subject. The research results show that there are four principles of the Islamic CSE model that play a crucial role in strengthening students' religious tolerance, including; 1) respect for other people's beliefs, 2) building a logical, rational and inclusive way of thinking, 3) a spirit of seeking the truth and respecting different truths, and 4) building a spirit of religious moderation and living peacefully side by side with religious beliefs. The advantage of this model lies in its holistic and diverse approach to shaping students' spirituality and recognizing spiritual, emotional, social and cognitive dimensions as an integral part of individual development. The positive implications for Islamic Religious Education include actualizing children's potential according to the principles of Islamic spirituality, supporting the goals of spiritual and moral education, and stimulating understanding of the levels of spirituality in Islam. This model is an effective means of implementing an attitude of tolerance towards non-Muslims through an inclusive and respectful approach towards other beliefs.
