Abstract

The internal Yemen conflict post Arab Spring is one of the conflicts in the Middle East affected by the Arab Spring incident. The demonstration was carried out until Ali Abdullah Saleh was officially stepped down in 2012 and replaced by Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi. However, in 2014 another conflict arose when Houthis was launched millitary attacks and successfully seized control of the Yemeni capital, Sana’a. Until finally President Hadi fled to Saudi Arabia to ask for international intervention. This research tries to explain the reasons for intervention by Saudi Arabia in the Yemen conflict that occurred after the Arab Spring. In analyzing the case, this study will use the concept of balance of power. According to Ziegler, the balance of power operates with four principles; being suspicious of an increase of the power by another country, always ally with the weaker side, support a state only until it is out of danger, and show moderation toward the aggressor after it is defeated. In addition to fulfilling President Hadi’s desires the results of this study indicate that the intervention carried out by Saudi Arabia in the Yemen conflict was also as an effort for balancing the power to restrain Iran's movement for spreading its influence in the Middle East

Abstract

In terms of immigration, Papua New Guinea and Australia have committed to jointly face human smuggling actions, that are closely related to the arrival of refugees and asylum seekers. However, the collaboration between the two countries under the Pacific Solution and PNG Solution policies has caused many disadvantages for Papua New Guinea. Strangely, in 2013, Papua New Guinea signed the agreement documents to collaborate on immigration with Australia. The purpose of this study is to find out the reason behind the availability of Papua New Guinea who are willing to continue their cooperation with Australia on immigration, under Operation Sovereign Borders policy. This research uses the theory of institutional liberalism which is in the neoliberal paradigm. Therefore, the results of this study indicate that the reason for the availability of Papua New Guinea to cooperate with Australia, as evidenced by the signing of cooperation agreement documents between the two nation is, if Papua New Guinea is willing to cooperate, the country will achieve its interests as stated in Papua New Guinea Vision 2050.

InaTEWS is a tsunami early warning system in Indonesia, which is expected to reduce the risk of tsunamis, for the sake of achieving human security. The huge losses in the 2004 tsunami tragedy that struck Aceh and neighboring countries became a starting point for supporting the development of a tsunami in the Indian Ocean region. Germany and various donor countries and other international organizations provide development assistance and development for InaTEWS. Abstract

As a region which holds an important role in keeping the Earth’s temperature, Arctic’s accelerated climate change will not just endanger countries near the Arctic region, but also the world. One of the factors which accelerated the climate change is the increasing use of icebreakers in the past few decades. This research aims to find out the reasons behind the increasing number of icebreakers usage by Arctic Council’s member-states in the past few decades, even though the use of icebreakers harm Arctic Ocean’s sea ice and prevent Arctic Council from fulfilling their purpose. This research uses the theory of liberal institutionalism by Robert Keohane with data collected from conducting literature review. The results of this research show that Arctic Council’s member-states hinder the purpose of the Arctic Council to protect the environment because of their national interests, particularly in economy, that cannot be achieved in the Arctic Council resulting in order to fulfill the interests, countries take their own action.

Abstract

Europe has been the continent in the spotlight since the middle of 2015, UNHCR report in 2015 showed 1,000,573 refugees from the Middle East fled to Europe because of the endless war and security uncertainty. Unfortunately the European Union is still divided over the refugee crisis. Although the European Union Commission has made a decision regarding the relocation scheme for refugees to be distributed fairly among EU countries, there are still some countries that reject the decision. As will be discussed in this study is the decision of the Portuguese government to accept refugees and the decision of the Hungarian government to reject refugees. The purpose of this study is to find out why Portugal and Hungary implemented different policies regarding the Middle East refugee problem. Specifically this research uses the theory of the national roles conception that see internal and external factors as forming the meaning of a country's national role. The study was conducted with qualitative method and descriptive research by using literature review in data collection. The results explain how different meanings of the national roles conception can influence the policies of the governments of Portugal and Hungary in the issue of accepting Middle Eastern refugees.

Abstract

This research seeks to explain then Indonesian Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti's policy to ban foreign vessels from entering the country's waters between 2014 and 2016, as the country was trying to solve its Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing problem. Indonesia was suffering losses not only in terms of economy but also the environment as a consequence of the IUU fishing problem. More importantly, it posed a threat to the country's sovereign rights in its waters. As a result, President Joko Widodo's grand vision of making the country as so-called Global Maritime Fulcrum (GMF) was put to doubt by analysts and scholars alike. By approaching the problem with a realist analytical framework, this research focuses on how Indonesia was trying to curb IUU fishing cases by imposing a moratorium on foreign vessels in order to protect its environment and sovereignty. Using data both from primary and secondary sources, this research finds that the moratorium policy succeeded in creating deterrent effect on the perpetrators and lowering the number of foreign vessels entering the country's waters and thus preventing the number of IUU fishing cases from rising. Furthermore, this research finds that Indonesia managed to secure its fish stocks, to protect the ecosystem in its seas and to help local fishermen to prosper.
