Abstract

Surabraja food trading company produces chili sauce and soy sauce. In July 2019, this company suffered a loss due to the number of broken bottles in the bottle washing process amounting to IDR 29,597,400. This study will identify the causes of defects using the six sigma method. Based on the define, measure, and analyze stages, it was found that the main causes of broken bottle defects were the temperature setting that was too hot and the engine speed that was not optimal. The repair process uses the taguchi experiment by determining the temperature and speed settings. The results of the Taguchi experiment showed that the best selected setting dosage formulations and their levels were A1 and AB2 where A1 (temperature 140°C), and AB2 (speed 10,000 bph). Based on a confirmation experiment with a temperature setting of 140°C, and a speed setting of 10,000 bpd, it was carried out using 48,000 bottles with 5 experiments, and a defect of 505 bottles was obtained. The results of the study concluded that the best results, namely at a temperature of 140°C and a speed of 10,000 bpd, can reduce the defect rate from 780 bottles to 505 bottles per day, and the value of the company's losses from IDR 466,429, - to IDR 301,900, -.

Abstract

Nowadays, a structure of sandwich composites can be reinforced by with hybrid materials such as polypropylene core. Due to its high strength properties, the polypropylene is widely used in various fields of science, technology and engineering including aerospace applications. This research studies the well-known hybrid composites of a carbon fiber (CF) and glass fiber (GF) to evaluate the mechanical properties under the presence of sandwich composites reinforced with such fibers. The different curing-pressure values of each material workpiece have been investigated to determine the curing pressure, resulting in the superior performances and properties. The specimens are moulded by the hand lay-up (i.e., cloth laying angle) of the carbon fiber. By changing direction, the specimens are determined the greatest load-bearing direction based on the bending test. According to the ASTM standard on the strength determination, it is found that when the curing pressure increases, the flexural stress increases. By placing the material orientation in the order (i.e., [CF90 / CF0 / GF0 / Core / GF0 / CF0 / GF0]) provides the highest strength. When the strain reaches its maximum value, the specimens actually fracture. The fracture propagation is generally followed the fiber orientation of the fabric. The experimental results are observed that the lower curing pressure the thicker of the work piece and the fiber volume fraction decreases. The obtained results show that changes in the curing pressure and laying angle significantly affect the mechanical properties of the sandwich composites

Abstract

PT. Gansa Furindo Indonesia (GFI) is a company engaged in painting and powder coating services established in 1990. In the process of making such a long and involving painting machine and labor, it does not cover the possibility of work accidents. There are 3 categories of work accidents: minor accidents, moderate accidents, and serious/major accidents. For the 3 crash categories, it is seen how severe the injuries suffered in the work accident. This study aims to determine the steps to prevent and repair work accidents after knowing the categories of work accidents that occur. This research is focused on the production department, especially in the machining area where work accidents occur due to the lack of employee awareness of Health Safety and Environment (HSE). Work accidents include crashing objects with a static state of 108 RPN, contact with the machine while moving when taking the material inside the machine is 196 RPN, short circuit of 160 RPN, reverse mounting of 90 RPN and less neat cutting in the iron cutting of 168 RPN. Therefore, improvements are made in preventing work accidents that occur by making the latest Standard Operational Procedure (SOP).

Abstract

Demand for lightweight and durable components for automotive applications is increasing, such as brake discs. This paper presents an investigation on new material for brake discs which is metal matrix composite (MMC). This new material offers high strength – lightweight performance and high thermal conductivity if applied to automotive brake discs. This paper also explores new designs for brake disc using MMC as the material. The objective of this study is to present a recommendation for new brake disc material and design which can replace the existing one in terms of higher braking performance. Modelling, simulation, and multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) technique were used toselect the best design of MMC brake disc. The results show that Design 6 (with angular grooves) has the best performance at dissipating heat, reaching the highest temperature of 284.66°C and it has the lowest deformation of 0.589 mm. Subsequent analysis using MCDM shows that Deign 6 has the highest normalised priority of 0.2742 or the best alternative. The combination of MMC as the new material and new design can improve thermal and structural performance, hence improving the vehicle braking performance.

Abstract

Sustainable procurement is developing among practitioners and academics, but not many have done this research with the object of higher education institutions. This study succeeded in obtaining twelve indicators of sustainable procurement in higher education in Indonesia. The interpretive structural modeling method is used to model these indicators so that a four-level model is obtained, where the first level consists of seven indicators, the second level is one indicator, the third level is two indicators, and the fourth level is two indicators. In addition, the twelve indicators were also grouped using MICMAC analysis into four quadrants. Eight indicators are included in the autonomous indicators quadrant, four indicators are included in the independent indicators quadrant. Nothing is included in the dependent indicators and linkage indicators quadrant. This study proposes to the management of higher education to improve the performance of sustainable procurement, starting from level four indicators, namely the existence of routine monitoring and sustainability criteria (P12) and there is awareness of sustainable procurement on campus internals (P2).

Abstract

Fiber-reinforced plastic laminates (FRPL) and sandwich composites are outstanding materials due to its mechanical properties (i.e., light weight, low density and high strength to weight ratio). These applications are widely used in the fields of aviation, automotive and construction industries. The superior mechanical properties depend on the properties of reinforcing materials, matrixes and manufacturing processes. This research proposes the comprehensive study of mechanical properties of epoxy resin reinforced by glass fibers under different processes. Glass-fiber sandwich composites were manufactured by the hand lay-up process and cured in different methods (i.e., with and without vacuum bagging). The comparison between curing temperature and pressure is investigated using the vacuum bagging process to determine the mechanical properties under flexural tests. Experimental tests are performed using the universal testing machine (UTM). As a result, it is confirmed that the hand lay-up process affects the flexural stress, deflection and internal force of both fiber-reinforced plastic laminates and sandwich composites. At the high curing temperature, the vacuum bagging method significantly provides the greater flexural stress, deflection and load
