environmental damages are acknowledged to be the negative impacts of the existence and activities of human. The impacts have been the major issues in the world such as the ozone hole, the earth temperature that is increasing significantly and the natural disasters. People need to change their paradigms and habits immediately to prevent further destruction on earth. Reutilizing used materials is one way, among other ways, to lessen the environment exploitation, even though it is not directly related to carbon dioxide reduction issue which is promoted by the KyotoProtocol supporters. However, in the realm of art and design, it is really relevant to creativity and at the same time, endorsing the sustainable design principles. Keywords: sustainable design, recycle, reused material

Abstract

This article discusses the development o f rustic craps nowadays. Rustic craft in this articlemeans a work o f craft that is "made'' o f natural materials, such as roots, and ru ral-folk-crafts, fo r example,"lesutig" and "luku " (plough). These kinds o f crafts are becoming popular among the middle-to-high classcommunities in the cities. The crafts function ils a signifier in gaining social status which differentiate c,certain class with other classes, and also fulfil their needs o f a different life style and their aesthetkal value.Such a condition increases a valorization o f rustic craft in economical and symbolic sense, but, at the sametime, creates an ironic condition especially in the context o f sccio-cultural shifting in a rural area. Thevillagers, especially the farmers, are withdrawn from their socio cultural base since they become unfamiliarwith their fvlk-funitiunul-crufts.Key ivords: life style, craft, rustic craft, discourse, valorization.

The growth of  information  technology that then followed by the globalization forces  the higher education institutions to revitalize their selves and to reconsider their business and working concept.  The most urgent thing to be done in identifying the nation competences and then translating and ultimately  selling those competences in global market is producing exceptional human capital. Higher education institution is responsible to run that function. Abstract

Surrealism, which was coined in the First Manifesto o f Surrealism by Andre Breton in 1924,indeed begun and was centred in Paris, before spreading nut to a number o f countries beyond F.urop?,including the Pacific region. Interestingly, in the Surrealist international map published in 1929, Francewas not there, and it was as i f the USA never existed, whereas it was the Pacific Regioti which was regardedas the centre o f the world. The Parisian Surrealist highly appreciated art from the region. As a mutter offad, there were really artists in a number o f countries, including Indonesia, who were well-accepted andappropriated Surrealism according to their respected culture. In Yogyakarta, surrealists' works o f artemerged phenomenally in the 1970s and have been continuously produced until now. RegardingIndonesian surrealism, M. Dioi Marianto suggests that surrealism exists in any culture and society. TheParisian culture did not come to Yogyakarta directly but through reproductions o f Surrealists’ w o rkprinted in Modem Art books. Images o f surrealist works were then seen and adopted by many artists asuxiys o f producing surrealistic works o f art. In this resjyect it is more appropriate to regard the ParisianSurrealism as having triggered surrealist virtual potentials or tendencies that hud indeed been embedded inthe culture and sub-cultures streaming through Yogyakarta as a state o f mind.Keyu>ords: Surrealism, Parisian Surrealist, state o f mind

Abstract

Netherlands East Indies in Photography. The Dutch colonization in Indonesia caused two different cultures- the Western culture (Europe-Dutch) and the Eastern culture (Indonesia) - to meet. Each was supported by distinct ethnic with dissimilar social structure as well. This situation resulted in the fact that the Dutch culture enriched the Eastern cultures, Javanese culture for instance. The Dutch culture influenced broader field and various culture elements. The Indies style was developed to cope with the historical, political, social, economical, art and cultural condition. The Indies style can be sensed in many forms of documentation, photography to mention one. Meanwhile, the need of visual information to be used in knowledge development and the tracing of human civilization became crucial. Basically, photography concerns with how this recording technology encourages the effort to study the need. This study aimed at proofing that photography in Netherlands East Indies was not merely a recording aid,but also an agent of modernization and of life style changes. It also illustrated how the Eastern image was projected by the Western (Orientalism)Keywords: photography, Indies culture, Orientalism

Abstract

Batik and traditional woven cloth the Indonesian cultural heritage created by skilled hands canstill compete with imported products and are considered to possess high artistic characteristics(craftsmanship). Nowadays, they retain a strong presence throughout Indonesian society reflecting thesocial changes which have occurred within society because o f technological development. The creativity andinnovation involved in producing new things represents the identity o f each region in Indonesia. Thegovernment should put their effort into increasing the awareness o f producers to include the tag "Made inIndonesia " on their products. By doing so, the government educates consumers to know and believe that theitems they wear arc the product o f their culture. Such an effort, instead o f being on its own, is a part o f broaderproduction system which forms a value-added chain. Cooperation between the upper and lower ends o f thischain can provide positive benefits. Even though the flood o f imported products is unavoidable, there isnothing to be concerned about since Indonesian consumers have benefited as well. However.; should we leaveit as it is? /4s children o f the nation, we are supposed to reflect, offer introspection and, eventually, dosomething to do something so that the local products can be accepted more by their own people. Keywords : national identity, import-focused, value-added chain
