Abstract

Abstract - This study aims at investigating the extent of cumulative causation effect on economic growth disparity across the regions: Basajan-Pijay, Northeast, South-West, and Central-Inland in the Aceh Province, Indonesia. It also includes some others factors in determining economic growth disparity such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita, the concentration of economic activity areas, Human Development Index (HDI), the labour productivity of the region, the allocation of public investment as well as the accessibility among regions in the Aceh Province. To capture the goals of this study, it uses panel data during the period 2000 to 2010 consisting of 23 districts/cities of Aceh Province. The results show that the potential conditions for convergence because the dominant factor affecting the disparity without entering variable cumulative effect, the concentration of economic activity among regions have positive and negatively affected HDI. By entering variable cumulative effects, it turns HDI to have a negative effect, while the cumulative effect of the growth of inter-regional and the GDP per capita were positive. Thus, it can be said that the economic disparity among regions has the potential for convergence if and only if there is a policy intervention by the government in improving the quality of education, health, and consumer purchasing power to reduce the disparity. It is recommended that the Government of Aceh and District/City Government should encourage the growth of GDP per year, equal to or above the average growth of the national economy in order to increase labour productivity so that economic prosperity has also increased (spread effect is greater than backwash effect) because workings of the cumulative effect of growth within the region and among regions. Keywords      :   Disparity, Backwash effect, Spread Effect, Economic Growth, AcehPaper Type :     Research Paper

Abstract

Abstract - This paper reviews some of the central concerns and findings of writings on forests as they related to the theoretical ambitions of commons scholars, and to efforts to govern forests more sustainably and equitably in Aceh. The review is especially important in the context of unfolding efforts to govern forests in new ways over the past three decades cause conflict between Government Republic of Indonesia and Free of Aceh Movement. However, as important as the review is an assessment of the achievements of this literature, existing blind spots, and potential new areas of exciting research and investigation. The review suggests specific areas in relation to methods, data, and theories of common property that will advance the field further. It would be no exaggeration to say that the study of forests as commons has been central to the development of scholarship on common property. Equally certainly, the interest in forests has generated a vast corpus of research outside the field of common property. The magnitude, variety, and depth of this body of research is an accurate reflection of the many different ways in which forests have been and continue to be central to human survival, livelihoods, and prosperity. Keyword        : Free of Aceh Movement, Government Republic of Indonesia, common property, conflictPaper Type   : Research Paper

Abstract

Abstract - This article is aimed at describing the ideology of Islam in the Indonesian linguistic politeness system. The population was the emails posted to the mailing list by the members of Indonesian Moslem Society in America (IMSA) and the topic of discussion was Islam. The reason for choosing the topic is that it has potential to reveal expressions of linguistic politeness even as it encourages participation of the members, since it is a topic of interest to everyone. The sample was the email threads triggered by an article entitled ‘Mendeteksi virus liberal’ (Detecting the liberal virus), which followed by four, more-focused topics of discussion derived from the first, chronologically:  Kaca retak (Cracked mirror), Apakah Islam Agama yang Sempurna? (Is Islam a Perfect Religion), Apakah status ke-Islam-an JJ? (Is JJ a good Muslim?); and Memutus Rantai Permusuhan (Breaking the chain of enmity) which cover 57 emails during the period of April 26, 2011 to Mei 16, 2011 and written by 25 members of the IMSA. The method of study was discourse analysis by following the procedure such as: a) Identifying the expressions of disagreement; b) Identifying politeness strategies used; c) Classifying the politeness strategies; d) Identifying dispreferred utterances; e) Classifying dispreferred utterances: and f) Finding out the ideology of Islam in Indonesian linguistic politeness system. The findings show that the politeness strategies used are: a) professing personal-inadequacy on the matter at hand; b) posing questions; c) referring to Al Qur’an/Al Hadits and the precedents set by other pious Muslims; and d) complimenting, honouring, and praying for one another. Dispreferred utterances include: a) those who complimenting themselves; b) those who criticize others, making jokes on others, gossiping others, and making the situation more critical; and c) those who threaten others. The ideology of Islam that lies behind linguistic politeness is: a) the ideology of “watawa shaubil haq watawa shaubish shabr’’, an Arabic phrase meaning ‘Muslims must point one another towards the truth and they must do it patiently’; b) The ideology that implies that linguistic  politeness is not only concerned with the present but is believed to have consequences for the hereafter; and c) The ideology which believe linguistic politeness does not merely concern communication and living in harmony with others, as previous theories suggest, but more importantly it concerns with keeping Muslim brotherhood and with one’s self-actualization as obedient to God. It is suggested for future researchers to compare the findings with data from oral communication.   Keywords    :   Islamic ideology,  Indonesian language, politenessPaper Type:    Research Paper

Abstract

Abstract - This study assessed the impact of entrepreneurship skill acquisition on poverty in Kogi State of Nigeria. The study made use of primary data collected with the aid of a well-structured questionnaire, which were administered by well-trained enumerator to beneficiaries of entrepreneurship acquisition skills randomly sampled from six Local Government Area of the state. The data collected through the questionnaire was analyzed using descriptive statistics like frequencies and percentages. The result shows that 65% of the respondents accepted that lack of entrepreneurship skills among youth is responsible for the high rate of poverty in Nigeria. The result also revealed that at least 60% of the people that benefitted from the skill acquisition programme can now afford the basic necessity of life. The study therefore recommended that since most of the people that benefited from the programme could afford the basic necessity of life, the government should begin to think of the way of developing the programme to the status of poverty eradication programme. Keywords     : Entrepreneur; Vocation; Skill acquisition; Poverty; Alleviation; OptimumPaper Type : Research Paper

Abstract

Abstract - Liquidity risk arises from maturity mismatches where liabilities have a shorter tenor than assets. A sudden rise in the borrowers‟ demands above the expected level can lead to shortages of cash or liquid marketable assets (Oldfield and Santamero, 1997). This paper aims to analyse the liquidity risks and disclosure as well as to draw the relationship between liquidity risks and financial performance measures using return on assets (ROA) and return of equity (ROE) of the Islamic banks. Based on selected Islamic banks in Malaysia over the period from 2006 to 2008, the study also attempts to determine the impact of the global financial crisis on the Islamic banks‟ liquidity risks and financial performance. Findings of the study contribute towards enriching the literature on the risk management of the Islamic banks by providing deeper understanding on issues relating to liquidity risk management by the Islamic banks.

Abstract

Abstract - Speaking politely is one of the pragmatic competencies of  language users. The fact shows that Indonesian children Muslim writers produce impolite utterances through the characters and conflicts they create in the story books published by the Islamic publishers. The impolite utterances are  interpreted as violating the principles of speaking politely as suggested by the Holy Qur’an. A small corpus analysis used in this study is aimed at finding preliminary data on the impolite language used by children for further research, while at the same time showing how the data present children pragmatic incompetence and violation of the Qur’anic principles of being polite. The findings show that affective and coercive impoliteness are presented in the stories. In addition, the study finds the following: a) the issues which drive impolite utterances are competition between siblings, schoolmates, and bad teacher-student relationship; b) the lexicon used include animals, physical appearance, and behavioral assessment. In the level of syntax, declarative, interrogative, and imperative moods are used; c) the Qur’anic principles violated by the impolite utterances are Qaulan Ma’rufa (speaking nicely), Qaulan Karima (speaking honorably), and Qaulan Layyina (speaking softly); and d) the violation of the Qur’anic principles is seen as reflecting the pragmatic incompetence of the characters and the authors in the way that they fail to create dialogues with refinement which reflect principles of Islam in the context of conflict.

Abstract

Abstract - This study re-examines the interaction between bank loans and stock prices in Malaysia. We use Granger non-causality test proposed by Toda and Yamamoto (1995) in both bivariate and multivariate frameworks and both monthly and quarterly data in examining the relationship between the two variables. Unlike previous studies, we find that there is strong evidence of no causality running between stock prices and bank loans in all models and samples. This finding revealed that stock prices and bank loans are independent. The predictability of stock prices cannot be enhanced considerably through utilizing information on the bank loans.

Abstract

Abstract - This study explores the economic integration among the ASEAN-5 economies over two sample periods; the pre-crisis period (1990 to 1996) and post-crisis period (2000 to 2006). Using the output-price approach, it attempts to determine if the nature of integration among these economies has changed due to the Asian financial crisis in 1997. In methodology, the study adopts the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) approach and Vector Error Correction Model (VECM). The results show that the crisis has a deep imprint on the degree of economic integration among these countries. The results provide important inputs for macroeconomic policy formulation at the regional level.

Abstract

Abstract - Gold and silver became the most widely accepted and circulated form of money in the medieval world. Even though paper money was introduced, state banks continued to store their equivalent in gold. In 1971 the US government abolished the Bretton Woods system and exchanged with the floating or fiat economy system which soon became the standard currency system worldwide. Many economies felt compelled to adopt the new US currency system because of the strength of the all-dominating American dollar and criticism was sparse. Disappointingly, no Muslim government produced legal rulings (fatwas) which rejected the legality of the fiat system and demanded the return to gold and silver backed currency. The single fatwa issued in Saudi Arabia in 1985 concluded that paper currency had completely replaced gold and silver and that all previous Islamic legal rulings issued on gold and silver were now applicable to paper currency. This paper study critically and evaluates the consequences of the Muslim intellectuals and Fiqh Academies‟ approval of substitution of gold and silver by banknotes on the Muslims and their nations.
