Abstract

This descriptive qualitative research is conducted to know the students’ competency in Englishthrough their achievements in English Proficiency Test (EPT) and the translation qualityassessment result. The data from EPT achievement scores were analyzed statistically byconsidering the lowest, average and highest scores. While the data from the translation resultwere analyzed with translation approach by using translation assessment instrument and theContent Analysis method by Spradley.  The results of the analysis shows that most of the data 83data (55 %) were translated accurately, there are 49 data (33%) are considered as less accuratetranslation and the rest, there are 18 data (12 %) are considered as inaccurate translation.Moreover, from acceptability assessment most of the sentences of the target text 80 data (53%)are evaluated as acceptable, there are 51 data (34 %) in this research that are considered asless acceptable and the rest 19 data (13%) in this research that are considered as unacceptabletranslation. Although most of the data are accurate and acceptable, it cannot be inferred that thetranslation of the abstract by the students of engineering field is high-quality. The reason isbecause there are still many data that are less accurate and less acceptable if it is seen from thetransfer of the source text content. This condition reflects the translation competence of thestudent is fair and need to practice more in translating different kind of texts to improve theirtranslation competency.

Abstract

The research aims to discuss Miss Havisham’s insanity and its effect toward herself and othercharacter in Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations. The objectives of the research are todescribe Miss Havisham’s insanity and figure out the effect of Miss Havisham’s insanitytoward herself and other character, such as Pip and Estella. The theories that are used in thisstudy are character and characterization in order to find out the effect of Miss Havisham’sinsanity toward other characters. While the theories of insanity as Diogenes Syndrome is todescribe the scale of Miss Havisham’s insanity.  The method of this research is said to bedescriptive, and the technique of data collecting used is library research. There are twoapproaches used in the analysis namely psychological and sociological approach. The resultof the research shows Miss Havisham’s insanities based on Diogenes Syndrome are selfneglect,domestic squalor, and social withdrawal. Miss Havisham’s insanity takes effect onherself and making her hate every men and deny her own feeling. Meanwhile, MissHavisham’s insanity also takes effect toward other character, such as Pip and Estella. InEstella, Miss Havisham’s insanity makes her become Miss Havisham’s doll and makes her asa rude woman. In Pip, Miss Havisham’s insanity makes him love Estella and change hisdream from a blacksmith boy into a gentleman. In conclusion, Miss Havisham’s insanity cantake effect toward herself and other character, such as Pip and Estella.

Abstract

This research aims to prove that EGRA technique (Experience, Generalization, Reinforcement,Application) can improve the students’ grammar mastery. It was conducted in State PolytechnicMadiun from April to September 2018. The subjects of the research were the second semesterstudents of English Department consisting of 27 students. This action research covered twocycles. Each consisted of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. In this research theresearcher employed qualitative and quantitative data analysis. Based on the research findingsfrom teaching-learning process in the two cycles, the researcher can draw some finalconclusions. The students’ response was very good after implementing EGRA technique. Thestudents were active in giving answer of each question.. It was also shown from the improvementof the mean scores in every cycle as follows : mean score in pre-test was 63, post test in the firstcycle was 70, and  post-test in the second cycle was 80. There was improvement in every cycle.Additionally, there were 24 of 27 students who got point up 75 in the second cycle, it means itwas 89 %. Based on the finding, the alternative hypothesis stating that EGRA technique canimprove the students’ grammar mastery. Keywords: Implementation, EGRA Technique, and Grammar Mastery

Abstract

This research is a pragmatic study which discusses speech acts in Meme Comics. The source ofdata is facebook of Meme Comics. This research applied the descriptive method. The kinds ofspeech acts in Meme Comics are classified into  representatives, directives, commisives,expressives, and declaratives. Expressives speech acts is the most frequently found. Then, theleast speech acts which are found are commissives speech acts. Furthermore, the functions ofrepresentative speech acts contain of the act of asserting and concluding. Meanwhile, there aresome functions in directives such as to order and to request. In commissives, there are somefunctions which are found such as to promise and to offer. The functions in expressives are toexpress anger, shock, dissapointment, amazement, suspicion, and insinuation. Next, there aresome functions in declaratives such as to confirm and to declare. The most frequently functionsof speech acts are the act of asserting and the least functions of speech act are the act ofexpressing suspicion, amazement, and confirmation. The kinds of speech acts are used toexpress the satire and sarcasm about everyday life in Meme Comics.Keyword: Pragmatics, Speech Acts, Meme Comics

Abstract

This study discussed about the cultural words in the online news sites named BBC News. Itexplained also the techniques, methodes, and ideology choosen and applied by thetranslator. The data was collected from an online news site named BBC News and itstranslation. This research applied the descriptive-qualitative method. This research appliedalso the purposive sampling because the population of this study was too large. Thetechniques are used to analyze the data called as domain analysis, taxonomic analysis, andcomponential analysis. Then, for the result of all of analysis named as cultural themeanalysis. The finding of this research presented all of cultural words included in Newmark’sdescription. Some techniques employed to translate the cultural words, namely adaptation(14), addition (3), established equivalent (24), generalization (5), and pure borrowing (14).Addition is the least employed translation technique, but the most frequently is technique ofestablished equivalent. Then, the method which emphasis on the target language is choosen.In terms of ideology, the ideology of domestication is the ideology which is choosen andapplied by the translator.Keywords:  Translation, Cultural Words, Techniques, Methods, Ideology

Abstract

There are some important aspects in teaching English especially writing skill such aslecturers as the mediator on teaching and learning process, the methods as the way totransfer the knowledge and train the skill, and the goal of the study as the aim of teaching. Allthe targets are based on how well they colaborate all aspects during the process of teachingand learning. Cognitive Strategy Instruction in Writing (CSIW)was chosen to know theeffectiveness, streghts, and weaknesses in improving the writing skill of the Second Semesterof English Study Program of Madiun State Polytechnic in the Academic Year of 2017/2018.The qualitative and quantitative data were used in this research. Qualitative data were takenfrom the scores of the pre-test of twenty eight studemnts from A class and all cycles of theresearch. The qauntitative data were taken through the observation, interview, andquestionnaire. Based on the discussions and conclusions, Cognitive Strategy Instruction InWriting (CSIW) is recomended to improve the writing skill of the Second Semester of EnglishStudy Program of Madiun State Polytechnic in the Academic Year of 2017/2018.  Keywords: CAR, writing skill, CSIW

Abstract

The research aimed to discuss the natural and supernatural symbolism in WashingtonIrving‟s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle. The objectives of the researchwere to describe what the meanings of natural and supernatural symbolism were. Afterdescribed the meaning, the symbols in the stories would be related to the main characters.The theories that are used in this study were symbolism to find the meaning of natural andsupernatural symbolism in both stories. The gothic theory was to support the symbolismtheory related to supernatural symbolism. The theory of setting also supported the theory ofsymbolism. The technique of data collecting was library research, while the method of thisresearch was descriptive. There were two approaches used in the study. They werepsychological and structural approach. The result of the research showed that supernaturalaspect had an impact to people who experienced it. The first story told about IchabodCrane, he was good teacher from big city. He taught in Sleepy Hollow because of his duty.He had interest in horror story. But the urban legend of Sleepy Hollow made him leave thevillage. The second story was about Rip Van Winkle who disappeared for almost twentyyears. He had been sleeping for that time after encountered with the ghost of Hudson crew.His experienced then became a story among travellers in his village.  Keywords: Symbolism, Supernatural, Gothic.
