Scripta-English Department Journal is Journal that publishes academic articles that recognize successful engaged learning depends on effective partnerships between students, faculty, community agencies, administrators, disciplines, and more. The journal invites submission of 1) Research that emanates from or informs campus-community partnerships; 2) Studies co-authored by faculty, students, and/or community partners; 3) Literature, Teaching English as Foreign Language and Technology; and 4) Commentary on emerging trends, developments, and/or challenges. The publication of this journal aims to spread conceptual thinking or ideas and the research findings obtained in the field of English Education and Literature. This journal will publish twice a year;  May and  November. The scope of Scripta-Journal of English Language Education is on Research on English linguistics and literature. We focus on: 1) LANGUAGE SCIENCE (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, mother tongue, language acquisition, ethnolinguistics, Critical Discourse Analysis/CDA, forensic linguistics). 2) LITERATURE SCIENCE (Oral literature and written literature with various approaches to structuralism, literary psychology, sociology of literature, post colonial. 4) Teaching English as a second or foreign language. Abstract

The aim of this study is to find out whether the use of drama is effective or not in teachingspeaking at the eighth grade of State Junior High School (SMPN) 1 Pejagoan in the academic year of2017/2018. In this study , the two classes of the eighth grade were taken as the population and sample ofSMP N 1 Pejagoan in the academic year of 2017/2018. There were 60 students taken as the samples .The data analysis techniques employed were descriptive and inferential analysis. The formula of t-testwas applied to prove whether it is effective or not. After analyzed the data, the researcher found that thestudents’ achievement of experiment group was better than control group. The means score ofexperimental group was 85.60 and the means score of control group was 73.73, it could be seen from thefinal result of t-test analysis which stated that t-value was higher than t-table (7.54>2.00). Therefore, itcan be conclude that the use of Drama Technique in teaching speaking at the eighth grade of SMP N 1Pejagoan in the academic year of 2017/2018 is effective.

Abstract

-This study aims to find the students’ problem during English e-learning as the base inproviding new variations for teachers in conducting e-learning. It belongs to a descriptive qualitativeresearch. The data is in the form of questionnaire answers taken from twenty students of some seniorhigh schools of Purworejo. The writers use the mean of score scale in analyzing the data. From theanalysis of data, it is found that in their e-learning, most of the students get bored since the learningprocess is monotonous, feel hard since there are too much assignment with lack of explanation, and feellost guided for the absence of a real teacher manifestation. Based on the gotten problems, the writersoffer the use of Edmodo application to provide new variation for teachers in conducting e-learningespecially in English teaching. In Edmodo, there are many complete and complex features. So it providesanother way for teachers and students to have better complement each other in e-learning. In conclusion,to solve the students’ problems in English e-learning, the teachers should be literate with the existingtechnology in the efforts of providing effective and interesting e-learning.

Abstract

Virtual education is a growing and evolving system that creates new opportunities for forming and upgrading people’s skills with a non-presential factor, which allows students from different regions and backgrounds to gain instant access to quality education and knowledge. In recent years, many online platforms have been joining to these new systems allowing to create a virtual environment, even professional institutions, such as colleges and universities, are offering their entire specialty in different online programs. Although, online education has evolved and improved since its apparition after the internet commercialization, many problems still remain unsolved and challenging its effectiveness; self-motivations and virtual drop-out are one of the common factor among virtual learners, besides the lack of required technology and resources in different places, especially in developing countries. Even there are problems, virtual education is changing the way how we consume educational content and it is helping to connect students and teachers all over the world in again-to-gain way, so in the coming years, its role is expected to be more critical in our education system.

Abstract

The objectives of the research is to find out whether is any positive and significant influenceof influence of the use social media on students’ reading ability at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 4Purworejo in the academic year of 2019/2020.. The sample involved 50 students by applying purposivesampling. The population of this study is the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Purworejo in theacademic year of 2019/2020. The total of the eighth grade students is 256 students. formula.Theinstruments to take the data by questionnaire to observing the use of social media and by reading test toobserving the reading comprehension skill. Mean and standard deviation are used in the descriptiveanalysis, while test of linearity and hypothesis is used in the inferential analysis. The main result of thisresearch is (1) the use of social media can be categorized in sufficient level with M = 74.56, the SD =9.73 and S = 94,741 at the range 70-79. (2) the students’ reading ability can be categorized in excellentlevel with M = 77.8, the SD = 16.394and S = 268.776 at the range 80 – 100. (3) the result of hyphotesistest shows that the value of correlation is 0.312 which is higher than 0.279 rtable 5%. It means that theuse of social media influence the students’ reading ability as big as 9.8% and the residue is 90.2%influenced by other factor. The significant value of regression based on SPSS 16.0 is 0.027which islower than 0.05. It means that there is a positive and significant influence between two variables.

Abstract

Data is a driving factor in our current society, its presence is in each simple and complex system holding important insights and clues that can lead to a better performance; although its importance people usually tend to ignore its potential of discovering and organizing unusual and interesting patterns and connections within. The “Big data” era provides us with a stable and huge ground to support modern business and analytics models, which may impact directly the way how we perceive present actions and spotting possible future tendencies, improving and enhancing current decision models. This paper tries to highlight some of the various uses and strategies that several organizations are given to their databases and their data structures, and describing some of the most salient and widespread achievements made by the correct use and manipulation of a data warehouse; moreover, a revision to some syllabus of major universities and colleges were analyzed to detect tendencies on the way how professional are being formed regarding to managing data and its corresponding analysis

Abstract

This research is intended to know the effect of using picture to the students’ ability in writingnarrative text. In order to answer the problem, the researchers use some theories, namely: Cohen andRiel (1989), Byrne (1997), Heaton (1988), Callahan (1992). In this article, the researchers usequantitative methodology. Researchers use students at SMAS Dharma Pancasila Medan grade XI as thepopulation and use 58 students as the sample. The instrument in this article is a written test and the testis about writing Narrative text. From the data analysis, the researchers give the score of each student inevery group and calculate it, the researchers find that the result of analyzing the data, the score of t-testis higher than t-table, where the t-table is 2.00 and t-test is 7.00. So, t-test is higher than t-table. Thedata analysis shows that there is a significant effect in using series of picture to the ability of the studentsin writing narrative text at grade XI of SMAS Dharma Pancasila. It meant that Ha was accepted H0 wasrejected.

Abstract

This article is based on a study which aims at the finding out components ofcommmunicaton stratedies and sufficiency of strategic competence in Bahasa Inggristextbook. The data analyzed are the models of speaking text taken from Bahasa Inggristextbook. There are 5 texts in the textbook. The finding of the study reveals there is nocommunication strategies used in the textbook.

Abstract

This study uses descriptive qualitative because the researcher would like todescribe about the structures and the function of prepositional phrases found in thesong lyrics of Fool’s Garden’s Album Dish of the Day and its application in teachingwriting recount text. The researcher used documentation method to collect the data.The researcher did some steps such as listening, searching, reading, finding, collectingdata and coding the data.The result of this study shows that there are three structures of prepositionalphrases. They are 96 Preposition + Noun / Noun Phrase (95. 5%), 4 Preposition + NounClause (3. 9 %), and 1 Preposition + ing Phrase (0. 9 %). Whereas, based on thefunctions, there are three functions of prepositional phrases. They are 17 post-modifierof a noun (20.4%), 5 post-modifier of an adjective (6.0%), and 61 adverbial (73.4 %). Inaddition, the prepositional phrases found in Song Lyrics of Fool’s Garden’s Album Dish ofthe Day can be applied in teaching writing at the tenth grade students of Senior HighSchool particularly in recount text.

Abstract

Vocabulary is one of English components that must be taught to the students becausevocabulary has an important role for all language skills. But in teaching vocabulary, thestudents have difficulties in memorizing new words; so they lack of vocabulary. Theobjective of this research is to find out whether there is any effectiveness of using bingogame in teaching vocabulary to eight grade students of SMP N 15 Purworejo in academicyear 2016/2017.This research belongs to experimental research. This research wascarried out at SMP N 15 Purworejo. The total number of the population is 160 students.This research used 64 sample. To collect the data, the researcher used pre-test and posttest as the treatment. Then, the data result analyzed by using t-test formula.The resultof the mean of score of post test of experimental group is higher than control group(80.31 > 66.88). In addition, the result of t-value is 5.57. Then, the researcher conslutsthe critical value on the t-table using 5% (0.05) alpha level significance and the degree offreedom is 1.697. It means that that the use of bingo game in teaching vocabulary of atthe grade at the eighth grade students of SMP N 15 Purworejo in the academic year of2016/2017 is effective.

Abstract

This writing is based on the research of analyzing the elements of fitzgerald’s novelthe great Gatsby. This research is included in descriptive qualitative research. Theresearcher chooses the novel since it is about American, the English nativespeaker, for its application to English educational interests, especially teachingreading. The findings tell us that the story takes place at some parts of America.Since its theme is about love, it will inspire everybody in his/her era. Through thefirst person point of view, the author conveys the plot nicely.
