Abstract

This study aimed at describing the students? profile in reading comprehension of the ninth grade in five junior high schools in Singaraja which is described from five dimensions, namely; 1) general or main idea, 2) certain information or details or implied information, 3) word reference, 4) word meaning, and 5) communicative purpose used in the text. The obtained data were analyzed using descriptive method. Based on the findings of this study, it could be concluded that the students? profile in determining the general or main idea of the text was categorized as instructional level because they got average score of 50. The students got average score 50.47 in determining certain or details or implied information of the text which was categorized as instructional level. In determining word reference, the students? profile was categorized as independent level because they got average score of 60. The students got average score determining word meaning 40. It was categorized as instructional level. In determining communicative purpose, the students? profile was categorized as independent level because they got average score of 40.keyword : students? profile, reading comprehension

Abstract

This study is a Research and Development study (R&D) which aimed at (1) identifying problem in the existing materials used at SMK Triatma Jaya Singaraja, (2) identifying the needs of the English materials for SMK students, (3) determining the suitable design of the English materials for SMK Students, (4) developing English materials for SMK Students, (5) measuring the effectiveness of the English materials developed, (6) determining the quality of the materials developed. The research was conducted at SMK Pariwisata Triatma Jaya Singaraja in academic year 2012/2013. The subject of the study was the eleventh grade students of Food & Beverage Department. The data of the present study was collected by interview, questionnaire test and document analysis. The instruments used in the present study were interview guide, document analysis worksheet, questionnaire, and rubric. The data of the present study was analyzed descriptively and quantitatively. This present study showed that (1) the problems faced by the existing materials used at SMK Triatma Jaya Singaraja are irrelevancy of the materials with the department of the students, insufficiency of pictures and illustration on the materials, and non-existence of the clear statement of the development of the values of nation character. (2) The need of the English materials for SMK students are the materials must follow the basic competences of the syllabus, the materials must include English expression, text, and grammar focus, reading materials should be quite long, materials discuss kitchen work safety, materials must include earth saving program, materials must discus the technology in kitchen, materials must be equipped with sufficient pictures, and the materials should relate to F & B service. (3) The English material for SMK students are designed to meet the need of school syllabus, teacher, students and tourism industry, should insert the values of nation character, and conform with the criteria of good materials. (4) The materials development model used are the combination of Dick and Carey and Tomlinson Models. The new model consists of five major stages. They are (a) need analysis, (b) drafting, (c) expert judgment, (d) field test, and (e) production. (5) The materials developed were less effective than the old materials. The average score for pre-test was 78.2 and the average score for post-test was 73. It was because of (a) time limitation, (b) length of the text, and (c) students? readiness. (6) The quality of the materials developed is excellent. The final product of this research was the department related and character based English Materials completed with compact disc (CD) for listening material. Abstract

Abstract This study aimed at describing and explaining the cohesion and coherence created by the ninth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Gianyar  in their narrative writings. Another aim was to describe and explain the problems encountered by  students in their narratives. This study used qualitative research which focused on  describing and explaining the coherence and cohesion created by the ninth grade students? in their narrative writings, and the problems encountered by the students. The subject of this study was the ninth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Gianyar in academic year 2011/2012. The obtained data were in the form of: a) scripts of students narrative writings, b), responses to the students? questionnaire, and c) script of teacher? interview. The main instrument was the researcher himself. The data were analyzed by using the theory introduced by Halliday and Hasan (1976), Alterberg (1987), Wuang, Hui and Sui, Danni, (2010), and Connor (1990) and Connor and John (1990). The findings of the study showed the cohesion of the narratives was achieved by the used of cohesive devices. Grammatical devices included references, substitution, ellipsis and conjunction. And lexical devices included reiteration and collocation. The coherence of the narratives was also achieved through the development of themes, the generic structure, and the tenses used. Most of the students have created cohesive and coherent narratives although some problems identified. They were in sentence patterns, verb patterns or forms, conjunction, spelling, word choice, plural form, over generalization, the use of article, ellipsis, and the use preposition, the use of pronoun, apostrophe, adverb forms, syllabification, and capital letters.

Abstract

This research aimed at investigating the effect of RAFT strategy and anxiety upon writing competency. It was an experimental research with 2x2 factorial design. The result showed that (a) there was significant difference in writing competency between the students taught by RAFT strategy and those taught by conventional strategy,b) there was an interactional effect between the implementation of RAFT strategy and the students? anxiety, (c) there was significant different in the writing competency between the students? with high anxiety, taught by RAFT strategy and those who are taught by conventional technique, (d) there was significant different in the writing competency between the students? with low anxiety, taught by implementing RAFT strategy and those who are taught by conventional strategykeyword : anxiety, RAFT strategy, writing competency.

Abstract

Abstract This study is aimed at determining the communication strategies used by Nyentana couples in Tabanan regency. The study was designed in the form of qualitative research in which all research results were analyzed descriptively. Participant observation and interview were used as the methods to obtain data in this study, while the observation sheets and interview blueprint were used as the instruments. Four Nyentana couples in Tabanan regency were selected as the subjects of this study by using purposive sampling technique. It was found that the couples used several kinds of communication strategy, such as (1) imperative form of speech, (2) the forms of the question, and (3)  silence. It was also found that wives in marriage Nyentana expressed indirect utterances and did silence as communication strategy more often than their husbands. While the discussion of the consequences that occured due to communication strategies expressed or done by each participant is that obedience and rejection are the reciprocal effect of Imperative speeches, whereas rejection and anger occured as the reciprocal effect of the silence. As for the questions that have hidden motives behind them; obedience, agreement and rejection happened in return. Key words: nyentana marriage system, communication strategies, matrilineal marriage.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan instrumen self assessment untuk meningkatkan kompetensi menulis siswa sekolah menengah pertama kelas 8 di Denpasar . Penelitian dan Pengembangan digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Analisis kebutuhan dilakukan di tiga sekolah yang berbeda di Denpasar untuk mendapatkan kebutuhan yang diperlukan oleh guru. Terdapat dua metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini yaitu kuesioner dan wawancara . Hasil wawancara dan kuesioner kemudian dianalisis untuk mengetahui jenis self-assessment yang dibutuhkan . Berdasarkan analisis kebutuhan , ditemukan bahwa guru memerlukan self -assessment yang berfokus pada pengembangan siswa . Hasil analisis kebutuhan kemudian digunakan sebagai data untuk mengembangkan instrumen. Penelitian ini menggunakan model ADDIE dalam mengembangkan instrumen yang merupakan pendekatan sistematis untuk proses desain pembelajaran terdiri dari langkah-langkah model meliputi Analisis , Desain , Pengembangan , Implementasi , dan Evaluasi . Selanjutnya, untuk mengetahui kualitas instrumen, self-assessment prototipe dinilai oleh expert judges dan guru . Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa kualitas instrumen yang dikembangkan adalah baik berdasarkan hasil jugdments ahli dan guru . Dengan demikian, alat penilaian berbentuk self-assessment direkomendasikan untuk digunakan karena akan memberikan kontribusi yang berarti bagi pengembangan keterampilan menulis di sekolah-sekolah SMP di Denpasar .Kata Kunci : kompetensi menulis, penilaian diri, This study aimed at developing self-assessment instrument to improve the writing competency of grade 8 junior high schools students in Denpasar. Research and Development was employed for this study. The need analysis was conducted in three different schools in Denpasar resulting the needs required by the teachers. There were two methods used in this study namely questionnaire and interview. The result of the interview and the questionnaire were analyzed in order to know the kind of self assessment needed. Based on the need analysis, it was found that the teachers needed self assessment which focuses on the development of students. The result of the need analysis then used as a data to develop the instrument. This study used ADDIE model in developing the instrument which is a systematic approach to the instructional design process consist of for the steps of the model includes Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. Furthermore, in order to find out the quality of developed self- assessment instrument the prototype were measured by judges and teachers. The finding shows that the quality of the developed instrument was good based on the result of the expert judgments and user judgement. Thus, the self assessment instrument is recommended to be used as it will result a meaningful contribution to the development of writing skills in junior high schools in Denpasar.keyword : self-assessment, writing competency

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aimed at developing good reading comprehension materials for reading I course in English Education Departement of FKIP Mahasaraswati University Denpasar. It was developed by using the Research and Development proposed by Sugiyono (2010). The content of the product was based on Competency Standard and Basic Competency mentioned in the syllabus. The reading materials which have been provided for the first semester of reading I course in the English Education Department of FKIP Mahasaraswati University Denpasar based on the criteria of a good reading material, involved the reading comprehension materials for reading I course that are relevant to convey the topic of (1) Grief and Escape, (2) Speech Production, (3) Career Women, (4) Visiting Bali, (5) ?Ada Apa dengan Cinta??, and (6) How to make Ice Cream. The reading comprehension materials, which should be developed, involved the skill of (1) understanding text organization, (2) inferring, (3) evaluating the text, (4) predicting, (5) understanding the writer?s style, and (6) dealing with unfamiliar words. The reading materials were corrected by the expert judges and field tested. The product, which was in the form of reading materials, was tried out twice. Firstly, it was tried out to the forty two students of the first grade students and one lecturer in the English Education Department of FKIP Mahasaraswati University Denpasar. The result of the analysis showed that there were some invalid items. Then, the product was revised. Secondly, it was tried out in the class I B and ten lecturers in the English Education Department of FKIP Mahasaraswati University Denpasar. The results of the analysis showed that all of the items were valid. The product did not need to be revised again. Therefore, it could be used for reading I course for the first grade students in the English Education Department of FKIP Mahasaraswati University Denpasar.   Keywords: materials and reading comprehension

Abstract

Tujuan utama penelitian ini adalah untuk mengembangkan instrumen penilaian diri untuk kemampuan berbicara Bahasa Inggris siswa kelas VIII SMP. Secara spesifik focus penelitian ini; 1) mengetahui instrumen penilaian diri yang ingin dikembangkan; 2) mengembangkan prototipe instrumen penilaian diri; dan 3) menguji kualitas instrumen penilaian diri yang dikembangkan. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode R&D model Gall, Gall & Borg (2003). Subyek penelitian ini adalah 11 guru bahasa Inggris dan silabus untuk siswa kelas delapan SMP. Data diperoleh dengan menggunakan kuesioner, wawancara, observasi, dan silabus analisis. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa ada dua bentuk instrumen penilaian diri yang perlu dikembangkan, yaitu aspek bahasa dan aspek non bahasa. Prototipe instrumen penilaian diri dikembangkan dengan mempertimbangkan analisis kebutuhan dan grand teori. Instrumen penilaian diri divalidasi dan direvisi oleh dua expert judges dan user judges. Berdasarkan validasi dari expert dan user judges, kualitas instrumen penilaian diri yang dikembangkan dikategorikan sebagai instrumen yang sangat baik dengan validasi yang sangat tinggi.Kata Kunci : instrumen evaluasi diri, kompetensi berbicara The main purpose of this study was to develop self assessment instruments for speaking competency of the eighth grade students of junior high school. The focus of this study was specifically on; 1) finding out the types of self-assessment needed to be developed; 2) developing the prototype of self assessment instruments; and 3) examining the quality of the developed self-assessment instruments. This study used R&D method of Gall, Gall & Borg (2003) design model. The subjects of this study were eleven English teachers and syllabus for the eighth grade students of junior high school. The data were obtained through questionnaire, interview, observation and syllabus analysis. The results revealed that there were two form of self-assessment instruments needed to be developed, namely linguistic aspect and non-linguistic aspect self assessment. The prototype of self assessment instruments were developed by considering the need analysis results and grand theory. The instruments were validated and revised by two expert judges and user judges. Based on the validation from expert judges and user judges, the quality of the developed self assessment instruments was categorized as excellent instruments with very high validity.keyword : self assessment instruments, speaking competency

Abstract

Abstract This study aims at investigating the effect of desuggestopedia on writing competence of the second semester students with different temperaments, of FKIP UNMAS Denpasar. The problems of this study were formulated into two major points: 1) the effect of desuggestopedia on students? writing competence, 2) interaction between desuggestopedia and the temperament. This study was designed with experimental research and instruments being used were lesson plans, posttest, writing rubric, and questionnaire. It used intact random sampling which is one type of probability sampling technique. As a result, two classes from seven classes were chosen, one as the experimental group and the other as the control group. The research instruments used to obtain the data in this research were in the form of tests which were analyzed using descriptive analysis and Statistical Two-Way ANOVA. There were 2 findings in this research: 1) there was significant different effect on students? writing competence between the students who were taught by using Desuggestopedia and those who were taught by conventional technique, 2) there was not significant interaction effect between desuggestopedia and students? temperament on students? writing competence. Abstract

This study investigated the phenomena of code-mixing in the language used in social media. This study aimed at describing (1) the kinds of code-mixing produced by online sellers; (2) the online sellers' response towards the use of code-mixing. The data collected through online sellers' comments, captions, status and, hashtags on Facebook. The data were analysed based on the linguistic form of code-mixing by Suwito?s theory and the reasons for the use of code-mixing by Holmes Hoffman's theory. There were five steps in collecting the data, namely (1) opens the Facebook page; (2) screenshots code-mixing sentences; (3) writes code-mixing in the form of a table; (4) reads code-mixing sentences; (5) interviews the online sellers. The result showed that there were 50 code-mixing produced by online sellers. The online sellers frequently produced code-mixing in the form of words as a noun, phrase, adjective, clause, hybrid, repetition word and idiom. Meanwhile, the result of the interview showed that online sellers use code-mixing to get people?s attention, limited words or unknown translation.
