Abstract

Research studying efficacy of Steinernema carpocapsae entomopathogenic nematode local isolate against army worm (Spodoptera litura F.) was conducted in the Laboratory of Plant Nematology, the Departement of Plant Pests and Deseases, Agriculture Faculty, Jenderal Soedirman University, Purwokerto. Both the efficacy test of S. carpocapsae against S. litura and the effect test of S. carpocapsae on S. litura development were designed by Split Plot Design based on Randomized Complete Block Design. Treatments tested were the origin of isolates, i.e., Cilacap and Brebes, and several invective juvenile nematode concentrations. Variables observed were larval mortality and numbers of pupae, adults, eggs, and hatched eggs. Results of the reserach showed that both local entomopathogenic nematode had low efficacy on S. litura, i.e., larval mortality for Cilacap and Brebes isolates of 25.5 and 28.2%, respectively. LC50 of Cilacap and Brebes isolates was 1,695.36 and 1,908.31 nematode ml . The local isolate nematodes could not inhibit S. litura development.

Abstract

This research aimed at knowing 1) phenolic compound contents in the liquid, 2) kinds of tree dust as raw material of the liquid potentially, and 3) the liquid concentration effectively inhibiting growth of Fusarium oxysporum and Meloidogyne spp. in the laboratory. Both in vitro test of the liquid on F. oxysporum and the liquid test potentially on Meloidogyne spp. were designed by Randomized Block Design arranged with factorial. The first factor from the in vitro test was saw dust of albasia, waru, johar, or coconut trees and the second one was the liquid concentration, i.e., 0, 1, 2, or 3 percent. From the second test, the first factor was the same material and the second one was the concentration. Result of the research showed that 1) the liquid from waste of johar tree contained the highest phenol as 4,273.05 ppm, 2) the liquid from waste of albasia, waru, johar, and coconut trees potentially controlled the nematode in the laboratory with mortality up to 50%, while the most potential in inhibiting F. xysporum was the liquid from coconut tree, 3) concentration of was the best concentration in inhibiting F. oxysporum with the highest growth inhibition of colony diameter and dry weight was 90.23 and 90.04%, respectively, while concentration of 4% was the best concentration in resulting nematode mortality at the laboratory as 83.799%.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to study the effect of application frequencies and oncentrations of foliar fertilizer on yield of mango. The research was conducted in mango orchard belong to UPTD Balai Pengembangan Benih Hortikultura dan Aneka Tanaman (BPBHAT) Instalasi Kasugengan, Cirebon Regency from July to November 2007. This research used Completely Randomized Design with three replicates. Factors tested were the application of foliar fertilizer, i.e., one, two, and three times; and concentrations of the fertilizer, i.e., 0, 0.1, and 0.2%. Each unit of experiment consisted of one tree; each tree was taken 20 panicles as sample. Result of the research showed that the application of 3 times gave the highest number and weight of harvested fruit per tree. Concentration of the 0.2% fertilizer gave the highest yield of mango. There was no interaction effect of the application and concentration on all observed variables.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to seek raw materials for preparing liquid smoke, and then evaluated in laboratory for knowing its effects on feeding, development and mortality of the cabbage head caterpillar, Crocidolomia pavonana (F.) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) on cabbage. Antifeedant activity of the liquid was tested against third-instar of the caterpillar larvae with leaf residual method in leaf disc no-choice tests and contact method. Result of the research showed that the liquid at concentration from 3 - 22% reduced feeding by 22.94 - 51.52%, and prolonged period of the caterpillar development to pupation by 0.27 - 0.33 days compared to controls. The effects of test liquid smoke on mortality of Crocidolomia pavonana third-and fourth (final)-instar larvae were fed for 48 h broccoli leaves treated with a leaf residual and dipping method. The result show that the treatment 3 - 22% liquid smoke was not caused larvae death. The effects of liquid smoke from coconut shell (a raw material of the chosen few) was to take possession of antifeedant activity from weak to moderate against C. pavonana larvae.The effects of antifeedant from weak to moderate were the liquid at concentration from 3 - 22%. All the above effects could not give substantial suppression of C. pavonana population if the liquid was used in the field.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to evaluate phenotypic performance and genetic parameter of yield character, yield components, and growth of composite maize in Gorontalo. Fourteen maize genotypes from Balitser and two comparer varieties were sown for evaluation from August 2007 up to November 2007 using a randomized block design with three replication. Result of the research indicated that seven genotypes gave higher yield than Sukmaragaocal (comparer-2), namely, MSK 2 (RSS) C5, MS - 1, MS 3, BK (HS) C2, MSJ 2 (RRS) C5, MSJ 1 (RRS) C6, and SATP - 1 (S2) C7. No genotypes produced lower yield than Lamuru (comparer-1). Two genotypes showed higher yield of 7 t ha , namely, MS - 1 (7.01 t ha) and MSJ 1 (RRS) C6 (7.33 t ha ). Values of coefficient of variance from all characters were lower except for downy mildew percentage. High heritability estimate was observed for 50% male and female flowering and downy mildew percentage while for other characters were medium category, except for ASI (Anthesis-silking interval). Ear placement and weight of 1,000 grain had significant and positive correlation with yield, while downy mildew percentages had negative correlation with yield.

Abstract

The objectives were to find out group dynamics and the farmers response and to analyze their relationship on innovation adoption of snake fruit Pondoh cultivation, partially and simultaneously. A case study was used in the research. Kelompok Tani Mekar Jaya II in Ciakar Village, Cibeureum District and Kelompok Tani Sinarjaya in Urug Village, Kawalu District, Tasikmalaya City was purposively chosen. All members (40 farmers of each group) were chosen as respondents. The primary data on the dynamics and the response were analyzed descriptively and the relationship was analyzed using non-parametric statistics test. The hypothesis test was simultaneously done by the W Kendall’s test and partially by the Rank Spearman’s correlation test. The research results showed that the dynamics and the response was categorized high; simultaneously there was relationship between the dynamics and the adoption or the more dynamic the group the higher the adoption would be. Partially, it was shown that: a) there was relationship between the groups objective, task structure, solidness, and the response to the adoption b) there was no relationship between the group assistance, pressure, effectiveness, and the response to the adoption; c) there was no relationship between the group structure and the response to the adoption of either in the Mekar Jaya II or the Sinarjaya; d) there was relationship between the group atmosphere and the response to the adoption of the Mekar Jaya II farmer’s, on the contrary, there was no relationship between the structure and the response to the adoption of the Sinarjaya.

Abstract

Many papers have reported that Fe deficiency caused anemia is a worldwide problem. It has also been reported that most of the Fe intake of people came from cereals. To improve Fe nutrition of rice consumers, grain Fe concentration must not only be increased, but it must also be in a form that available to consumers of rice. This study set out to determine the bioavailability of Fe in rice of 10 varieties. Results indicated that bioavailability of rice grain Fe varied among different varieties. Three varieties (Maligaya Sp., Bengawan Solo, and Gilirang) had a higher Fe bioavailability than the standard of IR 64. There was no correlation between bioavailability of Fe and grain Fe concentration in rice grain.

Abstract

The aims of this research were to determine the effect of organic ash and antagonistic fungi on controlling tomato Fusarium wilt. Factorial Completely Randomized Design has been used in hisresearch. There were paddy husk and legume ash as organic ash factor, and T. harzianum and Gvirensasantagonistic fungi factor. The result showed that combination of antagonistic fungi (Tharzianum and G. virens) and organic ash (paddy husk and legume ash) could suppress the disease growth, incubation period, disease severity, and disease rate. The effectiveness of the combination were about 36.79-43.30%.
