Abstract

People believe committing suicide is caused by an individual’s mental disorder. Therefore, suicide is identified as the individual's responsibility. However, in the theory of suicide by Emile Durkheim, he offers a different perspective on committing suicide. Durkheim argues society has influenced the individual's life by committing suicide. According to the phenomena, this study aims to identify the social factors that influence Nora to suicide in the novel The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. The study uses a descriptive analysis method and applies the theory of suicide by Emile Durkheim. The researcher identifies two factors that influenced Nora to suicide, namely egoistic and fatalistic. The people around Nora (family, friends, and partner) do not have a good relationship with her. On the other hand, the standardization or ideology of society put more and more pressure on Nora’s life. These two social factors influence Nora to decide to end her life.

Abstract

Intermediality is a commonplace in the literary world, however it has not been widely found in the form of audio podcasts. The use of podcasts as a new medium for distributing audio plays can be an attractive option considering that youth as the target audience are currently very fond of podcasts. The Sandiwara Sastra podcast is interesting to study because it used a popular literary works that already have numerous readers, but it is not easy to make plays in an audio format that are liked by youth who are more familiar with visual literature. The purpose of this study is to determine the youth’s reception of intermediality on the Sandiwara Sastra podcast and to find out the role of the interpretive community in the production of meaning. With Irina O Rajewsky's intermediality framework and Alasuutari's third generation audience reception analysis framework. The results show that the intermediality of the Sandiwara Sastra podcast can provide a new experience for youth as the audience in enjoying literature. The audio component makes the audience feel closer to the literary story because audio can create a theater of mind. Audio can also evoke memories and bring back nostalgia when the audience listens to them. The use of the Sandiwara Sastra podcast also gives the audience a choice regarding the mode of listening to the podcast, even though the audience is not focused on enjoying literature.

Abstract

The release of Oli London's Plastic Is Fantastic (2021), which talks about his fantasy of plastic surgery, has been extensively criticized. One of the reasons is that his music video was released during Pride Month, a month when the LGBTQ community advocates for their rights for gender equality, followed by other videos and tweets declaring his post-surgery transition to "non-binary" and “Korean.” To dig deeper into this assertion, this study combines Fairclough's (2003) three-dimensional theory as the framework and Machin's (2010) semiotic analysis to examine the song lyrics, visuals, and sociocultural background, thereby contributing to the Multimodal Discourse Analysis studies. This study intends to investigate the construction of gender and identity in Plastic Is Fantastic, the underlying power systems present, and how the power systems subvert gender and Korean identity. Research shows that the lyrics and visuals are connected with Korean identity due to the usage of Korean in the songs and the performer's androgynous appearance and behavior throughout the video. These practices produced problems, especially when his plastic surgery-related social media activity was stirred up by mass media as he consistently equated and exploited his trans status with other minority groups, such as Koreans, LGBTQ, and transracial people. Thus, the subversion of gender and identity is present since identity production is commodified.

Abstract

The development of technology has enabled the democratization of technology that helps minority groups to disseminate their own discourse outside the control of the dominant media. Through an analysis on a series of popular Twitter tweets made as responses towards the announcement of a Disney animated film Raya and the Last Dragon, this article explores how internet users who identify themselves as Southeast Asian respond to the representations of Southeast Asia produced by a multinational company. Using critical discourse analysis from van Dijk and representation theory, this article examines how popular tweets constructed a discourse on Southeast Asian representation by using their authority as 'Southeast Asian' to construct alternative representations in response to the representations created by popular media and how these reached other internet users. The results of the analysis show that while the representation discourse on the tweets was well received by internet users who identify themselves as 'Southeast Asian', some aspects used to construct the 'Southeast Asian' identity were disapproved of by some users who refused to associate themselves with the identity.

Abstract

Bvrtan is a quite unique Indonesian black metal band. Combining humor with the black metal’s dark aesthetic, Bvrtan’s works have been well appreciated by the Indonesian underground scene. In contrast to other black metal practices that shout anti-religion and absolute freedom messages, Bvrtan’s works are identical with social criticism of Indonesian agrarian context. Thus, this study exists to discuss one of Bvrtan’s work entitled Perstavan Rakyat Svkatani. By applying theoretical approach of Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis, the researcher uncovers how Bvrtan’s work is composed of various type of texts, ranging from linguistic, the discursive practice and social contexts. By the theoretical view, the researcher finally found that this work specifically relate to a wider context of Indonesian agrarian problem that involves the pseudo-welfare of farmers. With satirical lyrics and angry expletives, the phrase of “sejahtera matamv” is the pivotal key to understand every dimension of discourse within this work.

The data were collected from 24 October 2022 to 9 November 2022. The research data were in forms of words, phrases, and sentences contained in the captions used by @greenpeaceid. The results show that in representing the social actors involved in the discourse regarding environmental issues, the @greenpeaceid used the strategy of differentiation, objectivation, indetermination, nominations, and association. The presence of actors/events in discourse is considered to be able to clearly describe the involvement of related social actors in their campaigns to overcome the climate crisis. Therefore, the intended goals and information can be conveyed to the readers. Furthermore, the analysis shows that the @greenpeaceid account shows the ideological stance of pro-government which they consider as partners in efforts to overcome the climate crisis.

Abstract

This study examines the poem "Bunga Gugur" by W. S. Rendra which is part of a collection of poetic expressions for Dik Narti using a semiotic model. This scientific work aims to describe the results of a study of one of W.S. Rendra’s love poems during his lifetime. The study of this semiotic model is divided into three stages including analysis of syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic aspects. A qualitative descriptive method was used in this study to describe the meaning of poetry so that readers can understand it as a unique literary work, having a sign system, message and meaning. The data source used is the primary data source in the form of the poem "Bunga Gugur". The secondary data sources are in the form of books and articles on literary studies, poetry, and semiotics. The results of the study found that the poem "Bunga Gugur" has conventional typography, which interprets the life of a loved one who has left this natural world. With the aim of expressing the author's heart to himself, so that the reader feels what the author feels.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the causes of sexual violence and conduct a critical examination of the traumatic impact of sexual violence as portrayed in Amadu's novel "No Past No Present No Future" and Mda's novel "The Madonna of Excelsior" by incorporating the theories of trauma by Freud, Van der Kolk, and Greenberg as the basis for the analysis. The results of this study reveal that betrayal and negative heterosexual encounters are the causes of trauma and, ultimately, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in Amadu’s novel. Based on these findings, using literary texts that specifically focus on the consequences of sexual violence to educate the public about victims' reactions to rape is highly recommended. This research also suggests that psychology researchers are expected to be able to use the implications of this study to explore further the role of literature in reducing violence, including rape, and creating healthy community life.
