Abstract

Potential maritime Indonesia related health science has not been widely explored. Studies in Indonesia about the potential of marine resources to improve health are still very little. This article summarized a reports from magazines and journals in foreign countries about the potential fish consumption lowers the risk of heart attack. Allegedly this potential is related to the content of unsaturated fatty acids omega-3 (n-3) on fish. The report of observations, clinical , animal and in vitro studies have demonstrated the benefits of omega-3 prevent and treat cardiovascular disease. Although the mechanism is not clear, but it has been shown that the cardioprotection effect of n-3 fatty acids may be caused by its role influencing biological effects on lipid and lipoprotein metabolism, platelet function, arterial cholesterol distribution, vascular function and inflammatory response

Abstract

Median Rhomboid Glossitis (MRG) is papilla atrophy in the middle portion of the tongue which occurs in 0.01% - 0.1% of the population. Median Rhomboid Glossitis is believed to be a disorder of the development of tongue formation that occurs in the middle of the dorsum surface of the tongue at the 2/3 anterior linkage with 1/3 posterior tongue. The depapillated area is a persistent impregnated tubercle and cannot fully integrate with the lateral lingual in the development of the tongue. Research shows various predisposing factors associated with MRG such as wearing dentures, smoking, diabetes mellitus, and Candida fungal infections. The purpose of this paper was to report the management of MRG cases in elderly patients. 57-year-old male patient came to the Oral Medicine Department RSGM UNEJ with complaints of painful tongue, intraoral clinical features in the dorsum of the tongue found atrophy of papillae, rhomboid, erythema, round shape with a diameter of ± 2 cm. The patient's final diagnosis is Median Rhomboid Glossitis with involvement of Candida infection which is established from subjective, objective examination and mycological investigations. Therapy in such cases is to provide topical nystatin antifungal drugs and multivitamins with B complex and zinc content. MRG patients with Candida infection involvement give positive results in topical nystatin antifungal therapy.

Abstract

Gingival enlargement is a kind of oral manifestation, that can caused by induction of anticonvulsant drugs. Phenytoin is one of anticonvulsant drug that can caused gingival enlargement. Gingival enlargement in this case developed until grade III. The patient was highly phenytoin dependent and can’t be reconciled. The aim of this paper is to find out the cause of phenytoin induced gingival enlargement and its treatment. A 20 years old woman came to RSGM UNSOED to check her swollen gums. The patient’s history was epilepsy and had been regularly taking phenytoin. The patient was taking 30 mg phenobarbital, 10 mg clobazam, 1 mg folic acid and 100 mg phenytoin 2 times a day with 2 capsules each time that had been consumted for 4 years. Phenytoin as anticonvulsant drug has side effects that can caused gingival enlargement, this is because phenytoin can increase extracellular connective tissue, collagen and fibrous.

Abstract

Oral Candidiasis is infectious that caused by fungi Candida albican. Candida infection can happen on Diabetes mellitus patients (DM) because of glucose high level on oral cavity fluid and decreasing immunity patient. The purpose was to discuss and management acute erythematous candidiasis on DM patient. A 63-year-old male patient arrives at the Dental Hospital with dorsal pain, heat and pain when eating and drinking. Pain has been felt since about 2 months ago after the patient experienced heart disease. The patient has a history of controlled diabetes mellitus, controlled hypertension, asthma and gastritis. The patient feels pain in his tongue getting worse accompanied by a burning sensation and pain when the body was unhealthy. The patient was diagnosed with acute erythematous candidiasis and treated with systemic antifungal, mouthwash and topical antiseptic for oral cavity cases and was referred to an internal medicine specialist for blood sugar control. The patient was declared cured after 36 days of treatment. Knowing the predisposing factors in this case (DM) is very important in the management of erythematous acute candidiasis therapy. Patients with diabetes mellitus must routinely control blood glucose levels, maintain oral hygiene and not worsen by adding other predisposing factors.
