Abstract

Fishing is one of the most challenging activities in the world. It is about 80% of ship accidents due to human error. The availability and proper use of safety equipment can minimize the risk. This study aims to identify the suitability of safety equipment used on Slerek boat in PPN Pengambengan, Bali in accordance with international and national standards, and describes the role of relevant institutions to increase the fishermen safety. In this study, we used a survey method, in which focussed on three main aspects including  the types of safety equipment, numbers of safety equipment, and the suitability of equipment which must be taken. The lack of equipment and awareness about safety, and do not comply with the national standards for boat less than 24 meters length will directly affect the fishermen safety. The lack of regulations on the small boat safety showed that the fishermen safety in fishing activities in Indonesia have not been considered and there is no clear policy from local and central government.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to characterize potential fishing ground for the skipjack tuna using the oceanographic conditions of sea surface temperature and chlorophyll-a concentrations and catch data, and to describe the level of primary productivity around the skipjack fishing grounds in the Bone Bay. This study used a survey method by collecting primary tuna catch and MODIS satellite image data. The data were analyzed using Empirical Cumulative Distribution Function (ECDF). The model outputs were visualized using ArcGIS spatial analyst.  The results showed that the potential skipjack tuna fishing grounds during the west monsoon ( December -February ) were well characterized  by  the environmental conditions of SST and chlorophyll- a concentration ranged from 29.9 to 31.0 °C and from 0.12 to 0.22 mg m3, respectively. The highest catches for skipjack were found in February in the specific areas of 120°E-121°E and 3°S-4°S where the levels of primary production ranged from 5.30 to 11.62 g C/m2/ month during the west monsoon.

Abstract

The availability of fish in the fishing area is influenced by oceanography condition. In Makassar coastal waters, potential area of small pelagic fish is the main information for the fisherman. Purpose of this research is to provide information of oceanographic characteristics which connected with fishing potential area on east season. This research was conducted during May-December 2012, using field and secondary data. Potential area determination was analyzed by using polynomial model. Distribution of oceanographic factors was analyzed by SMS and surfer. Makassar has continent as well as island areas (12 islands). Oceanographic conditions indicate tidal current velocity of 0.08 m/s and ebb currents from 0.05 to 0.30 m/s. Sea surface temperatures in the spring waters east of Makassar were in the range of 26 - 31oC. The concentration of chlorophyll-a occurred between 0.0 and 1.0 mg/m3, oceanographic conditions in July and August 2012 are relatively similar. Potential zone for small pelagic fish species in June, July, and August are in the waters around the islands - northern part of the island of Makassar and from the island to Lanyukkang Lumu-Lumu island.

Abstract

The distribution of anchovies (Stelophorus spp) in the Spermonde coastal waters, Pangkep, was studied from satellite remotely sensed environment and catch data, using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Generalized Additive Model (GAM). The goal of this preliminary study was to investigate the relationship between sea surface temperature (SST) and sea surface chlorophyll-a concentration (SSC), and anchovies distribution. To describe their relationship, SST and SSC derived from Aqua/MODIS satellite were overlain with the positions of experimental fishing by local fishermen’s lift net (“Bagan perahu”). The experimental lift net operations were conducted in April to May 2008. The findings of this study showed that most of the anchovies distribution occurred in the coastal area. Anchovies distribution tended to be highest in the specific temperature of 28.8 - 29.3oC and chlorophyll-a of 1.5 ‒2.5 mg.m-3. Furthermore, the SST and SSC in the coastal waters of Spermonde play a great role in determining the variability of the anchovies quantitative distribution in the study area. The results were supported by GAM prediction.  Due to lack of robust data, there is no detailed information on the optimum habitat preference of anchovies. Future work is needed to reveal the preferred habitat of anchovies with the consideration of more oceanographic parameters.

Abstract

This research aims to study the variety of fishing boats based on several technical aspects. This research was carried out from September of 2013 through January of 2014.  This study collected the sampling data (boats at docking condition) in approximately 10 % of existing population along south coast from Takalar regency. The data were analyzed using cluster and PCA (Principal Componen Analysis) to assess the categorization of the boats based on the main dimension size and the mark of the main dimension ratio. The results showed that there are five groups of categorization which have different characteristics on its group. The group I was the boat which has high width and length (L/B), the group II was the boat which has high height and length ratio (L/D), the group III was the boat which has low height and length percentage (L/D), the group IV the boat which had high length, width, height, and the high water loaded (L, BOA, D, and d), and the group V was the boat which had high width and height ratio (B/D).

Abstract

The main problem facing by fishermen for capturing skipjack tuna is limited information of potential skipjack fishing areas such as the frontal locations. The purpose of this study was to analyze the spatial and temporal skipjack tuna distributions and thermal fronts, and to determine the effect of climate change on their distribution and abundance during transitional seasons. We used a survey method, in which catch and fishing position data were collected by following pole and line fishing operations. This study also collected secondary data that consisted of sea surface temperatures (SSTs) and chlorophyll-a derived from Aqua / MODIS. Fronts were determined by calculating SST gradient, SSTs preferences, chlorophyll-a, bathymetry and distance from coastline, whereas SST anomaly was calculated from the difference between monthly SST and mean SST. We mapped satellite and field data using ArcGIS 10.0.  The results showed that the highest catch of skipjack tuna with an average of 205 fish/set were found in October 2013, which occurred in the areas of 4o40S-5o10S and 120o40E-121oE. The locations had a temperature gradient of 0.4oC and chlorophyll-a density from 0,15 to 0,23 mg m-3. Potential fishing areas may associate with negative SST anomalies of -2.1373 - -0.6469oC, reflecting that skipjack tuna tend to be at thermal fronts with relatively lower SST compared with an average of seven years.

Abstract

A good stability of a fishing vessel determines the safety and the success of fishing operation. One of the critical factors affecting the quality of fishing boat’s stability is the on board loads arrangement. However, it is generally ignored by traditional fishermen, such as fishermen of payang boat. This condition may increase the possibility of capsizing as a result of less stability. A payang fishing boat should have a good stability. It is because while conducting fishing operation, this fishing boat should be capable of quick manoeuvering. This research aimed to analyse the stability of the boat in an existing loads arrangement and determine the arrangement for the better stability.  This research was conducted in two phases. The first phase was conducting a survey which to capture existing condition. The second one was developing a simulation of loads arrangement to gain the better parameter of stability. The results showed that the typical loads arrangement applying by traditional fishermen (existing condition) resulted on poor stability. Better stability was produced by placing more cargos under deck and avoiding overload on the deck.

Abstract

The research was aimed at determining the effect of fishing techniques, handling facilities and methods on the quality of the catch. The research employed four types of fishing gears, i.e. purse seine, cantrang, gillnet and boat-liftnet with five replicates each. Five species of the dominant catch were taken for quality determination on-board, at landing sites, and after auctioning. The condition of handling facilities and methods were evaluated. Fish transit time (time lapse between the fish lifting and auction process) was also determined. Results indicated that the fish quality decreased as the transit time increased. Nearly all fish caught were subjected to neither good handling nor low temperature despite the availability of good handling facilities. Nevertheles, the fish quality remained fairly good up to the point of soon after auctioning (pH’s<7 and organoleptic scores >7). When alone, none of the quality predictors affected the fish quality. However, when the fishing techniques were compounded the quality predictors significantly affected the fish quality. Regression analysis showed that, when the fishing techniques were uncompounded, 73.96% of the fish quality was determined by fishing with purse seine, cantrang, boat-liftnet and fish transit time. When fishing techniques were compounded, however, the fishing techniques, on-board handling methods, on-board and on landing site handling facilities, and the fish transit time contributed 73.96% effect to the fish quality. The PCA analysis showed that as much as 52.52% and 27.27% the fish quality were determined by the purse seine and cantrang, respectively.
