Abstract

Indonesia's fertility rate has continued to decline, it dropped to 2.87 at the end of the long term development plan period. Thisfertility rate is projected to go down by 40 percent in the period 1990-2020. However, the life expectancy will increase to 17 percent. This therefore, means that the decline of the totalfertility rate in Indonesia is faster than the rate of increase of the life expectancy rate.A vital transition in Indonesia will have an affect the number of the elderly people at least upto the year 2020. There will be 28.8 million elderly people or 11.3 percent of the nation's population. Hence, the structure and composition of Indonesia's population will be significantly changed. With the higher level of migration and increasing participation of females in the workforce, chances that an elderly person will have a child living close - by is being reduced, also and the availability of caregivers in thefamily house is also declining. There are few problems facing care for the aged in Indonesia such as: low priority, inadequate information on the elderly, poor facilities and infrastructure, lack of essential personnel, spiraling medical cost, changing epidemiological pattern of disease, lack of resources, inadequate family support, insufficient operations research. To improve on care for the elderly, the following need to be implemented: improved political commitment and the coverageof health service and or social services for the elderly, developing the relevant manpower to work with the elderly, identifying and mobilizingadequate resources to cover care for the aged.

Abstract

The expansion of cities is one of the most interesting issues, especially in the backdrop of increasing scarcity of space for the burgeoning population as well as environmental concerns, which among other things, advocate for the preservation of conservation areas on the city’s outskirts. The expansion of cities has resulted into the spatial, social, and cultural transformation of suburban areas. The importance of adopting spatial development pattern for areas on city fringes should foster the formulation of development that should take cognizance of the social and spatial aspects of such areas. Upon implementation, spatial development pattern will facilitate the proper phasing, and direction of the transformation process. Proper urban /city development and expansion should be conducted through five phases, which entail: 1) determining the goal, 2) creating the development and conservation pattern, 3) identifying the area of focus, 4) planning, 5) and implementation. If city development is based on the five phases aforementioned, it should evolve into a controllable expansion pattern, which is known as accretion expansion.

Abstract

This study focuses on the life of coastal communities, especially the lives of fishermen's wives in Sungai Raya, Kabupaten Bengkayang, Kalimantan Barat. It attempts to articulate how wives of the fisherfolk manage their time, the kind of work they perform and their contributions to the family income as their efforts to improve the quality of life. There are, however, variations in the patterns of their activities among those whose husbands are traditional independent fishermen and those whose husbands are wage labourers, but using relatively modern technology. The traditional independend fishermen perform more actively to supplement the family income compared to the other one. Working is considered as part of their lives. The side job they do is only to accomodate their spare time, but the money they have from it is not enough to fullfil the family economic.

Abstract

The 1990 Village Potential Census (PODES) aims at collecting data on village capabilities, land utilities, transportations, population and environment, and agricultural, economics, educational and health activities in order to investigate village development in Indonesia. Part of the existing data is utilized for compiling sume indicators on poor and non-poor villages. To obtain certain criteria on poverty, 27 variables have been selected for the rural-villages regions and 25 variables for urban villages which are assumed as being relevant of being poor. The criteria of poverty is based on the total score average, village total score, and deviation standard. The result of the analysis only show the location of poor villages, and not the existing number of poor population. The criteria about a poor village should be extremely carefully utilized since part of the selected variables is based on the reports of majority of the village population only, so that the benefit becomes very limited. Information about these poor villages is more suited for the parameters of poor village facilities and infrastuctures. Information about poor villages, according to PODES, has several basic weaknesses which can be improved with the support of the data of the 1993 Agricultural Census or the 1994 National Socioeconomyc Survey.

Abstract

This research, which was conducted in Palembang and Pangkalpinang in the province of Southern Sumatra, aim at identifying the factors which influence the level if income among permanent migrants in the informal sector. The results of the study indicate that the status of the residential house which is at the same time used as the place of work, has for long, bent over employment, recruitmentof the family labor force, and the level of education is a very dominant factor in the level of income. On the other hand, the variable of the number of workers and the source of capital does not have a dominating influence on the level of income of the migrant workers in the informal sector. Abbas Effendi in this paper argues that the number of workers and the working capital do not constitute major factors in improving on the production or the output, but instead, the factor of effectiveness and efficiency in using the factors of production are crucial in improving on their output.

Abstract

The role offamily inelderly care in Indonesia remainsfeasible solutionfor both economic andcultural reasons. Rapidsocio-economic changes have raised the concerns whetherfamily members can effectively meet the need ofelderly care. This study examines the relationship between household structure variables and the use of health services. We seek to learn the household structure characteristics that facilitate or constrain elderly care. If there is no constraint within the family, elderly people living dependently to their children will be less likely to show difference in health care practices as opposed to those living independently. The datafor this analysis is drawnfrom the 1993 Indonesian Socio-Economic Survey. Individuals aged 65 years or above reported to have illness complaints in the past two weeks and remained suffered when the survey was performed are included for the analysis. The finding sindicate that the elderly people living dependently with their children or with other families use less health care available outside their homes than those living independently.

Abstract

The relatively low negative impact of the Indonesian economic crisis on the province of Bali is due to the ability of the agriculture and tourist industry in the province to sustain this impact. The price of non food crop production such as cloves, coffee, cocoa, and cashew nuts is very high, and this is partially as a result of the stable peace and security enjoyed by the province. The high trend of foreign and national tourist to Bali which had declined drastically because of the demonstrations and chaos in some cities on the Java Island, has no once again picked up momentum. The prevailing peace and stability in the Island of Bali is utilised by the Indonesian Chinese have taken asylum in this province as their houses and property in the other provinces were burnt and destroyed in the previous upheavals. The exodus of Chinese to Bali during that crisis led to a Bali during that crisis led to a negative impact on the population, economic, and cultural sector of the province.
