Abstract

The expansion of cities is one of the most interesting issues, especially in the backdrop of increasing scarcity of space for the burgeoning population as well as environmental concerns, which among other things, advocate for the preservation of conservation areas on the city’s outskirts. The expansion of cities has resulted into the spatial, social, and cultural transformation of suburban areas. The importance of adopting spatial development pattern for areas on city fringes should foster the formulation of development that should take cognizance of the social and spatial aspects of such areas. Upon implementation, spatial development pattern will facilitate the proper phasing, and direction of the transformation process. Proper urban /city development and expansion should be conducted through five phases, which entail: 1) determining the goal, 2) creating the development and conservation pattern, 3) identifying the area of focus, 4) planning, 5) and implementation. If city development is based on the five phases aforementioned, it should evolve into a controllable expansion pattern, which is known as accretion expansion.

Abstract

The existence of residential buildings scattered across the archipelago that has been present for centuries and leaves a long footprint both culturally and socially and integrated into the lives of those who have it has a wealth of extraordinary values of local wisdom. This reality leads to the logical awareness of researchers and observers about the relationship of the concepts of culture and material culture that are not only to be studied and expressed textually but also important to be documented to add to the wealth of information and documentation of culture and architecture. assets that will ultimately contribute to its main mission of developing architectural science. Subroto (2008) states that basically science is used to explain the basic principles contained in knowledge that were previously known as important elements of science itself.

Abstract

The consistency of pangimaman, liwan, and pawestren in Masjid Pathok Negara Babadan, Bantul, Yogyakarta (1970-2019) Masjid Pathok Negara Babadan is one of four Pathok Negara Mosques which act as the eastern border of the state in the era of Sultanate of Yogyakarta. The Mosque has gone through many physical alterations especially within its current spaces. However, behind these alterations there are spaces whose existence have been consistent since the mosque was established until now. This raises questions such as what are the consistent spaces in Masjid Pathok Negara Babadan and what affects the consistency of those spaces. This study uses qualitative-descriptive method in order to collect data and informations about the development of floorplans and spaces in Masjid Pathok Negara Babadan. The analysis is conducted by using diachronic method and Cartesian Coordinat System (CCS). The findings of the study reveal that the existence of pangimaman, liwan, and pawestren are consistent space in Masjid Pathok Negara Babadan. This consistency is affected by the palace’s authority as the owner of sultanate’s mosques (kagungan dalem), including Masjid Pathok Negara Babadan itself. © 2020 Denny Huldiansyah, Tarcicius Yoyok Wahyu Subroto

Abstract

Abstract

This paper analyzes the process of changing living space in the Dayak tribes in Central Kalimantan, which is a complex phenomenon. The process of spatial discussion in Dayak settlements is useful in the planning and design process relating to housing and settlements, among others concerning environmental aspects, relocation, resettlement, urban renewal, and preserving local wisdom. This research is trying to develop the concept of change in living space that starts from a Dayak community value at the level of transition by using local material as a reference. The Dayak tribes in Central Kalimantan as the object of this study, specifically those in the large and small watersheds of Central Kalimantan as a reference, and field research as a research method. Asking research questions that arise is like asking whether the spatial discussion process is carried out on Dayak tribes in Central Kalimantan. The steps undertaken to answer the research questions are: first, finding the initial process of the Dayak concept of settling; second, to find the concept of changing space from non-permanent (nomadic) to semi-permanent (settled) and settlement. The results of this study contributed to the development of a revised architectural methamorphosis theory, such as questioning the settlement process of the evolving of Dayak tribes.

Abstract

Abstract

Javanese buildings can be understood both physically and non-physically, one of them is the Dalem Ageng Prabayeksa which is in the Dalem Mangkubumen complex. This building has the most important and sacred position in the complex with the uniqueness of the hip roof (limasan), which cannot be found in other hip roof buildings. This study focuses on optical illusions that occur on the roof of the building in front (south) and rear (north) views using explorative descriptive methods. Optical illusions that affect visual perception occur because of the imaginary perspective lines formed from the diagonals of the roof of the building so that an illusion is created that make the roof of the building look wider and taller than it should be. The roof of the building is also formed from proportions that are in accordance with the reference for the building as a house and the building as a place of worship (temples) which supports how optical illusions can occur so that a visual perspective and meaning behind the design of the roof appears which makes sense and is in line with the position of the Dalem Ageng Prabayeksa building as the most important and sacred building in the Dalem Mangkubumen complex.

Abstract

The fact that the Yogyakarta Palace is a centre and means of embodying cultural values that are still maintained and exist is proven through two aspects intangibles and tangibles. The distribution of local values reality, such as philosophy increasingly being threatened among the younger generation. From the physical revitalisation, we can understand the symbolic meaning of the Yogyakarta Palace through buildings because they contain complete symbolic meanings, especially in Witana Ward's floor elevation. What is the floor elevation shape with the steps? How is the relationship process between geometric shapes and symbolic meanings? What is the symbolic meaning of the floor elevation shape with steps? The research questions align with the urgency to formulate floor elevation shapes with the steps, formulate a relationship process between geometric shapes and symbolic meanings, and formulate the symbolic meaning of the floor elevation shape. The semiotic method with Peirce and Chandler's analytical model will be applied to study the floor elevation forms to uncover latent factors that are produced by truths under local knowledge. The result is a system consisting of three sign components, built from floor elevation shape with the steps objects that have a relationship with Vastu as context.

Abstract

Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Palace means realizing values based on local knowledge as a civilization indicator. Fact Yogyakarta palace, as the center of Javanese culture, is maintained and exists through intangible and tangible aspects. The reality of the distribution of local Javanese values, such as Javanese philosophy and way of life, is threatened among the younger generation. The physical revitalization of the Yogyakarta Palace on public crisis awareness of understanding philosophical meaning circulating. Understanding that Yogyakarta Palace's symbolic meaning can be learned through buildings, especially in the Witana ward, is vital. Witana has complete ornaments full of symbolic meaning by focusing on the floor as one of the architectural building's elements. What does the floor look like in Witana Ward? What is the process of the relationship between geometric shapes and meaning? What is the symbolic meaning of the Witana Ward floor pattern? Consider Witana's architectural symbol to invite all people to remember God Almighty. The research is urgent to formulate floor shapes in Witana Ward to formulate the relation between geometric shapes and meanings and formulate the symbolic meaning of floor patterns in Witana Ward, Yogyakarta Palace. The semiotic method with Peirce and Chandler's analytical model examines Ward Witana architectural forms, namely icons, indexes, and symbols, in a triadic system. The application of this method in the study of the elements of the Witana Ward floor pattern is to uncover latent factors to produce truths through local knowledge. The result is a system consisting of three sign components, built from floor pattern objects that have a relationship with Vastusastra as context.
