Abstract

Robotics is predicted to become the fastest growing market that could contribute to global socio-economic prosperity. The increasing unemployment rate and demand for 21st-century skills dictate the development of coding and robotic skills in STEAM fields. Schools are implementing the development of coding and robotics skills in curricula, but teachers are not effectively trained for teaching these skills. Therefore, the study employed a qualitative approach to detect how educators (n=22) of a higher education institution could be effectively trained in coding and robotics. The results showed that educators preferred working collaboratively in small groups, enjoyed the training activities, observed and understood the application of theory into practice, still required hard copy manuals, found robotic kit components too small to work on, were dependent on individual support during the training sessions, and required additional training sessions. Best practice in training coding and robotics is to ensure technical and pedagogical knowledge is connected and applied to real-life practices; divide trainees into basic and beginner classes, and sub-divide them in pairs where they can work collaboratively and interactively in completing their coding and robots; clarify the advantages and disadvantages of robotics in society; create fun activities during the training; and ensure sufficient support is available after training to assist those still not at ease with coding a robot.

Abstract

Modern information technology has brought great benefits to education and challenged teachers’ professional beliefs. This study collects data about Chinese college teachers’ professional beliefs with the methods of questionnaire surveys and individual interviews. Based on 682 valid questionnaires, the study finds that Chinese college teachers’ professional beliefs are positive in general. Their research capabilities and their sense of research achievements are lower than their teaching abilities and their sense of teaching achievements. In addition, they expect to improve their information technology capabilities eagerly. Given research findings, this study proposes strategies to reconstruct the teachers’ professional beliefs, such as offering training and further education opportunities for college teachers, improving their research capabilities, intensifying the reform of colleges to establish a classified evaluation system, and providing information technology training for college teachers.

Abstract

The study examined the Attitude of Social Studies Teachers towards the Utilization of Computers Classroom Instruction in Kogi State: The role of School location and gender was considered. A total of 280 schools out of 290 schools constitute the study. The study adopted a survey design to elicit information with a target population comprising 427 Social Studies teachers in Kogi State. Random sampling technique was used to select a sample size of 427(224 male and 203 female Social Studies teachers from secondary schools offering Social Studies) in Kogi state. Two research questions were raised and two null hypotheses was formulated and tested. The instrument for data collection was Teachers Computer Attitude and Utilization Scale (TCAUSQ) made up of 22 items and was validated. The reliability index of 0.78 was obtained. Mean and standard deviation was used to answer the research questions, while t-test was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The study revealed that Male Social Studies teachers have higher negative attitude towards the use of computer than their female counterparts. However, no significant difference was established between male and female Social Studies teachers on the use of computer. It was recommended among others that there should be periodic state government sponsored in-service training for teachers towards the use of computer as a tool for instruction in the teaching and learning of Social Studies, collaborative action and participation of government and non-governmental organization towards enhancing teacher’s attitude towards computer usage and all secondary schools Social Studies department in Nigeria, most especially in Kogi State should be furnished with computers, computer laboratories and sustainable electric power supply to enhance the use of computer as an instructional tool in Nigerian schools.

Abstract

Questionnaires are commonly utilized on educational research. However, studies on Differential Item Functioning (DIF) and calibration using Rasch Models are still limited. Therefore, a Self-regulated Learning questionnaire was developed which aims to determine the ability of students to regulate themselves to achieve learning goals. The instrument consists of twelve items. The involved participants were 300 students who enrolled in first-year to fourth-year. Data were analyzed using Racsh Model Analysis with Winsteps 4.5.2 software. As a result, there are four items that were not fit, so that, therefore should be eliminated or revised. The DIF analysis found that gender bias was unidentified, but long-study bias was detected for items number one and six. The reliability value of the item is categorized as very good (0.99), which indicates that the instrument has sufficient consistency/reliability. While, the function curve showed that the items on the self-regulated learning questionnaire produce optimal information in individuals with moderate (θ) ability. Overall, self-regulated learning questionnaires have to be revised then tested on different sample groups. In addition, longitudinal and cross-sectional research is necessary to determine the level of self-regulated learning of students more comprehensively.

Abstract

This study investigates lesson study research trends through bibliometric analysis on widely distributed Google Scholar (GS) and Scopus databases. We reviewed 997 papers from GS and 200 documents from the Scopus database searched using Harzing's Publish on May 6 2023. A descriptive study approach was used to investigate the data. The result of this study is that the number of lesson study documents has increased over the last decade (2012-2022). The most productive author based on GS  is R Huang from the United States, and the full author based on Scopus is E. Saito from Australia. While the prominent authors based on the highest citations are Fernandez Yoshida, based on GS, and Dudley, with the highest citations based on Scopus. The “International Journal for Lesson and Learning Studies” in the last decade is the most source of lesson study documents. Based on VosViewer visualization, Rosa is the author who has the most co-authorship papers and total link strength. The VosViewer displays four clusters related to lesson study: community, context, observation, and participation. Our strong recommendations regarding this study are lesson study research related to literacy, numeracy, and mathematical abilities. The results can assist relevant researchers in understanding trends in lesson study research and recommend guidelines for other studies.
