Abstract

Abstract: This classroom action research seeks to improve self-regulated learning (SRL) and understanding of research methodology at the graduate school. Nineteen graduate school students were involved. Using project-based learning (PjBL), students were assigned to create online blogs as the main project. The blog was intended for representing their understanding of research methodology by writing review of research articles and submitting a research proposal. The classroom action research was based on a model by Kemmis McTaggart and was conducted in two cycles. The data were analyzed using mixed methods in which the main data were analyzed qualitatively and further analysed quantitatively. The results of the study showed that after completing the course, students not only gained knowledge about research methods, but were also able to write a research proposal. In addition, the project-based learning could facilitate students to practice their communication skills while writing on their blog and to improve self-regulated learning. Abstract

Teachers’ diagnostic practice on students-difficulties is one of the important steps in designing and managing classroom lessons. The purpose of this study was to explore teachers’ perception and practices regarding diagnosing students’ learning difficulties. The participants of the study were 28 Indonesian mathematics teachers of Junior High School. The data was collected through a Focus Group Discussion and a teacher questionnaire. The data were analyzed qualitatively to describe how the teachers perceive learning difficulties and how the teachers diagnosed students’ learning difficulties. The results of the analysis reveal that the teachers do not yet perform an in-depth diagnosis of students’ difficulties in learning mathematics. The teachers only focus on the mathematics topics and non-mathematical issues, instead of on students’ thinking process. The teachers also do not differentiate the diagnosis, evaluation, and prediction test. With regard to the strategies used by the teachers to diagnose students’ difficulties, analyzing students’ responses to tests was the majority. In this respect, observing students’ learning process during classroom activities is rarely done by the teachers in the purpose of diagnosing students’ learning difficulties. The results of the diagnosis are mainly used as the basis for remedial and drill and practices. The results imply that more support is needed for teachers to improve their competences particularly in diagnosing students’ thinking process difficulties when learning mathematics.

Abstract

The National Examination in Indonesia, which began in 2015, was no longer a determinant of student graduation at the end of the education level. Utilization of the examination results will affect the seriousness of the students in working on it. This study aims to describe the level of seriousness of 12th grade students in working on National   Examinations, when it no longer a determinant of graduation by examining teachers and school principals’ point of view. This research is a qualitative study by using the phenomenology approach. Data was collected using focus group discussions (FGD) conducted 3 times in 3 provinces in Indonesia, consisted of Yogyakarta, South Kalimantan and East Nusa Tenggara. FGD participants were 9 high school principals, 9 vice principal of curriculum, and 54 teachers who teach subjects that are tested on national exam. In each province, three schools were selected, consisted of   two public schools, and one private school. Data were analyzed using data reduction stages, to find relationships between themes, and verification. The results showed that the motivation of 12th grade students in preparing National Examination were reduced.  They no longer focused on preparing the exams, otherwise they preparing themselves for higher education.  Furthermore, students tended to select subjects that were easier and the teacher should motivate students harder to prepare for the National Examination.

Abstract

Self-efficacy is one of the most researched topics in education and psychology, which grounded within social cognitive theory. Various instruments are available that can be used to measure general self-efficacy. As a foundational instrument in the measurement of general self-efficacy, the study investigated the psychometric properties of the General Self-Efficacy Scale-12 (GSES-12). Although the instrument has been adapted into Bahasa, the contribution of the Rasch measurement model in validating this instrument has never done before. By utilizing various advantages of the Rasch model, the polytomous Rasch model (RSM and PCM) were used. The data used in this study are secondary data from previous research. The sample consisted of 303 students (132 male, 171 female) with an age range 18 - 22 years old (mean age = 19.56, SD = 1.20). The results of Rasch's analysis show that the psychometric characteristics of GSES-12 are adequate. The data fit to the Partial Credit Model compared to Rating Scale Model. All assumptions in applying the Rasch model are fulfilled, and also the item fit to the model. Implications and suggestions for future research are also discussed.

Abstract

Abstract

Kata kunci: estimasi kemampuan, metode maksimum likelihood, metode Bayes     THE COMPARISON OF ESTIMATION OF LATENT TRAITS USING MAXIMUM LIKELIHOOD AND BAYES METHODS Abstract This study aimed to compare the accuracy of the estimation of latent ability (latent trait) in the logistic model using maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayes methods. This study uses a quantitative approach that is the Monte Carlo simulation method using students responses to national examination as data model, and variables are the length of the test and the number of participants. The data were generated using SAS/IML with replication 40 times, and each datum is then estimated by ML and Bayes. The estimation results are then compared with the true abilities, by calculating the mean square of error (MSE) and correlation between the true ability and the results of estimation. The smaller MSE estimation method is said to be better. The study shows that on the estimates with 15, 20, 25, and 30 items with 500 and 1,000 participants, the results have not been stable, but when participants were upto 1,500 people, it was obtained accuracy estimation capabilities similar to the ML and Bayesian methods, and with 15 items and participants of 500, 1,000, and 1,500, the result has not been stable, while using 20 items, the results have not been stable, and when estimates involve 25 and 30 items, either by participants 500, 1,000, and 1,500 it will obtain more accurate results with ML method. Abstract

The Indonesian Testing Service Centre (ITSC) has developed an online standardized test called TOEP (Test of English Proficiency) as a fresh alternative for measuring the test takers’ listening and reading proficiency. To ensure its quality, the TOEP scores need to be validated against the scores obtained from another established standardized test, in this case the ITP-TOEFL. This study aimed at finding out to what extent the range of scores which are measured by TOEP can predict the scores obtained from ITP-TOEFL. A quantitative approach was applied in this study, focusing on the analysis of scores obtained by 1,048 people taking TOEP in 2016, 2017, and 2019 and 383 testees had taken both TOEP and ITP-TOEFL. A regression analysis was conducted to establish the prediction equation of TOEP to ITP-TOEFL. The range of scores of proficiency measured through TOEP was estimated using the advanced item response theory, especially the information function value. The results of analysis show that TOEP can predict test takers’ English proficiency in the range of minimum 310 and maximum 656.34 at the ITP-TOEFL scales. It can be concluded that TOEP has a good predictive validity to ITP-TOEFL.

Abstract

This study aims to identify teachers' practices and barriers in carrying out a cognitive mathematics assessment during the COVID-19 pandemic. The type of research used is an online survey using a google form, which is spread over ten days via WhatsApp. This survey uses a qualitative approach. The research instrument was constructed from a pocketbook of periodic diagnostic assessment. A total of 78 primary to secondary school teachers from various regions in Indonesia participated. Data analysis was done descriptively, while data from open questions were analyzed using Atlasti 9. The study results present the practice of cognitive assessment regularly carried out by online-based mathematics teachers in high-grade elementary schools to secondary schools. In contrast, low-grade elementary schools are conducted by home visit. In practice, teachers experience several obstacles: the validity of the answers, limited time in the assessment, barriers from students themselves, and facilities. These obstacles cause the assessment results not to describe the cognitive level in-depth or provide valid and reliable information regarding students' achievement.
