Abstract

Riddle game is one of the good techniques in teaching speaking. The objectives of this research are to describe the application of riddle game in teaching speaking, identify the advantages, identify the disadvantages and identify the solution of disadvantages of riddle game.The researcher uses descriptive qualitative research. The sources of data taken from participants, social situation and document. In this research, the researcher uses purposive sampling. To collect the data, there are observation, interview and documentation. Data validity is triangulation. The data are analyzed by using condensation, display the data, verification and conclusion.The result of this research are (1) the application of riddle game in teaching speaking is divided into three steps: (a) pre-activities (b) whilst-activities (c) post-activities (2) The advantages of riddle game in teaching speaking makes the students active in learning process, happy, increase their vocabulary, able to pronounce some words well and confident to retell the story (3) The disadvantages: makes the class crowded and riddle game has limited time (4) The solution of disadvantages of riddle game is the teacher can manage the time well and able to control the students well in order to make a good atmosphere of the class.

Abstract

Film is one of the popular literary product that are produced to entertain. Film is the object material for this research study. This research analyzes about espionage in Salt film. It analyzes focus in Espionage that happen in the world. Espionage practices in Salt film are related closely to the espionage in the world. The aim of this research is to analyze why is the espionage still exist up to 21st century. A study of popular literature is chosen by the researcher in order to analyze the research problems. The results of the research are to show that United States is the winner of Cold War with its espionage activity. Salt is an espionage film that contains the high intelligence, secret cover, spy cases, and war of ideology. The development of espionage films where Hollywood always makes United States as the winner is the evident that espionage film is populer. The popularity of espionage films is influenced by the espionage practices in the real world. Espionage in the 21st century still occurs in some countries with difference motives. The purposes of the espionage activities are to show the superiority, power and existence of some countries especially United States as an international police in the world.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe the intertextuality in transforming the portrayal of God in two movies entitled Bruce Almighty and God Tussi Great Ho. The transformation is seen in portraying God in Bruce Almighty which uses Zeus God and in God Tussi Great Ho which uses Siva God. It is influenced by believes which occurs the culture of those movies. This research uses qualitative method. The researcher collects the primary data is from movies and secondary data is from Kristeva’s intertextuality. The analysis of this study takes some phenomena in both of two films which are going to same identify supporting by other references about American and Indian culture. Then, analyzes all of them, interprets them in description. The conclusion is the portraying of imitation God in both of two movies use some names, color symbolism, and God’s character in same way.

Abstract

One of the English skills that has to be learned by the students is speaking. Speaking every day at school will make the students have an ability to speak in public, to deliver their inspirations or views in correct way. Developing this ability can be done by guiding the students to speak English in right way. English is a need in this global and developing world. It can be easier if studying English using media. One of media that can be used is “Top Speak”. This study is aimed to give solution to the junior high school students to develop their ability in speaking English in right way and guide them how to be a public speaker. By doing this research, hopefully the students of junior high school can speak and express their point of views accurately. This research uses legend as the topic for teaching and learning process. The legend is taken from the story in Indonesia that can be learn and known by the students to improve their knowledge. The story is in the form of conversation and the students have to practice the story so they will feel the situation in the story. The researcher uses “Top Speak” to help the students as the property in practicing the story. This practice will make the student easily speak English. The type of this research is descriptive qualitative with the students of SMP N 3 Dolopo as the subject. The researcher uses interview, documentation, field note, and checklist as data collection method. The result of this research shows that the students are very interested in speaking English. It can be seen from the way the students speak in front of the class bravely. Moreover, the media is very interesting for the students. The teacher also can make this media easily. This study found some problems during the research such as the location of the school, the schedule of the research, time allotment for the process of making the media, and the students’ shyness to speak in public area.

Abstract

The implementation of CALL in the classroom to improve the students’ reading capability is successful viewed from some dimensions. The implementation of CALL in the classroom can change the role of students and teacher in classroom interaction; from teacher-centered to students-centered which makes the students be the central of the instructional process. CALL also improves the process of learning. It motivates the students to learn, provides various teaching materials, and triggers the students’ creativity by providing nearly unlimited learning materials. However, in integrating the application into the curriculum the teacher need to make the application meaningful for the students. For this, the function of the computer is to support the learning objectives. The implementation of CALL in the classroom is very essential in enhancing the students’ capability in English language learning. Therefore, it is recommended that; (1) English teachers should pave the way the development of technology to improve their quality of teaching; (2) English teacher need to be creative and innovative in developing learning strategies to create better learning environments; (3) Schools have to provide the students  better facilities; and (4) Due to the limited time to study at school, it is recommended for the students to study after class since CALL provides them opportunities to develop themselves to improve their language competence, especially reading.

Abstract

            People will not only use language for sharing message but also due to do an action. Through language, people will ask, promise, refuse, greet, invite, thank, and so on. The purpose of this research is to identify the speech acts preference used by Indonesian and Filipino non – native speakers of English via Facebook Messenger. Besides, to identify the similar or different of speech acts preference they used.             The source of data are utterances of conversation in Facebook Messenger. The researcher applies documentation and an observation (reading the book and internet as the references) in collecting the data. After collecting the data, the researcher analyzes the data by focusing the speech acts theory. In order to support the evidence of the result, the researcher needs to describe and compare the high context-cultures and low context-cultures by Hall (1976) and also cultural dimension of Indonesia and Philippines by Hofstede.The result of the analysis shows that the most speech acts preference used by Indonesian and Filipino non - native speakers of English is direct speech act. Similar and different types of speech acts are found. The similar speech act preferences are found in declarations and representatives. The different speech acts preferences are found in expressives, directives, commissives, direct, and indirect speech acts. The result of this research also shows that the communication of Indonesian and Filipino are included into low contex-cultures. It is contrary with the theory of Hall and Hofstede which shows that Indonesia and Philippines factually should be high context-cultures.

Abstract

The researcher investigated the relationship between psychopath genre movie and society. It aims to describe and analyze the development of formula in psychopathic genre and to find the reason why this genre entertains the audience. This research deals with analyzing genre in psychopathic movies through Gone Girl. In this research, the researcher uses qualitative research method. There are 20 movies used in this analysis. Those movies are taken from several production houses during the year 1971 - 2014. All of this movies tell about female psychopath. The researcher uses concept of formula based on Cawelti’s theory. There are five formulas in psychopath genre movie and it has developed over the time. The changing of psychopath genre’s formulas is based on desire of society. Environment become a major factor of someone to be psychopath. Many criminality and pressure happen in our society affect the increasing number of psychopath. It is the reason why this genre still exist because it reflects society’s life.

Abstract

This research describes the translation strategy of idiomatic expression used by translator and the quality of translation of idiomatic expression in the short story by Roald Dahl entitled “Man from the South”. This research uses descriptive qualitative method and uses content analysis as the data collection technique. To check the validity of this research, the researcher uses triangulation such as, data triangulation, investigator triangulation, theory triangulation, and methodological triangulation. The results of this research shows that several translation strategies are applied, which include idioms of similar meaning and form, translation by paraphrase, and translation by omission. In this research, paraphrase strategy is in the most applied strategy87.88% of the data (58 idiomatic expressions) use translation by paraphrase. This research also shows that the quality of translation of idiomatic expression translation which consists of accuracy, naturalness, and clarity is categorized as good translation. It can be seen from the results that 75% of the data are accurate, 78, 79% of the data are natural, and78, 79% of the data are clear.

Abstract

Innovative way in teaching L2 learners can be considered as a challenging job while it can be facilitated by using "Magic Box" as a tool box consists of many stationeries, types of papers and reuse things to innovate new interactive media. The main purpose of this study was conducted to identify the role of "Magic Box" in innovating interactive media in teaching vocabulary. The samples participants of the study were 10 students of English Department of STKIP Al Hikmah Surabaya. They were chosen because of they have to practice their teaching skills start from first semester, so they should develop their vocabulary. The lecture will guide and show to the students how to innovate interactive media using “Magic Box”. This study was designed as a qualitative study with pre-test and post-test instruments allow lectures to empirically evaluate the effectiveness of "Magic Box" in innovating interactive media in learning vocabulary by the students through formative assessment. After analyzing the pre-test and post-test it was found that using "Magic Box" has the important and determine role in teaching vocabularies to the students, as it was not possible as well as learning with just repetition and memorizing methods. Furthermore, "Magic Box" has its potential as a tool box for innovate interactive media, be able to motivate students especially the passive one in the whole teaching learning process, and also trigger the students to be more creative in innovating interactive media to improve their vocabulary.

Abstract

Mirror, Hands and Eyes is a technique to teach speaking which use mimic in it. This research has purposes to describe how the implementation of Mirror, Hands and Eyes, and to know the advantages and disadvantages of the implementation of Mirror, Hands and Eyes in teaching speaking. This is descriptive qualitative research. The researcher takes three sources of the data, social situation, informant, and document. The sample is using purposive sampling. Observation, interview and documentation are the technique used by the researcher to collect the data. Theoretical and methodological triangulation used by the researcher to measure the valid data. The techniques of analyzing data are compiling, disassembling, reassembling, interpreting, and concluding.The advantages of this technique are increase the students’ speaking skill, increase the students’ enthusiast, easily follow the correct pronunciation, lock the students’ focus. The disadvantages are the technique disallow the students build new words, and the lack of vocabulary makes the students face the difficulties to make sentences. It can be concluded by the theory of Panesso and Brown with little modification to make students speak up that show the implementation of Mirror, Hands and Eyes works in chronological ways with pre-activity, whilst activity, and post activity inside.
