Abstract

Living with others is not only experienced by humans but also by animals. Animals also use a communication system that enables them to work together. However, their communication system is different from humans. This difference is based on specific characters distinguishing a language from that of other social creatures. This manuscript aims to describe the difference between human and animal language. Specifically, it would discuss basic differences in how animals communicate with others and humans. By using the descriptive analysis method through comparing the resulting data with the current knowledge and relevant literature, the author found some of the basic differences between human and animal's language and the way they communicate, One of the basic differences is “productivity”. Humans can create new expressions or new vocabularies continuously to describe any unlimited new object or situation. They, further, can talk about future and goals while animals don't do so. The second difference is “duality”. Human's language has two types of system, namely meaningless voice and a compound of voice elements which create meaning. Animals, on the other hand, are incapable to produce or compound differences voice to a different meaning.

This study aims to explore Nietzsche's and Heidegger's views on the use of language and language power in the classroom and to compare both of their views in the classroom. The expected study is that it has the significance of using the language as the center of communication and teaching-learning. The descriptive qualitative method is applied. The data are taken from four research articles on Nietzsche's and Heidegger’s views dealing with language power in the classroom. Findings and results from each research article are the data for this study. Every finding and result of the research article becomes the data source to discuss. The findings show that the capability in using language can be the space of power so that it drives the class to become effective and there is an interactive dialogue between the teacher and students.

Abstract

Patriarchy has become the central attention of feminism because its practices expand to many different fields in society, such as politics, law, power relations between male and female and literary works, such as poems. Lee, as a poet with a lot of notable achievements, also internalises his patriarchal ideology through the women representation portrayed in "Persimmons", "Braiding", "Pillow", "Early in the Morning" and "This Room and Everything in It". This study analyses five of Lee's poems utilising close reading to discover the exercises of patriarchy to the female characters in Lee's poems. The points are proven by six structures of patriarchal system, which cover six aspects of social life namely mode of production; salaried employment; state; male violence; culture, and relationship in sexuality. Women's portrayal in Lee's poems specifically reveals patriarchal relations in sexuality. This study concludes that Lee's portrayal of women in his poems is indeed patriarchal by means of (1) characterising women as weak and passive; (2) male dominating as evident in sexual relationship and (3) making women as sex objects.

Abstract

One of the foremost developments in literary criticism is the awareness that colonialism results in ecological devastation of the colonies through exploitation of nature. This phenomenon is legitimized through Western anthropocentric paradigm that considers nature merely as commodity to be utilized for humankind's benefit. This paper analyses the underlying Western colonial discourse that rationalizes ecological exploitation in Hawai'i based on the reading on James Michener's Hawai'i. With postcolonial ecocriticism as the framework, the present study focuses on the conflicts that arise between the islanders and the white settlers concerning human and non-human relationships. Western discourse promotes the superiority of their culture based on the privileged position in a binary opposition which is contrasted with the backwardness of the natives. The labelling of certain Hawai'ian traditions as pagan and heathen practice plays a pivotal role in articulating the Western anthropocentric paradigm in which the missionaries function as agent of colonialism. The culmination of Western colonial discourse manifests in the transformation of Hawai'ian landscape for capitalistic enterprise of agriculture and sugar plantation. This event also signifies the commodification in the landscape and centre-periphery relationship which underlines the economical exploitation of the colony.
