Abstract

The objectives of the research were (1) to discover which mode of nonverbal communication did visitors most frequently use to communicate with non-native English-speakers countries and vice versa, (2) to know which mode of nonverbal communication did the visitors most rarely use to adapt to non-native English-speakers countries and vice versa, (3) to describe non-native English-speakers’culture when the visitors used nonverbal communication with them. The method of the research was descriptive. The research used content validity. The subjects of the research were 54 people taken from the second semester of Batam Center students of University of Riau Kepulauan majoring in English Education Department consisted of 28 students; 5 non-native English-speakers countries (European one) and 21 online respondents of 204.666 members of Backpacker International public group site. The data were collected  through observation and interview then analyzed by SPSS 24 version on the base of Little John’s modes of nonverbal communication (2009). The results of the research were (1) 74.1% (kinesics/body language) was  the  most frequently used; (2) 75.9% (haptics/touch) was the most rarely used; (3) 180 degree of space when Nns met the visitor for the first time (proxemics/space), Nns barely used the touch unless for specific reason (haptics/touch);often used eye contact  when focused on something, punctual (chronemics/time), flat face tended to be cold and rarely used gestures if not necessary (kinesics/body language), in the center city, women were more fashionable, average body liked their height got many benefits (physical environment-appearance). Like all Euroepan, Nns tended to speak faster and not clear enough (paralanguage/vocalics). In brief, the faster visitors could adapt to them the faster NNs opened themselves to the visitors.

Abstract

This research was conducted to figure out whether the implementation of android–based application can improve students’ understanding in simple present tense and to find out the responses of students toward the implementation of the media. This classroom action research is done at the eighth grade students of Fatmawati Learning and Education Center (FLEC) in academic year 2016/2017. It contained 15 students in the classroom. This study had two cycles done and used tests, field notes and interview as the instruments to gather the data. The finding of the research shows that there are significant improvements of students’ achievements since the implementation of the media until the last cycle of the research. It was proved by the improvement resulted in two cycles. According to the results, there are significant improvements in each cycle. The result of pre-test showed that there were only two students or 13.33% passed the exam. The mean of pre-test was 55.67. From the result of first cycle, it can be concluded that there is 28.13% improvement of the result from pre-test. It is proven by the improvement of classroom success and mean. In the first cycle, classroom success is 53.33% and the mean increased to be 71.33. The last cycle is cycle two. It was successful by the result of students. There are 13 students were successful passing the exam and only two students failed. It gave result to the classroom success about 86.67% with the score mean 84. The study also results responses from students toward the media usage in the classroom from students’ interview and field notes. From students’ interview, researcher concluded that the implementation of android-based application as media for teaching in the classroom could solve the problem and increase students’ understanding in learning simple present tense.  Based on the data of field notes, researcher found positive and desired response from the students during the observation. It was observed from verbal and non-verbal responses shown by the students.

Abstract

Based on syllabus, junior high school students learned about degrees of comparison. The purpose of this study is to know how far the eighth grade students of SMP Clarissa Batam in mastering of degrees of comparison. the research type of this study is qualitative research, the population in this research was twenty two students. The research focused in SMP Clarissa Batam and was held on may until June 2017. The data was collected from students by giving test. Then, the writer analyzed the data to know how the students master in degrees of comparison. After that, the writer interviewed some students to know their difficulties in mastering degrees of comparison. the result showed that from 22 students of eighth grade students of SMP Clarissa Batam, only 6  (27.3%) students were able in mastering of degrees of comparison of adjective and there were 16 (72.7%) students are fail in it. it means most of eighth grade students of SMP Clarissa Batam did not master degrees of comparison well

Abstract

This research was concerned with the inquiry of the correlation between vocabulary mastery and English speaking ability of the tenth grade students of Senior High School 12 Palembang. Mastering vocabulary is much needed in order to be good in speaking ability. The problem of the study is to investigate the correlation between vocabulary mastery and English speaking ability of the tenth grade students of Senior High School 12 of Palembang. This is a quantitative study. The data collection is deliberated by adopting test and r Product Moment Correlation is used to analyze the data. Findings show that there is correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their English speaking ability. In respect to the data analysis of this study, it can be concluded that there was significant correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and students’ English speaking ability. It has been analyzed by test of vocabulary mastery and English speaking ability test. The result showed that the coefficient correlation of them was 0.630, rescpectively with the significance level 5% was 0.320. Therefore, alternative hypothesis ( ) is accepted while Null Hypothesis ( ) is rejected. The conclusion suggests that mastering vocabulary has significant role to improve students speaking ability.

Abstract

This research aimed to (1) know whether or not cognitive strategy can increase students’ skill in writing descriptive texts, and (2) know what factors can influence the increasing of those writing skills. This research categorized as action research which conducted in two cycles. Each cyles consisted of four times meeting. Each of them composed of plan, action, observation, dan reflection. The participant in this research was all 22 students of VII-2 SMPN I Indra Praja Tembilahan. The data was collected from (1) Observation sheet; students, teacher, lesson procedures/plan, (2) Field note, (3) Interview, and (4) Writing test. It was found in this research that the use of cognitive strategy can increase students’ skill in writing descriptive texts. The finding of this research shown that there was an increasing of students’ mean score above minimum criteria of minimum learning mastery standard (75).The factors that influenced students’ skill in writing descriptive text were (1) reading material given to students,(2) students’ motivation, and (3) teachers’ approach to students. It can be concluded that the application of cognitive strategy in teaching reading descriptive texts gave positive results shown by the increasing of students’ skill in reading descriptive texts.

Abstract

The objective of the research was to find out whether team-pair-solo is effective to students’ reading comprehension. The research design was quantitative research with experimental design. The research conducted in August 2016. The population in this research was the eleventh grade students of SMA K Yos Sudarso Batam  in the academic years of 2016/2017. Two classes were selected two from the population as sample in this study they were XI A2 and XI A3. The number of the students used as the sample in this research was 60 students. The sample was selected cluster sampling technique. To identify student competence, the writer gave the test before treatment (pre-test) and after treatment (post-test). The result of data analyzing was shown that in after test the mean of experiment class was higher (77.16) than control class (63.83). In the end of hypothesis testing, the writer found that there was significant effect of team-pair-solo to students’ reading comprehension. It means that team-pair-solo able to encourage the students to comprehend the text well

Abstract

The objective of the study is to find out the effect of using save the last word for me method toward students’ writing skill for the eighth grade students’ at SMPN 36 Batam in academic year 2016/2017. The kind of this study was quantitative research. The research design was experimental design. In this study focused on quasi experimental design. The population of this study was all students for the eighth grade at SMPN 36 Batam in Academic Year 2016/2017 consist of 270 students. The sampling technique was purposive sampling. Then, the total number of sample was 60 students that consisted of 30 students of class VIII.6 who were taught by using Save The Last Word For Me method and 30 students of class VIII.4 who were taught by using Think Pair Share method. The data was collected by test. The data was analyzed by using normality test, homogeneity test and hypothesis test. The result showed that the t-observed was 2.97 and the t-table was 2.002. It means that t-observed was higher than t-table. Therefore, alternative hypothesis () was accepted and null hypothesis () was rejected. The research found that there was a significant effect of using Save The Last Word For Me method toward students’ writing skill for the eighth grade students’ at SMPN 36 Batam in academic year 2016/2017

Abstract

This research discussed the influence of students’ personality types to their speaking achievement.  This research used experimental method in collecting the data. The instruments utilized in the inquiry were personality questionnaire and test. The result of the questionnaire and test given to a group of students to the tenth grade students of State Senior High School 6 Palembang show that students’ personality types did not influence their speaking achievement. From the result of R-square (coefficient determination) between independent variable was 0.018. It means that personality types only give little on English speaking achievement. From the study, it shows that there might be other factors that influence speaking achievement. Although personality only gives small contribution, students with extrovert type learn best by talking and physically engaging in the environment. Talking helps their thoughts to form and become clear. Introvert students learn best through quite. Therefore, extrovert students whose personality tends to be more active are better in mastering English speaking than introvert students whose personality tends to be shy, timid and quiet.

Abstract

This research entitled “An Analysis of Sociogenesis Motive of Main Character in ‘Unbroken’ movie. It discussed the socio genesis  of the main character in the movie "UNBROKEN", Unbroken movie which released in 2014 American biographical thriller film in sydney, Australia. This research analyzed the sociogenesis motives of Louis that reflected in “Unbroken” movie. This research applied a qualitative research method. Data collection procedures was got by watching the movie repeatedly, took important data, arranged the data, looked for supporting data and arranged the data sistematically. The method which was used by the writers in analyzing the conflict of the main character in this movie was a descriptive qualitative method.  . Data analysis procedures was analyzed by using the  quotation of the film. Primary data source was Unbroken movie. While secondary data sources were collected from many sources such as the articles, script of movie, biography of the author,  journal from internet, and books related to this research as references to support the data found. Based on the result of analysis, the answer to question was as follows. Louis’s sociogenesis motives was sociogenesis motive with the natural condition of life (drowning, huge waves, strong wind, scorching sun, shortage of food), sociogenesis motives with other species (shark’s attack) and sociogenesis motives with members of one’s own species (contumely from watanabe, the bird). It was concluded that Louis is a man that had incredible sociogenesis motive to survive with the difficult situation. In this research, the writer described how the personal conflict of the main character in the movie "Unbroken" was.

Abstract

This research aimed to describe racial discrimination found in 12 Years a Slave movie and to analyze social stratification reflected in 12 Years a Slave movie. 12 Years a Slave movie is tell about slavery in American at eighteen century which adapted from novel Twelve Years a Slave based on the real experience of author Solomon Northup who became a slave during 12 years. The research design was a qualitative with sociological approach to be analyzed. Then source of the data consisted of primary data and secondary data. Primary data source was 12 Years a Slave movie. Meanwhile, secondary data source derived from book, internet source and journal. The result of the research showed that racial discrimination against Niggers slave was found in form of less well treatment, restriction, insult, and distinction by white people. The researcher also found types of social stratification which included slavery, caste and class were caused by racial discrimination because there had a level position between white people and black people
