Padjadjaran Journal of Dentistry or known as PJD, is an English-language scientific periodicals published by the Faculty of Dentistry Universitas Padjadjaran thrice a year on every March, July and November. The submission process of manuscript is open throughout the year. All submitted manuscripts will go through the double-blind peer review and editorial review before being granted with acceptance for publication. Designed as a medium of information and scientific knowledge, Padjadjaran Journal of Dentistry publishes numerous research articles, in the area of Oral Biology, Dental Material Science and Technology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Pedodontics, Dental Public Health and Community Dentistry, Conservative Dentistry, Periodontics, Prosthodontics, Orthodontics, Oral Medicine, Dental Radiology, as well as with their development through interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach. Initially published as Padjadjaran Journal of Dentistry (PJD) magazine ISSN 1979-0201(print) on 2007 in form of printed issues. In 2017, the magazine had its online published version under the same with ISSN 2549-6212 (online) in accordance with the policy of LIPI. Padjadjaran Journal of Dentistry has been using Open Journal System requiring all writers to register in advance before they are allowed to upload the manuscript they write online. Afterwards, the editors, peer reviewers, and writers can monitor the manuscript processing. Several other changes are informed in the Journal History.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to get the description of gingival condition and oral hygiene in patients with the fixed orthodontic appliance at Orthodontics Specialist Clinic of Oral and Dental Hospital Faculty of Dentistry Universitas Padjadjaran (RSGM FKG UNPAD) Bandung. This descriptive study with a survey method included 30 patients with fixed orthodontic appliances consist of 8 male and 22 females. The sample collected by purposive sampling. The data was collected based on filling questioner forms and clinical examination with an assessed degree of gingival enlargement by Carranza assessed Gingival Index by Loe and Silness, measured pocket depth, and assessed Plaque Index by Silness and Loe. The result showed that 90% of samples had gingival enlargement with variants of gingival enlargement degree from grade 1, 2, 3 and mostly present in the posterior area. Prevalence of gingivitis was 100% divided into 76.67% suffering mild gingivitis and 23.33% suffering moderate gingivitis. In an examination of pocket depth, 6.67% had 1.1-2 mm of pocket depth; 70% had 2.1-3 mm of pocket depth, and 23.33% had 3.1-4 mm. In an examination of oral hygiene, 43.33% had good oral hygiene; 46.67% had moderate oral hygiene, and 10% had poor oral hygiene. The conclusion of this research was the orthodontics wearer suffering from gingival enlargement and mild gingivitis.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to obtain data of pressure distribution on canine periodontal tissues due to the orthodontic force generated by various types of motion using the Finite Element Method. The development of digital technology creates a numerical analysis for orthodontic treatment that can be done by performing 3-D reconstruction by scanning the maxillary canine teeth with a CT scan so that 255 cross-sectional images is obtained. 3 D model is then processed using the Finite Element Method to obtain the pressure distribution on the periodontal tissues caused by tipping movements, bodily, torque, roots, rotation, and extrusion. The analysis used was the analysis of qualitative and quantitative analysis. The results showed that the maximum pressure that occurs in the periodontal tissues caused by a variety of movements ranging from 3.3 x 10-3MPa to 2.9 x 10-2 MPa. This indicates that the force exerted on each movement produces maximum pressure that exceeds capillary pressure was 2 x 10-3 MPa.

Abstract

The aim of an orthodontic treatment is to achieve aesthetic, dental health and the surrounding tissues, occlusal functional relationship, and stability. The success of an orthodontic treatment is influenced by many factors, such as diagnosis and treatment plan. In order to do a diagnosis and a treatment plan, medical record, clinical examination, radiographic examination, extra oral and intra oral photos, as well as study model analysis are needed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the differences in dental arch form between level four polynomial and pentamorphic arch form and to determine which one is best suitable for normal occlusion sample. This analytic comparative study was conducted at Faculty of Dentistry Universitas Padjadjaran on 13 models by comparing the dental arch form using the level four polynomial method based on mathematical calculations, the pattern of the pentamorphic arch and mandibular normal occlusion as a control. The results obtained were tested using statistical analysis T student test. The results indicate a significant difference both in the form of level four polynomial method and pentamorphic arch form when compared with mandibular normal occlusion dental arch form. Level four polynomial fits better, compare to pentamorphic arch form.

Abstract

Ananas comosus (L.) Merr has several purposes which include antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity that shows some pharmacological effects and the subject of anti-cancer or anti-cancer supporting material. The research objective was to analyze the effects of ethyl acetate fraction of Ananas comosus (L.) Merr. of tongue cancer cell growth inhibition Supri’s clone-1 (SP-C1). This type of study was a research laboratory. Next, cell growth inhibition testing by the ethyl acetate fraction of Ananas comosus (L.) Merr. with various concentrations (0; 62.5; 125; 250; 250; 500 and 1000 microgram/ml) using the MTT assay test. Growth barriers identified by Biorad microplate tool reader with a wavelength of 540 nm. The number of SP-C1 cells examined was 2 x 104 cells/wells with incubation time 24 and 48 hours. Data were analyzed using a two-ways ANOVA followed by post hoc test (LSD test) with 95% significance level. The results showed ethyl acetate fraction of Ananas comosus (L.) Merr. able to inhibit the growth of cancer cells SP-C1. Various concentrations of ethyl acetate fraction of pineapple were highly significant, meaning that the concentration effect on cell growth of SP-C1. Similarly, incubation time effect on the growth of SP-C1 cells that were very meaningful. The biggest obstacle effect of ethyl acetate fraction of Ananas comosus (L.) Merr. occurred at a concentration of 1000 ug/ml (43.45%) with an incubation time of 48 hours. Conclusion of this study was the fraction of ethyl acetate Ananas comosus (L.) Merr. has the effect of inhibiting the growth of cancer cells SP-C1.

Abstract

The incidence of tongue cancer in Indonesia reached 1.01% of all cancers and 42% of oral cavity cancer. Tongue cancer therapies including chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery, and all three combined therapy. Search for anti-cancer drugs currently switched on herbal plants, one of which is the mangosteen. Has the properties of mangosteen peel extract inhibited the growth of cancer cells. The purpose of the study, obtain IC50 of ethanol extract of mangosteen peel in inhibiting the growth of human tongue cancer cells SP-C1. Research carried out on 96 preparations of human tongue cancer SP-C1 were incubated with ethanol extract of mangosteen peel, preparations were classified in two groups of incubation time (24 hours and 48 hours) and each group will be given preferential treatment over 6 randomly different concentrations: 0 (control), 62.5 μg/mL, 125 μg/mL, 250 μg/mL, 500 μg/mL and 1000 μg/mL. Model experiments were 2 x 6 factorial experiment with eight replication for each cell. Test results with ANAVA, incubation (24 and 48 hour) SP-tongue cancer cells with various concentrations of C1 ethanol extract of mangosteen peel gives a highly significant, indicating differences cancer cell growth inhibition. Incubation time factor showed the long incubation effect on cancer cell growth inhibition. Furthermore, by Newman Keuls test, showed 500μg/mL concentrations of 24-hour incubation had the best effect. Conclusion of the study of ethanol extract of mangosteen peel could achieve with IC50 values of cell growth resistance 50.3% at a concentration of 500 μg/mL and an incubation time of 24 hours.

Abstract

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction is a term that covers a number of clinical problems that involves masticatory muscles, temporomandibular joints, and related structures, or both. Loss of tooth was an etiology of temporomandibular joint dysfunction. The purpose of this study was to obtain the description of temporomandibular joint dysfunction level that caused by tooth loss of elderly in three nursing home Bandung. This was a descriptive study using the survey method of the elderly in three nursing home Bandung. A total of 34 people consist 6 males and 28 females. The subjects were examined by symptoms of temporomandibular joint dysfunction and the dysfunction level was assessed by Helkimo Clinical Dysfunction Index. The result of this study shows that elderly in Nursing Home Bandung have mild dysfunction level was 7 (14.71%), moderate dysfunction level was 22 (64.71%), and severe dysfunction level is 5 (20.58%). It can be concluded that loss of the teeth is one of the etiologies of temporomandibular joint disorder. Based on the research conducted, it can be concluded that all elderly with teeth loss will have the temporomandibular joint disorder and the most severity happens based on teeth loss by using the Helkimo Clinical Disfunction Index score was the moderate disorder.

Abstract

Casein Phosphopeptide-Amorphous Calcium Phosphate (CPP-ACP) paste is a topical application substance that consisted of a series of milk derivative peptide as a result of phosphorylation and has an antibacterial activity. The objective of this research was to find out the difference of Streptococcus mutans growth before and after CPP-ACP paste given topically to childs teeth. The method of the research was a quasi-experiment. Research samples were 10 students of MI Al Falah Islamic Boarding School, Jatinangor, West Jawa Indonesia and collected with purposive sampling technique. This research used dental plaque from childs teeth before and after applicated by CPP-ACP paste. The plaque was cultivated in selective media Tryptone Yeast Cysteine Sucrose Bacitracin (TYCSB) with repeated twice. Streptococcus mutans colony in TYCSB were counted by Stuart colony counter and statistically analyzed based on paired t-test. The results showed the average of Streptococcus mutans growth before applicated CPP-ACP paste was 57.05, whereas after applicated CPP-ACP paste for 1 days was 9.4; for 3 days was 2.85, and for 14 days was 1.7 colony. The research concluded that there was a decrease of Streptococcus mutans growth in isolate plaque after CPP-ACP paste topically given to childs teeth.

Abstract

Beta major thalassemia is characterized by severe hereditary hemolytic anemia. The oral mucous of children with beta major thalassemia becomes yellow grayish due to the combination of pallor, icterus/yellowish and grayish pigmentation. The purpose of this research was to obtain a clinical data of oral mucous color of beta major thalassemia childrens patients at the Thalassemia Polyclinic of Pediatric Department in Dr. Hasan Sadikin General Hospital Bandung in December 2009 until January 2010. This research was the description method with survey technique. The sampling technique was consecutive sampling. The sample was collected in one month and resulting 129 sample. The data obtained by clinical evaluation of each part of oral mucous. Research result showed that the clinical color of oral mucous of beta major thalassemia children patients becomes pallor, yellowish, yellow, yellow grayish, yellow blackish differently of each part of oral mucous. Pallor mostly at tongue, yellowish at buccal mucous, yellow at soft palate, yellow grayish at sublingual, hard palate, gingival, and yellow blackish at hard palate. The conclusion of this research was that the color of the oral mucous beta major thalassemia children patients was changed and was different with the color of oral mucous in normal children.

Abstract

Beta major thalassemia is a genetically inherited blood disorder due to a genetic mutation on the polypeptide chains of hemoglobin which is manifested in the growth and development of the tooth. The objectives of the investigation were to obtain differences of the crown and root lengths of the mandibular first right side permanent molar between beta major thalassemia children and normal children group at the matching ages of 11 to 13 years old. The descriptive comparative method was used in the study and samples were selected using the purposive sampling technique. Sample numbers, which were obtained using the consecutive sampling technique, consists of 12 children of beta major thalassemia and 12 of normal children at the matching ages of 11 to 13 years. Periapical radiographs of both thalassemia and normal children were administered using the method of Seow and Lai. Data were analyzed using t-test method. The study revealed that the crown and root lengths of the mandibular first right side permanent molar of beta major thalassemia children were shorter than normal children at the ages of 11 to 13 years.

Abstract

Disharmonious of dental arrangement can possibly create problems for the patient, such as the masticatory function, esthetical, psychosocial, and also the increased risk of trauma and periodontal disease. These are reasons for a patient to seek orthodontic treatment. The aim of this study was to know the patient’s knowledge about the side effects possibility that they receive during orthodontic treatment. The side effects include pain experience during orthodontic treatment, the possibility of soft tissue damage, email demineralization, loss of tooth vitality, periodontal problem, root resorption, temporomandibular joint disorders, and relapse. A cross-sectional study was conducted in patients who registered at Orthodontic Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Indonesia on March-June 2009. The participants of this study were 100 patients, consist of 86 women and 14 men respectively. Twenty-seven questions about the side-effects of orthodontic treatment were used to obtain the patient’s knowledge and the result was categorized into 3 groups, good, average and poor. The result of the study showed that patient’s knowledge about the side effect of pain experience during orthodontic treatment was average and the patient’s knowledge about the possibility of soft tissue damage due to orthodontic treatment was good. However, the patient’s knowledge about the possibility of email demineralization, loss of tooth vitality, periodontal problem, root resorption, temporomandibular joint disorders and relapse due to orthodontic treatment was low.
