Abstract

This research was a descriptive qualitative research. Aim at describers types and motives of swearing uttered by Dave and Halley in Crawl Movie by Alexander Aja. This research focused in analyzing words which contain swearing that are used by Haley Keller and Dave in Crawl Movie by Alexander Aja. The scope of this research is Sociolinguistics field that has function to know the relationship between language and society. This research only focuses in analyzing the types of swearing and the motive of using swearing.. The researcher used documentation method to collect the data. In this research, the researcher applied three steps of data analysis made by Miles and Huberman theory, those three steos are data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing/verification. The researcher found that there are 3 types of swearing that is used in Crawl Movie. Those are expletive, abusive, and auxiliary. The expletive is the most swearing uttered by the characters in Crawl Movie. They appeared 22 times. It is followed by the abusive which are uttered 5 times and auxiliary are uttered 5 times. Therefore, there are 3 kinds of swearing motives. They are psychological, social and linguistic motives. Psychological is the most motive used in the movie. Swearing with psychological motive occurred 24 times. Meanwhile, linguistic motive occurred 5 times. Then, social motive only occurred 3 times.

Abstract

Objectives of this research are to identify types and functions of lexical cohesion and the most dominant one in Frozen II movie. The researcher employs descriptive qualitative method by downloaded movie’s script from internet and classified the lexical cohesion in utterances of the main characters in script of Frozen II movie. After collecting and selecting the data, the researcher starts to analyze the data by using Miles and Huberman's qualitative data analysis method. The method consists of three steps, namely data reduction, data display, and verification and conclusion drawing. The results show that in Frozen II movie there were 151 utterances of lexical cohesion. They are 110 data of reiteration and 41 data of collocation. In reiteration was found 94 repetitions, 9 synonyms, 3 superordinates, and 4 general words. In collocation was found 17 antonyms and 24 unordered lexical sets. The lexical cohesion that often used by authors in Frozen II movie was reiterations in order to send implicative meaning which hoped understood by viewers. Furthermore, the researcher finds reiteration as the most dominant type.

Abstract

This research is a descriptive qualitative which analyze the illocutionary act in the main character in Spider-Man: Far From Home Movie. This research aimed to identify the types and functions of illocutionary act in the main character in Spider-Man: Far From Home Movie. The researcher used Miles and Hubberman’s theory to analyze the data. It consists of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The research found that there are 4 types of illocutionary act that used by the main character in Spider-Man: Far From Home Movie based on Searle theory: those are representatives, expressives, directives, and commisives. Directive is the most illocutionary act used in this Movie. They appeared 36 times. It is followed by expressives which are uttered 31 times. Then, representatives are uttered 8 times and commisives are uttered 3 times. Therefore, There are 4 types of illocutionary function used in this movie based on Searle theory: competitive, convivial, collaborative, and conflictive. Competitive is the most illocutionary function used in this movie. They appeared 55 time. It is followed by convivial which are uttered 16 times. Then, collaborative uttered 4 times. The forth is conflictive that uttered one times.

Abstract

The design of this research was descriptive quantitative study. The researcher used reading test as the instrument to get the research data. Population of the research was taken from the seventh grade students of SMP NU Al-Amnan Bangorejo 2015/2016 Academic Year, because there is only one class of the seventh grader. Based on the result of the test, the percentage score of the seventh grade students at SMP NU Al-Amnan Bangorejo are 60% students categorized as poor, 36% students categorized as good and 4% student categorized as excellent. One student who got the perfect score test had no difficulty in making interrogative sentences both using Verb2 and Tobe2. Nine students who got the good category in percentage of students reading test score having problems on the using Tobe2 (was and were) and have to add (–ed) in regular verb form and no (-ed) in irregular verb form. The rest of the 15 students who got poor category, facing problems on making interrogative sentences use Verb2 and Tobe2. Moreover, based on the researcher observation during the test, the rest 15 students did not do the tests independently.

Abstract

The objective of the research is to know the type of lexical relations in Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and the most dominant of lexical relation found in the same work. To achieve the objectives, the researcher employs descriptive qualitative method by collecting the randomly sentences of the novel chosen. After collecting and selecting the data, the researcher starts to analyze the words in the sentences by using the theory of lexical relation related to Semantics. The results show that in Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland there were 65 utterances of lexical relations. They are 17 utterances of synonyms, 13 utterances of homonym, 5 utterances of hyponyms and 30 utterances of antonyms. It is 17 words of synonyms, 13 words of homonym, 5 words of hyponyms and 34 words of antonyms. By having adequate knowledge on lexical relations, any readers can easily understood the words usage. Furthermore, the researcher finds antonym as the most dominant type, whereas hyponym is the lexical relation type with the least case.

Abstract

This research aims to 1) categorize cultural terms with the theory of translation and culture, 2) analyze translation strategies with the theory of translation strategies and their roles and 3) assess the level of accuracy in translation of cultural terms. The method used is descriptive qualitative. The data in this research are 149 cultural terms, 44 data in the form of words and 105 data in the form of phrases. Data are obtained by documentation, questionnaires and in-depth interview. The results of the research found 19 data of arts, 4 data of clotings, 21 data of culture materials, 52 data of ecology, 39 data of socio-culture and 14 data of society. The translation strategy applied in translating cultural terms are 48 pure borrowing, 15 subtraction, 13 synonym, 6 transposition, structural addition and cultural equivalent respectively 5 data, 1 semantic addition and 1 descriptive equivalent. It is also found the using of couplet strategy, pure borrowing+transposition 40 data, transposition+structural addition 5 data, transposition+semantic addition 5 data, pure borrowing+structural addition and synonym+structural addition 2 data each and pure borrowing+descriptive equivalent 1 data. The role of the translation strategy in producing accurate translations, pure borrowing strategy gave very positive impact on the accuracy of the translation. Meanwhile the less accuracies and inaccuracies occured in translation caused by the using of subtraction strategies, inappropriate synonym strategies, and semantic-addition strategy. The translation accuracy of cultural terms in the Visitor's Guide Book: Majestic Banyuwangi is qualified high level of text accuracy. The accurate translations are 133 data (89,26%), less accurate translations are 14 data (9,4%) and 2 data (1,34%) are inaccurate translations. It can be concluded that the translation resulted is accurate based on the using of translation strategies. They are pure borrowing, structural addition, transposition+structural addition, pure borrowing+structural addition, synonym+structural addition, descriptive equivalent, pure borrowing+descriptive equivalent. It means that Banyuwangi bilingual tourism publication is translated accurately by using those seven strategies.

Abstract

This research is a comparative study of translation using descriptive qualitative approach. It aims at examining the quality (accuracy and acceptability levels) of religious terms translation of two translation works of an outstanding qualities novel written by Umberto Eco entitle The Name of the Rose. To be exact, this research airmed to: 1). Measure the translation accuracy and acceptability of religious terms in The Name of the Rose published by Jalasutra, 2). Measure the translation accuarcy and acceptability of religious terms in The Name of the Rose published by Bentang Pustaka, and 3). Describe the differences and similarities of the translation accuracy and acceptability of religious terms published by Jalasutra and Bentang Pustaka. The research data are religious terms found in The Name of the Rose which is collected using documentation method. The collected data are analyzed by using three following steps, 1). Comparing, 2). Describing and 3). Reporting. To assess translation accuracy and acceptability, the researcher used the translation quality assessment instruments by Prof. Mangatur Nababan. The research results that the translation accuracy and acceptability of The Name of the Rose published by Jalasutra and Bentang Pustaka are good. Both provide accurate translation of religious terms since they successfully translate 321 terms accurately. However, Bentang Pustaka translates 14 terms less accurately and 6 terms with inaccurate while Jalasutra translates 10 terms less accurately and 10 terms with inaccurate. The different quality of accuracy and acceptability was due to the translators’ different consideration between maintaining the accuracy and acceptability level or reaching high readability translation. The conclusion is that Bentang Pustaka provides better translation than Jalasutra.

Abstract

Objectives of this research are to identify types and levels of code-mixing and the most dominant one in Deddy Corbuzier’s Podcast. The researcher employs descriptive qualitative method by downloaded podcast video from youtube and write down the script and classified the types of code-mixing and levels of code-mixing in utterances of the dialog between Deddy and Azka in podcast channel video. After collecting and selecting the data, the researcher starts to analyze the data by using Muskyen and Suwito's qualitative data analysis method. The method consists of three steps, namely data reduction, data display, and verification and conclusion drawing. The results show that in Deddy Corbuzier’s Podcast Channel there were 77 utterances of Code-Mixing. They are 77 data of types of code-mixing and 90 data of levels of code-mixing The dominant type of code mixing is “Altetnation”. While the dominant levels of code-mixing is “Clause”. The researcher found that there are types of code mixing, they are 23 data of insertion, 33 data of alternation, and 21 data of congruent Lexicalization. Then, The reseacher found that levels of code-mixing, there are 30 data of word, 20 data of phrase, 1 data of repitition, 1 data of baster, 38 data of clause, and no idioms levels Based on the result above, it was concluded that all types and levels of code-mixing that was found in Deddy Corbuzier’s Podcast Channel.
