Abstract

This research aims to investigate the types of conjunctions and the accurately use of conjunction in students’ writing. This research was conducted in SMAN 1 Tongkuno. The instrument of this research was students’ writing that focused on recount text. This research employed descriptive qualitative design. The population of this research was the second-grade students of SMAN 1 Tongkuno. The sample of this  research  is  the  second-grade  students of SMA N 1 Tongkuno consist of 20 students. The researcher collected the data by asking the students to write their personal recount. The technique of data analysis in this study was descriptive analysis, while to analyze the accuracy of conjunction the researcher used criteria of correctness in cohesion that consist of the use of conjunction on students’ writing. The result shows that all of types of conjunction exist in students writing, additive conjunction is the most frequently conjunction used in students’ writing, followed by temporal conjunction, then causal conjunction, and the last adversative conjunction. The accuracy of conjunction used by students on their writing contribute highly because mostly the second-grade students of SMAN 1 Tongkuno use conjunction accurately. Keywords: Conjunction, Recount Text, Writing

Abstract

The research was conducted to analyze the use of Higher Order Thinking Skills in English textbook exercises for senior high school. The scope was focused on three skills; analyze, evaluate and create that exist on reading exercises of English textbook “Bahasa Inggris Kelas X SMA/MA/SMK/MAK”. The research used desk research while the instrument used guideline according to Bloom’s Taxonomy Revised. Technique of data analysis consisted of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The result showed that from 168 reading exercises, 9 exercises were classified into analyze (C4), 5 exercises were classified into evaluate (C5) and 2 exercises were classified into create (C4). This meant that from 168 reading exercises in English textbook, 16 exercises were classified into higher order thinking skills, with the frequency of question 56,25% Analyze (C4), 31,25% Evaluate (C5) and 12,5% Create (C6). Therefore, findings indicated that higher order thinking skills in English textbook reading exercises was still low.

Abstract

This research is about the analysis irregularities of turn- taking  on  Me  Before  You  movie.  The  objectives  of  this research were (1) to describe the types irregularities of turn- takings produced by characters in “Me Before You” movie. (2)  to  describe  the  reasons  of  interruption  turn-takings happened in the movie. This research used a qualitative method to desribe and analyze the utterance. The technique of data collection were (1) watching the movie entitled Me Before You (2) identifying the problems in Me Before You movie (3) formulating the research problems (4) determining the objectives of the study (5) determining theories on context and turn-taking to analyze the data (6) collecting the data manually (7) transferring the chosen data into a data sheet (8) reporting the data. The technique of data analysis were (1) The analysis begun with the searching of the types of irregular turn-takings that are interruption and overlap (2) The reasons why interruption and overlaps emerged in the conversation of the movie are then categorized. The result of this research shows that there is 88.88% of interruption occurred in that movie and 11.11% is about overlapping occurrence. Keywords: irregularities, turn- taking, overlapping, interruption

Abstract

Emotional intelligence and translation ability level vary among individual students. The present study seeks to examine (1) the relationship between students’ emotional intelligence and their translation ability. It also aims at (2) determining which dimension of emotional intelligence can best predict students’ translation ability. The study employed a descriptive quantitative design. Participants of this study were the sixth semester students in Translation Class at English Education Department of Halu Oleo University. The population was 101 students and 80 students were taken as the sample using purposive sampling technique. The data were obtained from emotional intelligence questionnaire and students’ translation scores. The analysis used Pearson correlation and Regression analysis by using SPSS 20. The results reveal that (1) there is no significant relationship between emotional intelligence and students’ translation ability, and (2) one of the dimensions of emotional intelligence have statically relationship with students’ translation score that is self-regulation dimension. Keywords: Relationship; Emotional Intelligence; Translation Ability

Abstract

The objectives of this research were: (1) to find out the students’ level of morphological awareness at English Education Department; (2) to figure out the students’ level of academic vocabulary knowledge at English Education Department; (3) to see the relationship of students’ morphological awareness to students’ academic vocabulary knowledge at English Education Department. This research used correlational research design. The population was English Education Department students of Halu Oleo University who were enrolled in academic year 2020/2021 of fifth semester with a total of 127 students. The sample of this research was 32 students in class B. The research instruments were 31 questions of morphological awareness test and 32 questions of vocabulary level test (VLT) which consisted of 96 academic words. To collect the data, the researcher conducted morphological awareness test and vocabulary level test. To analyze the data, the researcher used descriptive and inferential statistics. The result of this research revealed that: (1) students’ level of morphological awareness was on low level with the mean of score is 49.39 (SD = 21.99); (2) students’ level of academic vocabulary knowledge was on low level as well with the mean of score was 54.26 (SD = 19.63); (3) based on the calculation of Pearson correlation coefficient (r) was 0.523 > critical value (0.3009), it revealed that students’ morphological awareness was significantly related to students’ academic vocabulary knowledge at English Education Department. In conclusion, the strength of the correlation of students’ morphological awareness to students’ academic vocabulary knowledge at English Education department was at moderate level (0.40 – 0.60).

Abstract

This research is conducted to describe whether or not Word Wall Strategy has a significant effect on students’ English tenses mastery at grade VIII of Junior High School 1 Kendari. It focused on two tenses, namely simple present tense and simple past tense. The population of this research was grade VIII students of Junior High School 1 Kendari consisting of ten classes, while the subject of this research was class VIII6 which consisted of 34 students. This research was conducted in pre-experimental research design. The data of this research were collected by giving pre-test and post-test to students. They were calculated through SPSS 16.00 version and analyzed by using descriptive analysis and inferential statistics. As for testing the hypothesis, the researcher uses paired sample t-test.The result showed that there was an improvement of the students’ English tenses mastery. It can be seen on the mean score of post-test which was 69.55, while the mean score of pre-test was 32.88. In order to prove the hypothesis, the researcher took the conclusion by comparing between the value of Sig (2 tailed) with the significance α value. It showed that the value of Sig (2 tailed) was 0.000 while the significance α value was 0.05. Therefore, it can be concluded that the value of Sig (2 tailed) was lower than the significance α value (0.000 < 0.05). It means that there was a significant effect of Word Wall Strategy on students’ English tenses mastery at grade VIII of Junior High School 1 Kendari.

Abstract

This research is conducted to find out whether there is a significant effect of Problem Based Learning (PBL) Model on students’ speaking achievement at class XI of SMAN 10 Kendari. The design of this research was pre-experimental research (one group pre-test and post-test design). The population involved the XI-graders science program (X1 MIA) of SMAN 10 Kendari which consisted of four classes, while the sample taken by using simple random sampling technique was students at class X1 MIA 4 consisting of 21 students. The instrument was an oral test about asking and giving opinion related to the topic. The researcher used Paired Sample T-test through SPSS 16.0 version to analyze the result of the research. The result showed that the mean score of students’ speaking achievement in posttest was higher than that of in pre-test (55.47 > 37.14). The hypothesis testing found that the value of sig (2 Tailed) was 0.00 while the significant alpha value was 0.05. It can be concluded that the value of Sig (2 Tailed) was lower than the significant alpha value (0.00 < 0.05). It means that the use of Problem Based Learning model has a significant effect on students’ speaking achievement at the XI grade of SMAN 10 Kendari.

Abstract

Content analysis of the textbook has an important role because the analysis result can be used to determine whether the teacher can use the content of the textbook, or it needs to be revised. This research was conducted to analyze the content of English textbook based on five criteria proposed by Badan Standar Nasional Pendidikan (BSNP). This research used qualitative with descriptive method. The data were collected from an English textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris published by Penerbit Yrama Widya for Senior High School. The instrument of this research was a table checklist from BSNP. The researcher used the English textbook that has been applied in SMAN 1 Kapoiala as data sources. In collecting and analyzing the data, the researcher used a table checklist to find out the result of this research. Then, the researcher described the result of the table checklist regarding the completeness, in-depth, social function, element and structure of meaning, and linguistic features criteria. The result of this research showed that from nine chapters of this textbook, five chapters did not successfully fulfill five criteria from BSNP and four of them had successfully fulfilled. This research can be useful for teachers to gain information about the suitability of the content of the textbook following BSNP standard. It is also useful for the authors of the English textbook to improve the quality of the content of the textbook.

Abstract

This thesis is about the analysis of speech acts found in the talk show “Hitam Putih” on Trans 7 (Episode 18th December 2017). The research question of this thesis were (1) What kinds of the illocutionary acts used in host and main guest stars utterance in “Hitam  Putih” talk show? And   (2)   How   perlocutionary   acts implied  in  host  and main guest stars utterance in “Hitam Putih” talk show?. The objectives of this research were to identifying and analyze the types of the illocutionary acts and the perlocutionary acts  implied  in  host  and  main  guest  stars  utterance  in  “Hitam Putih” talk show. This research used a qualitative method to describe   and   analyze   the   utterances.   The   technique   of   data collection were (1) Download the video of talk show Hitam Putih from  YouTube.  (2)  Transcribe  the  conversation  by  listen to   the video  in  several  times.  (3)  Reads  and  observes dialog from the script. (4) Classified the types of illocutionary acts which finding in conversation.   The   technique   of   data   analysis   were   (1)   The researcher identified  the  illocutionary  act  and  perlocutionary  act from the host and main guest stars utterance in Hitam Putih    talk show.     (2)     Described     and     analized     the utterances   which include  illocutionary  and perlocutionary acts by using pragmatic approach. (3) Concluding the data analysis. The result of this thesis show  that  assertive  illocutionary  acts  is  the  dominant  types  of speech act. There are 29 assertive of illocutionary acts, 14 directive of   illocutionary   acts,   15   expressive   of   illocutionary   acts,   1 commissive of illocutionary    acts.    Perlocutionary    acts    which occurs  between the speakers and the listener in the form of give statements, give questions, body language, expressions, and following the speaker’s direction. Keywords: Speech Act, Illocutionary Acts, Perlocutionary Acts, Hitam Putih, Trans 7

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the quality of English summative test at grade eleven of Madrasah Aliyah (MA) Bina Cendekia Tampo. The design of this research was descriptive quantitative research. In analyzing the data, the researcher used quantitative analysisusing the SPSS 25.0 program and Microsoft Excel to operate data in terms of item validity, the level of difficulty, discrimination power,item of distractors and reliability of the test. The result of the research shows that : (1) In term of validity, there are 12 items (30%) considered valid and 28 items (70%) are considered invalid; (2) In term of level of difficulty, there are 15 items of the test (37,5%) categorized as too difficult, 13 items of the test (32,5%) are categorized as moderate and 12 items (30%) are categorized as too easy; (3) In term of discrimination power, there are 3 items (7,5%) categorized as excellent, 10 items (25%) are categorized as good, 8 items (20%) are categorized as satisfactory, 17 items (42,5%) are categorized as poor and 2 items (5%) are categorized as very poor; (4) In term of item of distractor, there are 27 items (67,5%) categorized as effective and 13 items (32,5%) are categorized ineffective; (5) In term of reliability aspect, the test has high reliability with r11 of the test is 0,775; (6) Based on the overall analysis, there are 3 items of the test categorized as excellent, 10 items of the test are categorized as good, 9 items of the test are categorized assatisfactory, 13 items of the test are categorized as poor and 5 items of the test are categorized as very poor. In conclusion, most of the items in English summative of Madrasah Aliyah (MA) Bina Cendekia Tampo do not fulfill the quality of a good test.
