Abstract

Sexuality is an interesting yet controversial topic in Indonesian culture. The discourse of morality makes it taboo in public. In patriarchy culture, women are always placed as an object of sexuality. In Islam, it also becomes an important topic discussed in Alquran. Now the phenomenon of sex exploitation spreads through the oppression of women’s body. The capitalist uses it to construct a discourse of women’s beauty, to exploit women’s body, and to use seduction to obtain some profits. One of the examples is sales promotion girl (SPG) phenomenon. This reality has influenced some novelists to raise this theme as their main novel topic. One of them is Indah Hanaco. This paper reveals the representation of women’s sexuality in Indah Hanaco’s novel entitled “The Curse of Beauty”. Indah Hanaco had been influenced by the phenomenon of SPG surroundings. Many SPG had trapped in prostitute caused by their sociality lifestyle constructed by the capitalist. They were forced to sell their body to get money to beautify their appearance. It became very important because it was an asset for them. Actually, it was not only about economic motif, but also psychological motif which affected their consciousness. This phenomenon was also widely discussed from the Islamic perspective, especially in the Alqur’an.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the discourse of Javanese women asceticism in the shadow of Surakarta nobility’s hedonism in the nineteenth to early twentieth centuries. There are several problems to be discussed: first, analyzing the socio-political conditions at Surakarta in the nineteenth to early twentieth centuries; second, examining the hedonism of the royal elite which was celebrated over Javanese women’s asceticism; third, analyzing the motivation for the construction of the discourse of Javanese women’s asceticism. This research used the historical method. The result shows that, traditional rulers and Javanese noblemen Surakarta suffered political defeat against the Dutch colonial government. Hedonism was celebrated on the construction of Javanese women’s asceticism in piwulang estri texts as a release of political defeat. The motivation was to achieve victory over women’s bodies, hearts, and minds. However, Javanese women were good at negotiating with male power, thus they seized power spaces in the household, economy, and bed.

Abstract

Despite a taboo subject amongst society, the matters related to sexuality are always interesting to study. In the early twentieth century, texts on sexuality were quite popular and had even been printed in the form of books that were sold in the book stalls. One of those was Serat Kawruh Sanggama. The purpose of this study was to analyze the form, the function, and the meaning of the politics of the body in the Serat Kawruh Sanggama. The method used in the research was the qualitative-interpretative data analysis combined with the approach of the Politics of the Body. The results of the study have shown that Serat Kawruh Sanggama was written in Kediri and then disseminated by the publisher of the Boekhandel Tan Khoen Swie Kediri. The elements of the Politics of the Body revealed in the text are in the form of narratives related to the procedures or rules of sexual intercourse. It is evident that the elements of the Politics of the Body found on the text served as an instrument of subjugating, controlling, and dominating the female body. This text can be interpreted as an attempt by men to understand the mystery of the female body. However, on the other hand, the text can also be interpreted as an attempt by men to understand the mystery of the female body. In addition, it also represented as a woman's power that encourages men to understand the ins and outs of the female body.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the discourse of virginity represented in Indah Hanaco’s The Curse of Beauty. Sales Promotion Girl (SPG) is one of the professions that are in great demand by women, especially teenagers today. SPG is a woman who has met certain criteria recruited by companies to promote, market and inform consumers of the products. Their work is vulnerable to sexual oppression. This inspired Indah Hanaco in writing her novel. Therefore, there are several issues to be discussed. (1) the form of virginity discourse represented by The Curse of Beauty. (2) the function of virginity discourse in The Curse of Beauty (3) the meaning of virginity discourse represented by Indah Hanaco. This study uses the analysis of form, function, meaning the discourse theory of Michel Foucault. This research shows, virginity is a discourse formed by the social construction of society about women who have never had sexual relations. The form of the discourse of virginity is shown through the story of the taboo of sexual intercourse before marriage or the importance of keeping the chastity (virginity) of women from sex intercourse with a lover. The function of virginity discourse in the novel is as a description of social construction in society about what is a woman's virginity. The meaning of the discourse of virginity represented by Indah Hanaco is that virginity is not a matter of the dignity of women but a matter of oppression of women in this case experienced by the SPG.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the thoughts of Javanese Muslims on cockfighting in the nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries. It has been a custom and culture since humans domesticated chickens. At first, it had a sacred connotation. It eventually devolved into a profane gamble. Although Islam banned animals fighting and gambling, the tradition continued during the Islamic era. This study examines (1) the reasons why Javanese Muslim culture enjoys cockfighting, (2) the forms of Javanese Muslim thought about cockfighting in Javanese manuscripts from the nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries, (3) its influence on colonial and royal rule in Java. Research showed that some thoughts normalized cockfighting and cockfight gambling, but some viewed the game as an evil deed during the nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries.
