This article uses critical discourse analysis to uncover the discourse of pseudo beauty included the shape of the discourse and the reaction of sales promotion girl (SPG) which is represented in Indah Hanaco’s novel The Curse of Beauty. The design of the research is descriptive qualitative. Women wear thick makeup and attractive dress to cover their weakness, and they can be considered as beautiful women. Makeup makes the face more real than the reality thus it is mentioned as pseudo beauty. It makes SPG tries hard to become beautiful and sexy as a way of attracting the consumers. Most of them are trapped in the world of prostitution as the facilitator of sex tourism. SPG and prostitution seemingly become a stereotype that cannot be separated. They are tormented by a falseness and loneliness life in the halfway of hedonism. Capitalism makes them do not have a choice except being SPG which is a side job in sex tourism. These situations are caused by the pseudo beauty which gives them the curse as like represented by Indah Hanaco in her novel The Curse of Beauty.

Abstract

In Indonesian pop novels, women and sex are two particular important issues. Many male and female writers use sexual issues as a trendy theme of their works. This issue can be seen in Indah Hanaco’s novel the Curse of Beauty and Wenda Koiman’s Curhan Hati Sang SPG. Both works also talk about women sexual oppression from their profession as Sales Promotion Girl (SPG), which in some cases, are contradictory with Islamic teaching. The phenomenon of SPG’s marginalization is depicted in the pop novel from the same perspective between men and women authors. Therefore, this article tries to explore (1) how are the forms of sexual oppression of SPG’s body in this pop novels; (2) how are the authors’ perspective on female sexuality through the SPG’s story reflected in this pop novels; (3) how does Islam see the sexuality discourse faced by SPG in this pop novels. This research uses descriptive qualitative. The data is taken from all descriptives concerning SPG body appearance to understand the narrative meaning of the body. This article shows how the phenomenon of women sexual oppression through their profession as SPG has drowned them to the deep immersed that affect to sexploitation and it is not suitable with the norm of religion especially in Islam. Here, women are assumed like electronic devices that appear and disappear quickly as new models come to new circulation]

Abstract

This article examines history collapse of the Soviet Union with Ibn Khaldun's ashabiyah theory. The Soviet Union was first communist nation founded in 1922 after fall of the Russian-Monarchy due to the crisis and saparatist movement in 1917. Post World War II, the Soviet Union became a center of the communist movement around the world, and advanced in industrial sector, known as a superpower nation in the 20th century beside the United States. However, the Soviet Union was declared collapsed in 1991. This article found that Ibn Khaldun's ashabiyah can explain history of the Soviet Union in three stages of state metamorphosis; formation, glory, and collapse. Ashabiyah means a bond that unites the people, but it can be positive and negative. Analysis with negative ashabiyah, concluded that the collapse of Marxism-Leninism in Soviet Union was due to the denial of this philosophical teaching to create the privileges of the Communist Party became an authoritarian regime, and considered irrelevant and opposed by society. Authoritarianism happaned because of exclusivism and cult, and could occur in non-communist nations, including Indonesia in the New Order era, this shows that it is not ideology that created of authoritarian regimes, but political practices in specific nations.

The techniques of collecting the data were reading, note-taking, and documenting in the form of narration and dialogue taken from the novel in accordance with the research problem. However, there were men of the super culture who destroyed Srintil heroism. The indang had also prevented her from realizing her dreams, including having a true lover and having a family. Abstract

This article aims at describing how women domination in domestic sphere is represented and exploited—whether to promote feminism or to sustain patriarchy in sitcom Suami-Suami Takut Istri”and what social dan political consequences of such representation have on women's image, men's image, and their relations. It is presented descriptive qualitatively applying textual approach and feminist cultural studies. The analysis shows that women domination is represented and exploited to sustain patriarchal ideology by negatively constructing women power to dominate not as a real domination, in which women can command respect from their domination. The way the women show domination is also constructed negatively, that is by engaging in all kinds of domestic violence. The análysis also shows that such negative construction results in negative image of women and gender relations, but maintains the positive image of men. Thus, in this way, patriarchy is sustained in sitcom Suami-Suami Takut Istri.

Abstract

Abstract

Sexuality is an interesting yet controversial topic in Indonesian culture. The discourse of morality makes it taboo in public. In patriarchy culture, women are always placed as an object of sexuality. In Islam, it also becomes an important topic discussed in Alquran. Now the phenomenon of sex exploitation spreads through the oppression of women’s body. The capitalist uses it to construct a discourse of women’s beauty, to exploit women’s body, and to use seduction to obtain some profits. One of the examples is sales promotion girl (SPG) phenomenon. This reality has influenced some novelists to raise this theme as their main novel topic. One of them is Indah Hanaco. This paper reveals the representation of women’s sexuality in Indah Hanaco’s novel entitled “The Curse of Beauty”. Indah Hanaco had been influenced by the phenomenon of SPG surroundings. Many SPG had trapped in prostitute caused by their sociality lifestyle constructed by the capitalist. They were forced to sell their body to get money to beautify their appearance. It became very important because it was an asset for them. Actually, it was not only about economic motif, but also psychological motif which affected their consciousness. This phenomenon was also widely discussed from the Islamic perspective, especially in the Alqur’an.

Abstract

Women have been recognized as environmental activists and having a greater awareness of ecology worldwide since the 19th century. There are many stories of women activists worldwide who have developed significant models for protecting the environment. Social media’s popularity has changed how activists advocate their ideas to generate awareness and environmental protection participation. This study focuses on the grassroots women who join SSI and actively campaign for water and river conservation through social media. It attempts to identify how they use social media to campaign and analyzes their posts’ digital contents to understand their motivation for challenging the water river degradation and their value systems and insights, which drive them to take action. This study considers social media as cultural artifacts and providing spaces for social interaction. The researchers observe SSI’s posting behaviors and identify how they use social media for environmental activism to obtain the data. The finding shows two kinds of women activists join SSI: those who actively involve and participate in the campaign and those who click to support the activities. It also shows that the environmental activist women use social media to communicate their activities rather than maximizing its function to campaign to change the public perspective and attitude concerning the need to take care of the rivers’ water and riverbanks. Women activists continue to adopt dominant Indonesian patterns and social media use orders. Social media’s function is still seen only as a space for selfies rather than to develop a political message concerning environmentalism.
