Consequently, the adjective clauses in the novel are easily identifiable and suitable for analysis. The research design is a qualitative study utilizing content analysis to identify adjective clauses in The Little Prince. The researcher identified 16 adjective clauses and categorized them according to their types and functions. Based on type, there are 12 restrictive clauses (75%) and 4 non-restrictive clauses (25%). In terms of function, 10 clauses are relative pronouns (62.5%) and 6 are relative adverbs (37.5%), with relative pronouns being more prevalent. For future research, the researcher recommends a more comprehensive approach and accurate findings to benefit further studies and contribute to educational advancement.

Abstract

In an era of globalization, English proficiency is essential for effective communication among diverse cultural groups, making English for Multicultural Competence (EMC) a vital component of English language education. This research aims to (1) investigate the effectiveness of EMC teaching among higher education students, and (2) explore the impact of English language teaching on developing multicultural competence in higher education students. This study employs a mixed-methods approach, integrating quantitative data from a Likert scale questionnaire and qualitative data from semi-structured interviews. Participants include Indonesian students studying abroad and those engaged in overseas exchange programs. The results indicate a positive correlation between English proficiency and multicultural competence, highlighting that students who actively participate in multicultural activities and utilize English in their campus life develop better intercultural communication skills. Challenges such as time constraints and limited interaction with international peers were also identified. Overall, the results affirm the significance of EMC programs in promoting cultural sensitivity, critical thinking, and empathy among students, ultimately preparing them for success in the global workforce. This research provides insights into effective practices and the impact of English language teaching on enhancing multicultural competence in higher education contexts.

Abstract

Translation plays a crucial role in global communication and education. This research examined the translation strategies used to translate Indonesian news from the official websites of the top three Muhammadiyah universities into English. The objectives of this study were: 1) to identify the translation strategies employed in translating online news from Indonesian to English on the official websites of the top three Muhammadiyah universities, 2) to describe the application of these translation strategies in the Indonesian-to-English online news translations, and 3) to investigate the impact of bilingual or multilingual online news on the websites of the top three Muhammadiyah universities. The researcher employed a qualitative content analysis method. Data were collected from 30 news articles published in Bahasa Indonesia, along with their English translations, with 10 articles sourced from each of the top three Muhammadiyah universities' websites. The analysis and categorization were conducted based on the news translation theory proposed by Bielsa and Bassnett. Additionally, website analysis was used to assess the impact of bilingual news on the universities' websites. The results revealed that the most commonly used translation strategies were elimination (41.25%) and addition (21.88%). Furthermore, having a bilingual university website could attract foreign visitors, as the availability of information in multiple languages or formats positively influences webometrics rankings by increasing the diversity of visitors.

Abstract

The use of vlogs in speaking classrooms. This research aims to (1) describe the effectiveness of vlogs as a learning medium in student speaking achievement; and (2) determine how much influence vlogs have as a medium used in learning to enhance student speaking in the tenth grade at SMAN 1 Badegan Ponorogo. This research was experimental, with a population comprising all tenth-grade students of SMAN 1 Badegan Ponorogo, consisting of ten classes. The X5 and X1 classes were randomly chosen as the sample. The data collection technique used was a post-test only. The data analysis employed was an independent samples t-test, while Cohen’s d-effect size was used to analyze the influence of vlogs as a medium in learning speaking. The results showed that for the independent samples t-test, the value (sig. 2-tailed) was 0.00, which is smaller than 0.05. Therefore, the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. For Cohen’s d-effect size, the value was d = 1.218. These results indicate that the use of vlogs is effective in improving the speaking achievement of tenth-grade students at SMAN 1 Badegan.
