Abstract

Abstract: This research was designed to experiment the effect of cooperative integrated reading and composition (CIRC) technique on the students’ reading comprehension of descriptive texts. The aim was to find out whether there is any significant effect of using CIRC technique on the students’ reading comprehension of descriptive texts. This research took place in SMPN 1 Kubu, Rokan Hilir that collected from January to October 2017. The try out class was VIII4 (25 students) and the sample was VIII2 (25 students) chosen by purposive sampling. This is a pre-experimental research with one group pre-test post-test design. This research used quantitative data and the instrument used to collect the data is a reading test in multiple choice forms. The tests consisted of 40 items. As the result, the mean score of pre-test is 46.52 and the mean score of post-test is 59.80. In other words, the mean score of post-test is higher than the mean score of pre-test. The result also showed that the value of t-test (5.226) is higher than t-table (2.064) at the significance level 5%. It means that Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and Null Hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Hence, there is a significant effect of using CIRC technique on reading comprehension of the second year students of SMPN 1 Kubu, Rokan Hilir in Descriptive texts.Key Words: Student’s Reading Comprehension, CIRC Technique, Descriptive Texts.

Abstract

Abstract: This research investigates the ability of the second semester students of SMA Witama Nasional Plus Pekanbaru in writing a narrative text. The population of this research was the second semester students of SMA Witama Nasional Plus Pekanbaru in academic year of 2019/2020. There were 19 students who participate as the sample of this research. The students are tested using a writing test. The result of the test given was then classified into certain categories. The test results of 19 students shows that 5 students (26.32%) are in excellent category, 14 students (73.68%) are in good level. In addition, the average score of the students in writing a narrative text is 75.61. It means that the students’ ability in writing a narrative text was in the good level. Based on the tests, it can be concluded that the second semester students of SMA Witama Nasional Plus Pekanbaru already were in good ability to write a narrative text. Researcher recommended the students and other researchers to conduct similar research to get further information.Key Words: Ability, Writing, Narrative Text

Abstract

Abstract: This research investigates the ability of the fourth semester students of English department study program FKIP universitas Riau Pekanbaru in using past expression (complex sentences). The population of this research was the fourth semester students of English department study program FKIP universitas Riau Pekanbaru in academic year of 2018/2019. There were 30 students who participate as the sample of this research. The students are tested using a simple test. The result of the test given was then classified into certain categories. The test results of 30 students shows that 6 students (20%) are in good to excellent category, 8 students (26,67%) are in good to excellent level, 8 students (26,67%) at average to good level, 8 students (26,67%) in poor to average level, and last 8 student (26,67%) in poor level. In addition, the average score of the students in past expression (complex sentences) is 61,16. It means that the students’ ability in past expression(complex sentences) was in the average to good level. Based on the tests, it can be concluded that the fourth semester students of English department study program FKIP universitas Riau Pekanbaru already were in average to good ability in past expression(complex sentence). Researcher recommended the students and other researchers to conduct similar research to get further information.Key Words: Ability, Past Expression, and Complex Sentences

Abstract

Abstract: The objective of this research is to identify the frequent translation techniques used by the translator in "Incredibles 2" movie. This research was a content analysis method as the research design. The data used in this research are the hard file subtitles from the "Incredibles 2" movie in both English and Indonesian subtitles. The researcher identifies half of the subtitles movie and uses translation techniques from Molina and Albir (2002). The researcher used four translation techniques from Molina and Albir (2002) for identifying the subtitles. They are amplification technique, borrowing technique, literal translation technique, and reduction technique. The data obtained by identified the subtitle, classified each data according to the translation technique, and calculated the percentage. The researcher found 459 data from 1147 data. The result shows that the frequent translation technique is literal translation technique with 181 data represent 39.43%. The other three translation techniques are amplification techniques with 45 data represents 9.80%, borrowing techniques with 107 data represents 23.31%, and reduction technique with 126 data represents 27.45%.Key Words: Translation Techniques, Subtitles, Content Analysis, Movie

Abstract

Abstract: This research belongs to descriptive research which used quantitative approach. It aimed to find out the level of grammar knowledge of the second year students of MTs Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru. The population of this research was the second year students of the school, while the number of populations was 265 students. Thirty one of them were the samples and selecting by cluster sampling technique. To collect the data, completion test was used as the instrument with the total number of items was fourty questions. It consist of verb to be, modal, singular and plural, demonstrative adjective, degree of comparison and simple present tense. The result of research shows that the mean score of students in grammar knowledge was 70.26 and it categorized into good level, and the most difficult component is degree of comparison with the mean score 65, and the easiest aspects is in term of verb to be with the mean score 77. In brief, the second year students have good ability in grammatical knowledge that has been learned in odd semester.Key Words: Students’ Ability, Grammar, Knowledge

Abstract

Abstract: This research was aimed to find out the correlation between reading habits of the third year English Study Program Students of Universitas Riau and their writing ability. The sample of this research was one of three classes of the third year students of the English Study Program that were chosen by using cluster random sampling technique. The population of this research was 36 students. There were two variables of data that were collected in this research: reading habits and writing ability. The reading habits data were gained by using a questionnaire and the writing ability data were collected from a writing test. The results revealed that the reading habits of the population was on ‘high’ level and their writing ability is classified as a good level. The results also showed that there is a significant correlation between reading habits and their writing ability. In conclusion, reading habits of students has a significant influence on students’ ability in writing.Key Words: Correlation, Reading Habits, Writing Ability

Abstract

Abstract: Translation in non-English speaking countries is important for communication between people with different cultures and languages. To acquire an accurate, clear and natural translation, a translator needs a what is called translation techniques which were proposed by Molina and Albir in 2002. It is a basis in a translation process, which is transferring a written text from the source language to target language. It is in fact the bottom line in this research is entitled „An Analysis of Translation Techniques Used in “The Little Prince” Movie‟s Indonesian Subtitle Text‟. In order to describe it, the writer used the descriptive qualitative approach. Besides, the writer also used the quantitative approach to compile the findings and presenting it in a table with the percentage of each technique‟s frequency. This research finds out there are 16 out of 18 techniques used in this subtitle and the most prominent technique used was the literal translation technique with a frequency of 299, or 28.23% of total data. While the least one was particularization technique which only occurred for 5 times (0.47% of total percentage). The writer also finds out that two of those techniques were not applied by the translator. These are on the ground that the writer could not identify any essential specifications of both techniques. Abstract

Abstract: this descriptive research is aimed to find out the awareness of reading strategies of the third semester students of English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau. The sample of this research is one of three classes of the second year students of English Study Program which were chosen by using cluster random sampling technique. The number of sample is 37 students. The data were collected by giving a set of questionnaire to the students individually. The questionnaire is about Survey of Reading Strategies (SORS) with 3 indicators is Global Reading Strategies (GLOB), Problem Solving Strategies (PROB), and Support Strategies (SUP). The students score were analyzed by using the frequency and percentages of each item. The results were divided into 3 categories. Then, the range of each category is found by using the formula as stated by Gay which is fall into 3 categories: high, moderate and lowest. The finding showed that more than half of the total number of the students have good ability in using a reading strategies. They are 26 students (70.27%) in moderate level. There are 9 students (24.32%) who are in high level and 2 students (5.40%) who are in low level. It can be concluded that the students’ ability in reading strategies is in good level. This study recommended the students to keep improve their ability, because there is no any limitation in developing the ability, so that it is better for the students to keep improved their ability.Key Words: Study, Ability, Reading, Strategies
