Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out the students’ dominant difficulties in translating an editorial text of The Jakarta Post. The subjects of this research were 30 seventh semester students of Education Study Program at Universitas Bengkulu in the academic year 2020/2021. This research used a quantitative descriptive method. The data were collected with a questionnaire and were counted in percentage terms. The results of this research showed that there were 5 students’ dominants difficulties in translating the editorial, i.e. a.)The difficulties in understanding unfamiliar words(60%), b.) The difficulties in understanding the texts although they understand the meaning of the words but they could not understand it coherently. Sometimes one sentence looked like disconnected with another sentence so it became odd (57%),c.)The difficulties in understanding the difficult sentences (47%), d.)The difficulties in translating the words that had multiple meanings which made it difficult for them to determine which meaning was correct and in understanding the ambiguous words (43%), and e.)The difficulties in translating phrases (43%). In conclusion, among all the dominant difficulties in translating the editorial the most dominant one was the difficulties in understanding unfamiliar words (60%). It was suggested that the undergraduate students should study lexicology and syntax intensively.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the dominant types of interruptions employed by participants and to find out the purposes of interruptions done by the participants of Ellen DeGeneres show. This research employed quantitative descriptive research. The subjects of this research were two of the most viewed videos uploaded from October-November 2020. The interruption employed by the participants and the purposes of interruptions done by the participants were classified using an instrument datasheet following Murata’s theory. The first results of this research show that interruptions types done by the participants of the Ellen DeGeneres show namely cooperative and intrusive, and the dominant types employed in the Ellen DeGeneres show was a cooperative interruption. The second result finding showed all that the purposes of interruptions done by the participants of the Ellen DeGeneres show namely agreement, assistance, clarification, disagreement, floor-taking, and tangentialization.

Abstract

This research is entitled Development of Digital Learning Media Based qr code (quick response) to improve the English Speaking Skills of English Language Education Study Program students FKIP Universitas Bengkulu. The population of this study is students in semester III (grades A and C) of the English language education study program FKIP UNIB. This is development research that produces digital learning media in academic speaking courses that use QR Code. There are a wide variety of QR shapes and colors used. The files included are videos, pdfs, and ms words.   The development of this teaching material uses a model ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation) developed by Dick and Carrey in 1996. The teaching materials developed are designed based on the syllabus used in this course. There are seven themes in this teaching material which are carried out for 14 meetings.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to use an inquiry-based learning paradigm to improve the writing skills of FKIP UNIB undergraduate English education students This is a three-cycle classroom action research study. The participants in this study were 39 third-semester students. There are 3 instruments used in collecting data, namely observation, checklist, and test. The results of the observations showed an increase in understanding of the application of inquiry-based learning models from cycles one, two, and three. While from the checklist, it was seen that there was an increase in student activity from the first cycle to the third or last cycle. from the third instrument used to see the progress of students' writing skills, it can be seen that in cycle one the average student scores are 75 and 79 at the end of cycle 2 and 83.5 in the last cycle. From the three instruments above, it can be concluded that this inquiry-based learning model can increase the writing skills of English Education Study Program third-semester students, FKIP UNIB.
