Abstract

Mathematical literacy is an important ability to be mastered, but the facts on the results of the PISA survey that Indonesia participated in showed the results of the low mathematical literacy ability of Indonesian students. To overcome the low literacy skills of students, it is necessary to know what students' errors are in solving mathematical literacy problems. This study aims to analyze the errors of junior high school students in solving mathematical literacy problems. The research used descriptive qualitative research methods. This research was conducted in 2 junior high schools in Tasikmalaya City which consisted of 1 middle level school and 1 high level school. The data in this study were obtained using a mathematical literacy test instrument on the SPLDV material given to 8th grade students. Error descriptions were obtained from analyzing the results of students' work in completing 6 levels of mathematical literacy problem. From the results of the analysis obtained problems that refer to level 1, students experience errors in building mathematical models. At level 2, students are wrong in determining the right mathematical concept to look for a number pattern that matches the given problem conditions. Problems at level 3, students are less skilled in modifying mathematical equations and do not fully understand the information presented in the questions. Problems at level 4, students find it difficult to make relevant assumptions in solving problems. At level 5 and 6 problems students are still not able to interpret every detail of information correctly and the use of mathematical concepts that are less relevant to the core of the problem. Keywords: Student error, Mathematical Literacy, SPLDV

Abstract

Abstract

Mathematical problem solving abilities (KPMM) are important for junior high school students. The Metacognitive Guidance (MG) approach can be an alternative to improve KPPM. The method used in this research is a quasi-experimental design with a nonequivalent control group design. The population in this study were all students of class VIII SMP Negeri 1 Bandung. Then two classes were taken using purposive sampling technique as the sample. The instrument used was the KPMM test. The results showed that there was a significant increase in the mathematical problem solving abilities of students who took the MG approach learning compared to students who took conventional learning. Then based on the students' initial mathematical abilities, the results showed that at the initial high and moderate mathematical problem solving abilities of students who took the MG approach learning was better than students who took conventional learning, whereas in students the initial mathematical abilities were low there was no difference in increasing problem solving abilities mathematical significance who follow the MG approach learning compared with students who take conventional learning.

Abstract

The mystery of numbers that were considered to have a role in the mystical dimension has long been practiced since the time of Pythagoras, then known as numerology. Some people in Sundanese tradition believe that numerology brings a lucky influence on their lives and generations. This study aims to reveal how the Sundanese tradition of naming their newborn babies and conduct a phenomenological study on several respondents with unique experiences related to Sundanese numerology in their names. The phenomenon experienced by respondents is seen from the point of view of cultural anthropology. This research was designed using qualitative methods through two approaches, ethnomathematics and phenomenology. Respondents were selected using purposive sampling and snowball methods and obtained 25 respondents scattered around the districts of Ciamis, Banjar, Tasikmalaya, and Garut in West Java. All respondents are expert resources as cultural practitioners in their own culture who can explain the numerology system they used, known as Kasepuhan. The results of the study show that there are many different numerological methods for calculating "lucky names" in the Sundanese tradition that depend on the epistemology of the science of Kasepuhan in their own culture. Most of the calculations involve the concept of integer (modular) operations where each ‘reminder’ represents its own philosophical meaning. Although mathematically the methods of calculating “lucky names” can be learned by everyone, the practice of these calculations is in fact only carried out by people who are considered to have been established from the aspect of science. This article discusses why the mystical phenomenon behind the numerology of the Sundanese tradition cannot be calculated arbitrarily by anyone, people trust more in the numerology calculations performed by Kasepuhan.
