Abstract

ABSTRACTBackground: Temporomandibular disorder is a temporomandibular joint disturbance characterized with the pain in masticatory muscle and TMJ; clicking in TMJ; and deflection, deviation pattern with limitation in opening of the mouth. TMD can be found in adolescents with prevalence and severity increased along with the age. TMD in adolescent was caused by the increased of the masticatory muscle activity. In adolescent, it was caused by the increase of the emotional state especially stress. Stress is a condition that often experienced by every people including orphaned adolescent, who has more problems than the other adolescent. Purpose: The aim of this study was to analyze the correlation between stress and temporomandibular disorder in orphaned adolescent in Banjarmasin. Method: This study is an analytical observational research with cross sectional design. The study was involving 13-18 years old orphaned adolescents in Banjarmasin with purposive sampling. This study is using PSS for stress examination and RDC/TMD for TMD examination. The correlation between stress and TMD were analyzed with Spearman analysis test. Results: This research showed that 61% of the subject had moderate stress level and TMD was found in 68.3% of the subject, which consists of 58.5% had myofascial pain and 9.8% had disc displacement. Spearman analysis test showed that there is statistical correlation between stress and temporomandibular disorder in orphaned adolescent in Banjarmasin (p<0.05). Conclusion: There is a correlation between stress and temporomandibular disorder in orphaned adolescent in Banjarmasin. Keywords: Myofascial Pain, Stress, Temporomandibular disorder (TMD).

Abstract

Background: Caries can be caused by a lack of individual knowledge about dental health and attitudes to pay attention to dental hygiene. Parents have the most important role in determining the personality, habits and behavior of the child in taking care of the teeth and mouth. Every action taken by the parents will have an influence on the character of the child. Parents who provide a positive parenting pattern to their child, will form good personality, habits and behavior towards the child. But on the contrary, parents who are less attentive and do not care will form negative personalities, habits and behaviors.  Purpose: To find out relationship of parents role to caries incident in adolescents at Sungai Loban Subdistrict. Methods: This study used an observational analytic method in the form of cross-sectional research and a simple random sampling technique. The research population was grade VII students at SMP Negeri 1 Sungai Loban as many as 63 respondents. Results: The Spearman test obtained significant score results of 0.000<0.05 which means there is a correlation between the role of parents to the incidence of caries in children. The correlation value is  – 0.927 and includes a very strong correlation in the negative direction (-), it can be interpreted that the relationship is opposite or if the child's caries is high then the role of parents tends to be low. Conclusion: There is a relationship of parents role to caries incident in adolescents.

Abstract

Background: Psychosocial is defined as a condition that occurs in individuals that can be seen from their behavior and influenced by the emotional development, personality, and individual social relationship. One of the factors that can affect psychosocial is the state of the teeth. The condition of misalignment teeth can have a psychosocial impact, especially adolescents. A person who has misalignment teeth should have orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic treatment can improve his psychosocial health condition. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze differences in the psychosocial status of adolescents who did and did not undergo orthodontic treatment. Method: This study used an observational analytic method with a cross sectional approach. The sample size was calculated using the Slovin formula. The study was conducted at SMAN 2 Banjarmasin with a total sample of 93 students consisting of 27 students who did orthodontic treatment and 66 students who did not undergo orthodontic treatment. Data collection using a preliminary survey and PIDAQ questionnaire. Data analysis consisted of univariate analysis to describe the characteristics of each variable and bivariate analysis to see the difference between in the mean of the two groups of subjects using the Independent T Test. Results: The psychosocial status of adolescents who did orthodontic treatment is moderate with an average PIDAQ score is 50.6. The psychosocial status of adolescents who did not undergo orthodontic treatment is moderate with an average PIDAQ score is 45.8. Conclusion: There is no difference in psychosocial status between adolescents who did and did not undergo orthodontic treatment.

Abstract

Background: Dental and oral health is inseparable. Dental health problems can affect the growth and the development of children. Dental caries or cavity is one of the dental health problems that often find in children. The knowledge of mother on certain things underlies the formation of behavior that supports oral health in children. A mother is the closest person to child that holds a significant role to guide, educate, remind, and facilities children’s need for oral and dental health. Purpose: This research aims to analyze the relationship between maternal knowledge about dental health and the severity of caries in children in Barito Kuala Regency. Methods: This research is an observational analytic cross-sectional study. The number of samples was 32 respondents with random sampling. Data collection techniques used primary data in mothers and students of Nusa Indah Berangas Kindergarten, Alalak  SubDistrict. The measurement of knowledge level used a questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability while the measurement of caries severity was based on def-t index. Result:  Results of Spearman test showed (p <0.05) the direction of positive correlation. The worse the level of knowledge, the higher the severity of caries. The correlation coefficient was 0.599 (medium correlation strength). Conclusion: There is a correlation between maternal knowledge about dental health and the severity of caries in children aged 4-5 years at the Nusa Indah Berangas Kindergarten, Alalak SubDistrict, Barito Kuala Regency.

Abstract

ABSTRACTBackground: Smile is one of the aesthetic components that contribute to person's attractiveness. The aesthetic smile is obtained from orthodontic treatment. The standard of orthodontic aesthetic smile is from the evaluation between smile arch and lower lip border, number of gaps, and amount of gingival, when smiling. Aesthetic concepts can be different because of perception. The difference in perception may be generated by a variety of variables. One of which is educational background. Purpose: This study aims to analyze the difference in perception of the aesthetic smile between dentistry students and economic business students at Lambung Mangkurat University. Method: This study used an analytic observational method with a cross-sectional approach. The sample was calculated using the Slovin formula and obtained 88 respondents who were taken using a simple random sampling technique. The questionnaire was measured on an ordinal scale using a visual analogue scale from 0-100. Before being distributed to respondents, the questionnaire was first tested for validity and reliability. Then, the results were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney test. Results: The significance of the Mann-Whitney test obtained a consonant smile of 0.000; a narrow buccal corridor of 0,000; a gingival display of a non-gummy smile of 0.006, and a symmetrical smile of 0.000. The four variables had a significance value of less than 0.05. It means that there was a difference between the two groups. Conclusion: There is a difference in perception of an aesthetic smile between dentistry students and economic business students at Lambung Mangkurat University. Keywords: Aesthetic Smile, College Student Perceptions, Smile Perceptions

Abstract

Background: Teenagers experience an increase of caries rate every year, such as the rate of 4.9 in 2013 increased to 7.2 in 2018. The caries rate by female teenagers tends to be higher than the male's rate of 7.2 in number. Adolescents, especially female teenagers, have a high sensitivity to the perfection of their physical appearance and attractiveness so that the high caries rate can be a negative influence on their quality of  life. Purpose: To analyze the relationship between the severity of caries and the quality of life teenage girls in female orphanages in Banjarmasin. Methods: The method that was used in this study was observational analytic with the implementation of a cross sectional approach. The samples were taken by using simple random sampling techniques with a cross sectional sample formula being applied, obtaining 42 respondents. The data were collected by using the DMF-T index measurement instrument and the Indonesian version of COHIP-SF 19 questionnaire which had been tested for validity and reliability tests. Results: The results of Rank-Spearman test data analysis obtained the significant value of 0.000 (p<0.05) which means the level of dental caries of teenage girls in the orphanages with their quality of life related to dental and oral health had a significant relation, the correlation value that was obtained was 0.531, which means the strength of the correlation was strong toward the positive direction correlation (unidirectional). Conclusion: There is a correlation between the severity of dental caries and the quality of life of teenage girls in the orphanages. Keywords : Caries, orphanage, quality of life, teenage girl
