Abstract

Abstract

The covid-19 pandemic has been increasing people's awareness of good eating habits and consumption to maintain their health. Accordingly, the choice shifted more to consume nutraceutical and functional food to provide a beneficial impact. One of the essential and attractive nutraceuticals is squalene (C30H50). Squalene is a precursor for biosynthesis in all human steroids and has a long history as an essential compound in the pharmaceutical industry. A common source of this terpenoid comes from the liver oil of a deep-sea shark. However, the strategy for squalene production from liver sharks encountered environmental and political barriers due to strict nature protection regulations. The renewed scientific interest has found microalgae from the thraustochytrids family as a promising future source of squalene. Thraustochytrids is a group of Osmo-heterotrophic marine microalgae, which can be found commonly in mangrove are, has recently gained increased attention owing to its promising biotechnological potentials. As the country with the largest mangrove forest globally, Indonesia has the highest biodiversity potentials of Thraustochytrids. Unfortunately, the study on the potential of bioprocess technology using Thraustochytrids microalgae from Indonesian mangrove forests for squalene production has received less attention from researchers. Therefore, this paper presents Thraustochytrids' potential from Indonesian mangrove forests as a sustainable source of squalene production that can replace raw material from shark liver oil. This paper summarizes all selected strains used in the previous study and their operating parameters. Based on our review study, the most productive Thraustochytrid producing squalene comes from the Aurantiochytrium sp. 18W-13a–1, which operated in a temperature-controlled reciprocal 500 mL shaker of Sakaguchi flask (25 °C, 100 strokes min − 1,70 mm amplitude) and used nutrients of 2.0% glucose, 1.0% tryptone, 0.5 g /l yeast, and 50% artificial seawater (ASW). Compared to squalene from other sources (yeast, bacteria, and plants), Thraustochytrid can yield more squalene. Bioprocess engineering aspects and the general uses of squalene are also presented, including the notable developments in the adjuvant vaccine of Covid-19, anti-aging substance, and anti-cancer applications.

Abstract

Indonesia is rich in flora diversity, very potential for the development of natural dyes. The advantage of dyeing fabrics with natural dyes is that they contain antioxidants and environmentally friendly. The purpose of this study was to optimize the dyeing process on chitosan-modified fabrics with variations in temperature and solution ratio. The dyes used were kesumba keling seeds (Bixa Orellana) and sappan wood (Caesalpinia sappan). The analysis carried out is the analysis of the value of color differences (DE), calculated to determine changes in color intensity. The dyed fabrics were tested for fastness to light, heat, and washing. The best value of DE was obtained at a temperature variation of 70 oC and a ratio of fabric weight to volume of solution 1:75 for both dyes from kesumba keling seeds and sappan wood with each DE value of 6.22 and 11.84. Supported by the test results of fastness to sunlight and iron heat which gives good results.

Abstract

UV radiation from the sun that constantly exposes the skin can cause skin damage such as sunburn and skin cancer. The damage from UV can be reduced by clothing. Increasing UV protection on cotton fabric can be done by adding UV absorbers. The effect of type, treatment, and concentration of UV absorber on cotton dyed with phenoxazine natural dyes from Peristrophe bivalvis was studied. Two types of UV absorber were used, benzophenone and benzotriazole. Concentrations of UV absorber used in this study ranging from 5% to 15% on weight of fabric applied on three treatments, before dyeing, after dyeing, and both. UV protection on the cotton fabric was expressed by the UV Protection Factor (UPF) value. Lightfastness, washing fastness and rubbing fastness were also performed using grayscale. The use of UV absorbers increases the UPF value of dyed cotton by before and after dyeing treatment. The best UPF value was achieved by adding benzotriazole with a concentration of 15% by before and after treatment resulting in a UPF value of 5.45. The results of light fastness, washing fastness, and rubbing fastness ware also improved by the addition of UV absorber.

Abstract

Batik has become a cultural heritage that has been recognized internationally by UNESCO. Indonesian batik has been known worldwide, even the president of the Republic of Indonesia has set October 2 as the national batik day. This should be a matter of pride for the people of Indonesia, especially Yogyakarta, which has a batik culture. The pride of the batik culture that has been recognized by the world must be owned by the Indonesian people as a whole. Not only to adults but also to children. Unfortunately, in this globalization and modern era, children, especially in the Semaki and Kotagede sub-districts, are more interested in modern culture than batik. The development of technology has given a considerable influence on children in the current era of globalization. Children are more interested in playing gadgets than making batik. The complicated process of making batik becomes less attractive to the younger generation. This community service program is carried out in the form of collaborative learning with the theme Project based learning in fostering a love of batik from an early age through written batik training with natural dyes for children. The purpose of this PPM is to provide knowledge and understanding to students and children about how to make batik with natural dyes. By knowing and understanding how to make batik, it is hoped that children in the Semaki and Purbayan sub-districts will be interested in batik culture and will develop a sense of love and pride in the batik culture that has become a legacy of their ancestors. The method of this service activity consists of socialization, debriefing, natural dye testing, written batik training, natural dye training, evaluation, and reporting. This activity will be held from 21 to 26 December 2021 in Semaki and Purbayan villages. This activity has succeeded in increasing the knowledge and understanding of participants, both students and children. Students' understanding of batik skills increased from 27% to 100% while students' natural coloring skills increased from 12% to 100%. The understanding of the children also experienced a significant increase. The children's batik skills increased from 25% and 7.5% to 100% being able to make batik. While natural coloring skills increased from 4% and 0% to 100%.

Abstract

We often find food waste daily, especially on household and restaurant scales. Using food waste for helpful something, biogas is an alternative to reduce wasted waste and produce renewable energy. The anaerobic digestion process is a process that decomposes organic material into biogas with the help of microorganisms in conditions without oxygen. Adding nutrients in the anaerobic digestion process can positively affect biogas-producing microorganisms. One of the nutrients or nutrients studied this time is Ca and K. The provision of nutrient Ca has a positive effect, namely a significant increase in biogas production compared to without the addition of nutrients. However, adding K does not positively impact biogas production is inhibited. Excessive amounts of nutrient K can inhibit the process by inhibiting microorganisms in breaking down intermediate products into biogas. The largest volume of biogas produced for five days came from the reactor with the addition of nutrient Ca, which was 15072 cm3, while the control reactor and reactor with the addition of nutrient K produced biogas of 1648.5 cm3 and 15.7 cm3. The addition of nutrient Ca increases biogas production more than nine times.

Abstract

Public awareness of the dangers of using synthetic dyes has started to boost the prestige of natural dyes. The limitation of natural dyes is one of the causes of the limited use of natural dyes commercially. This research utilized purple sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) as a source of anthocyanins. The purpose of this study was the stabilization of anthocyanins from purple sweet potato through the co-pigmentation process. The first stage is the extraction of natural anthocyanin dyes from purple sweet potatoes using the microwave-assisted method, then stabilization of anthocyanins through a co-pigmentation process with variations in the addition of arabic gum, Fe-Alginate, and catechins at various concentrations as Total Anthocyanin Content (TAC), and stability test. The higher the concentration value of the co-pigmenting agent added to the extract, the higher the color shift, indicated by a decrease in the TAC value. The best copigmentation was obtained with green tea containing catechin concentration of 0.01 ml green tea/20 ml extract. with a TAC value of 0.1499 mg/L. Stabilization test against storage, co-pigmentation with catechins in green tea gave the best stability. While the stability against heating and oxidation, co-pigmentation with gum arabic will stabilize the condition of anthocyanin extracts.
