Abstract

ABSTRACTBackground: Neonatal sepsis is one of major cause of neonatal death in developing countries. Blood culture is gold standard to diagnose sepsis neonatorum, but it needed 3-5 days for the result. Early diagnostic and approriate treatment can reduce the mortality and morbidity of patients. Immature to total neutrophil ratio (I/T ratio) can be used as early marker for diagnosis of neonatal sepsis. Objective: This study aimed to know I/T ratio of suspected neonatal sepsis treated in the Neonatal Unit of Arifin Achmad General Hospital of Riau Province. Methods: This is study was conducted using descriptive retrospective methods during February 2015. The sample were collected by consecutive sampling. Results: We found that 97 suspected neonatal sepsis, 81,5% of whom were 0-6 days old, 56,7% were males, and 48,5% had gestational age < 37 weeks. Late onset sepsis was the highest classification of sepsis at 80% from 30 cases of neonatal sepsis. Immature to total neutrophil ratio on suspected neonatal sepsis was ≥ 0,2 (50,5%) with a median value is 0,2.Conclusion: There was a increased I/T ratio on suspected neonatal sepsis. Keywords: sepsis, neonate, I/T ratio

Abstract

Ovarian tumor caused by inflammation or proliferation of ovarian’s ephitelial, germinal, stroma cell and it can be benign and malignant. Ovarian tumor had many tumor markers, the most known is Cancer Antigen 125 (CA-125). The normal concentration of CA-125 is <35 IU/ml. CA-125 could be used to predict a malignancy with cut off value ≥35 IU/ml. However, some benign conditions can be found with value ≥35 IU/ml, and some malignancy conditions with normal CA-125 concentration. The purpose of this research was to know correlation between CA-125 with the ovarians tumor malignancy and cell type. This research used retrospective design which involving 206 samples. The characteristic and cell type was based on histopathologycal examination and the value of CA-125 was based on clinical pathology laboratory test result. From 136 patients with benign ovarian tumor, 80 (57,5%) with CA-125 was still in normal limit and 59 (42,5%) was increased. From 67 patients with malignant ovarian tumor, 23 (34,3%) with CA-125 was still in normal limit and 44 (65,7%) was increased. This research showed there was a significant correlation between tumor marker CA-125 with the ovarians tumor malignancy (p =0,002), ephitelial cell type (p=0,001), and germinal cell type (p=0,001).Key words : ovarian tumor, ovarian tumor marker, Cancer Antigen 125, ovarian tumors malignancy and cell type

Abstract

Neonatal sepsis is a collection of clinical symptoms and laboratory associated with infection due to the invasion of microorganisms during the first 28 days of a child's life time. The certain diagnosis of neonatal sepsis is the isolation of bacteria from blood or body fluids. However, this method takes at least 72 hours. Therefore, It is necessary an investigation with a relatively short time. One of methods is C-Reactive Protein (CRP) examination. Even though CRP examination has been done in many of diagnosis of sepsis, however this examination also has some limitations. This research designusing a diagnostic test with retrospective approach. The sampling technique is performed by consecutive sampling method and amount of sample is 313 people. The results showed that the characteristics of the neonatal sepsis suspect in accordance with age is early neonatal (0-6 h), which amount to 235 (75%), and majority is male by 182 (58%). The most risk factor for gestational age <37 weeks is 133 samples with a median value is 11.4 mg / dl. Late Onset Neonatal Sepsis (LONS) is the highest classification of sepsis group at 93 (82%) with a median value is 192 mg/dl. The diagnostic value of CRP examination are sensitivity 65.7%, specificity 79.3%, positive predictive value 64.6%, negative predictive value 80.2%, positive contingency ratio 3.25, negative contingency ratio 0.43 and accuracy of 74.4%. As the result, we obtain cut off the recommended point is ≥10,2 mg / dl.Keywords : sepsis, C-Reactive Protein (CRP), LONS

Abstract

Vegetarian diet has many benefits, especially in the field of health, suchas, lowering the risk for diabetes mellitus and obesity. Research has also shownthat vegetarians have a body mass index lower than non-vegetarians. However, high carbohydrate consumption, and several types of vegetarians who stillconsume milk in excessive amounts, can contribute to blood glucose levels. Thisdiet can affect nutritional status too. In addition, age can also affect nutritionalstatus, by increasing of age, the body composition will be changed and metabolicrate will be decreased. This study was aimed to determine the correlation betweenage, BMI , and fasting blood glucose levels in adult vegetarian community inPekanbaru . This is a correlative study with cross sectional design. The dataincluded the age, type and duration of being a vegetarian, BMI, and fasting bloodglucoselevels . The samples were taken by purposive sampling technique with 32people who met the inclusions criteria. The results of this study indicate that therewere no different of BMI (p= 0.734), and fasting blood glucose levels ( p = 0.804)between vegans and non - vegans .This study also showed that there was nosignificant correlation between age and fasting blood glucose levels in adultvegetarian community (r= 0,075; p=0,682). In addition , the results showed thatthere was no significant correlation between BMI and fasting blood glucose levels(p=0.414; r=0.149 ) in the adult vegetarian community. There was no significantcorrelation between BMI and fasting blood sugar levels in the vegan group(p=0.793; r= -0.207 ) and the non- vegan (p=0.394; r=0.184) in adult vegetariancommunity in Pekanbaru .Key words :Vegetarian,Vegan, Non-vegan, Body Mass Index (BMI), FastingBloodGlucose Levels

Abstract

Anemia in teenagers is mostly caused by low intake of nutrients, required for hemoglobin formation, that are iron (Fe), vitamin C and copper. Iron is needed to form heme part of hemoglobin, vitamin C is essential for hemoglobin formation and copper is required for iron absorption in the gastrointestinal tract. This study analytically conducted with cross-sectional study approach. Dietary iron, vitamin C and copper intakes were assessed using semi-quantitative Food Frequency Questioner (FFQ) forms, then daily consumption mean was assessed and processed using Nutrisurvey programme. Hemoglobin levels was measured by spectrophotometry using cyanmethemoglobin method. Samples of this study are 80 students that fulfilled the inclusion criteria. This study showed that 62,5% samples who had low intake of iron had hemoglobin levels of 52,5% normal, 10% anemia and 0% polycythemia. Around 53,75% samples that had low vitamin C intake had hemoglobin levels of 7,5% anemia, 46,25% normal and 0% polycythemia. Around 81,25% samples that had high copper intake had hemoglobin levels of 11,25% anemia, 70% normal and 0% polycythemia. In general, there is no significant correlation (p>0,05) between dietary iron, vitamin C and copper intakes towards hemoglobin levels in students class of 2014 at Faculty of Medicine, University of Riau.Key words: Iron intake, vitamin C, copper, hemoglobin levels

Abstract

In the case of violent crimes such as murder, assault and rape, it is possible to find biological fluids such as blood spots at the crime scene . Blood spots contained two components, such as cellular component consisting of erythrocytes, leukocytes, platelets and plasma components. Erythrocytes contained hemoglobin that contain iron atom (Fe). Iron atom in heme would be reduced from Fe2+ to Fe 3+ due to reaction with oxygen. Alteration of Fe2+ to Fe3+ can be analyze by using infrared spectrophotometric. This study aims to determine the change in the value of % T in human bloodstains on cotton cloth functional groups contained in the molecule Fe-O. This study is experimental. Samples were white cotton cloth soaked in human blood. To see the correlation of % T with the age of bloodstains on cotton cloth used Pearson correlation test. The results show that no correlation was found from persenttransmitance Fe-O with age human bloodstain on cotton cloth using infra red spectrophotometry.Keyword : Persenttransmitance Fe-O, bloodstain
