This research used a qualitative approach with a case study research type and descriptive using primary and secondary data from ten informants in the engineering study program. The research results show that lecturer performance assessment management has three main tasks, namely education, research and community service. The development of a university is largely determined by the quality of the human resources. Lecturer performance plays a very important role in improving the academic quality of higher education as the main pillar in the education and teaching process, as well as playing a role in research and scientific development. Stages of lecturer performance (ability to design learning/RPS, mastery of courses, methods). Stages of education quality (process, infrastructure, learning media, activities in learning). Research publications and PKM were routine in conducting research and publications, where research publications contribute the development of science and support the growth of knowledge in the field of study. It can be concluded that a lecturer is required to perform optimally so as to create professional and high-quality productivity results on the lecturer's performance as seen from the output, namely quality graduates, the success of alumni reflects the quality of education received by the lecturer. As a recommendation for lecturers to improve the academic reputation quality of the institution and help strengthen scientific contributions in publications.

Abstract

Abstract

The competency of a lecturer is required for a successful learning process that leads to increased student accomplishment. The present study investigates (1) the profile of students' writing skills at the Port Shipping Management Department of Polytechnic of Makassar Merchant Marine (PIP) through a writing test, and (2) the influence of lecturers' personal and social competence on students' writing proficiency in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom settings using qualitative data. The study employed purposive sampling to select 3 lecturers and 30 second-semester students from the Port Shipping Management Department of PIP. Quantitative data were collected through a writing test administered to the 30 students, while qualitative data were gathered using semi-structured interviews with the 5 lecturers, focus group discussions with the students, and classroom observations. The findings revealed various levels of writing proficiency among PIP students and highlighted the positive impact of lecturers' personal and social competence on students' writing proficiency. The better the personal influence and social competence of the lecturers, the better the students' writing capabilities are. The study emphasizes the need for continued development of lecturers' personal and social competence to foster a supportive and engaging learning environment in maritime education and training.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out how students’ perceptions of translanguaging practices in EFL classroom. This study used a qualitative research approach. The data for this study was gathered through interviews using a qualitative descriptive method. The interview process was conducted with five students from class IX.2 SMPN 4 Bulukumba. The findings showed that students believed translanguaging makes them learn English more easily, feel comfortable in class, communicate with the teacher effectively, be more interested in learning, and add new vocabulary. Some students explained that they experienced difficulty during the use of translanguaging by the teacher, but most of them realized the importance of translanguaging in developing their English skills. Based on the results of the research, it can be concluded that the implementation of translanguaging has a positive impact in the process of teaching and learning English in EFL classroom. So, for English teachers, it is recommended to use translanguaging in classes where students’ English ability is still low with the aim that students can understand the material better, create a supportive environment, and encourage students to be active in class. Therefore, the use of translanguaging should be balanced and not replace the use of English as a whole.

Abstract

Effective English communication is vital in the global maritime industry. Maritime English, a branch of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), addresses the needs of maritime professionals. Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) uses real-life scenarios, making it ideal for vocational training. This means practicing real shipboard situations for maritime cadets, leading to effective learning. This study investigates the effectiveness of Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) on cadets’ speaking skills when learning English for Specific Purposes (ESP) instructional materials. The study applied a quasi-experimental method with a nonequivalent group design, involving 48 cadets from the deck study program at the Merchant Marine Polytechnic of Makassar, Indonesia. The results indicate a significant improvement in the pretest-posttest scores, analyzed using a statistical test with the prerequisite data being normally distributed. The hypothesis test results, with a significance value of 0.000, confirm that there were differences in the speaking skills of the cadets at the Merchant Marine Polytechnic of Makassar after applying the CTL model in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) instructional materials. The findings highlight that the CTL model positively impacts and optimally influences the teaching and learning process in speaking skills when cadets learn ESP materials. This approach increases cadets' confidence and encourages them to be active learners based on their real experiences.

Abstract

The rapid growth of online instruction has significantly transformed education, particularly in the 5.0 society development era. This study investigates the online reading strategies and comprehension skills of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners, aiming to better understand how students approach online texts and the challenges they encounter. Using a qualitative case study design, fifteen EFL students were selected through purposive sampling. Data were gathered through observations and semi-structured interviews to identify the reading strategies employed by these learners in an online environment. The results revealed that EFL learners used various effective strategies to engage meaningfully with online materials. However, notable differences in reading strategies were observed based on individual preferences, leading to diverse outcomes in comprehension. These variations highlight the challenges some students face in understanding online content, emphasizing the need for more personalized approaches in online reading instruction. The study suggests that while EFL learners can apply appropriate online reading strategies, their effectiveness depends on individual reading preferences and comprehension levels. Consequently, educators should address these differences by designing flexible and adaptable reading lessons. The integration of both basic and more advanced strategies is essential to support all learners in navigating online texts effectively.
