Abstract

The purpose of this study is to measure the difficulty level of the English semester test items for the tenth grade students at SMA N 3 Jambi City in the academic year 2016/2017. The sample is 40 students of tenth grade science two and taken by random sampling with lottery. This study is conducted to analyze the test items whether it is conclude in easy, moderate, or difficult items. This study is categorized in mix method research, those are quantitative and qualitative. The instrument used in this study is documentation. The researcher take 40 students’ answer sheets as the data that will be counted how many respondents can answer of each item and has been counted by using formula. The research find that there are 35 items in easy level, 2 items in moderate level, and 3 items in difficult items. And all the items can be said in easy level with the result 0,85 index of difficulty. The researcher also find that there are 12 valid items, and 28 invalid items.Keywords: English Semester Test, Item Analysis, Difficulty Level.

Abstract

AbstractThe objective of this study was to find out the influence of learning motivation towards English learning achievement. This study involved 269 students of eleventh grade, the sample was 40 students of eleventh grade science six at SMA N 3 Jambi City academic year 2017/2018 and taken by random sampling with lottery. There were two variables in this study, they were learning motivation and English learning achievement with 6 total indicators. The method of this study was survey method of quantitative research. Instrument used in this study was questionnaire and documentation. The research found that mean of students motivation from the questionnaire was valued 81,6 in good category. From the findings, it showed that there was no significant influence of learning motivation towards English learning achievement. Based on the analysis of data, the value of tcount is -0,052 ˂ ttable 2,024 in significance 0,025 line 38 counted by SPSS for Windows Version 16.Keywords: Learning motivation, English learning achievement

Abstract

This research is to analyze the learner’s needs of English for Specific Purpose (ESP) at SMK N 1 Betara especially in engineering program because English is important for students. In English for Specific Purpose (ESP), English is taught to meet the English needs in area of specialization. The needs in area of specialization are worth considering since the language we speak and write varies from one context to another. The purpose of this researcher wants to examine the learner’s needs of English for Specific Purpose (ESP). This research applied a mixed-method. The combination of both quantitative and qualitative research targeted students of SMK N 1 Betara in engineering program especially in tenth grade with 31 participants. The result of this research in students’ English language course preferences 41,9 % want to learn English accordance with the material they need in engineering. In students’ results regarding the language aspects of the English language course, more than half of students (61,3 %) want to learn English more specific, it means they wanted English lesson associated with their department of engineering that can be useful as in the job.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the language learning strategies that students used and to observe their achievement based on the strategies at second grade on SMAN 8 Kota Jambi Academic Year 2018/2019. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The sample of this research is XI IPS 1 consists of 36 students, in order to get the sample in this research by using simple random sampling. The data are collected by using questionnaire adapted from Oxford (1990) and documentation from English teacher. The result of this research showed that there are very high students and high students in using language learning strategies. Based on the data, the most frequency strategies that students used are metacognitive strategies are used by 13 students (36%) with the average score very high (84,3), affective strategies are used by 9 students (25%) with the average score very high (84,1),social strategies are used by 6 students (17%) with the average score very high (82,2), and cognitive strategies are used by 3 students (8%) with the average score high (78,5), while the lowest frequency strategies that students used are memory strategies used by 4 students (11%) with the average score very high (81,6). Lastly, compensation strategies are used by 1 student (3) with the score high (78).Keywords: Learning Strategies, Achievement.
