: A mobile application, Tflat English Pronunciation, is proposed in the teaching of pronunciation for it possesses features that can assist students when learning how to enunciate English words and identify English phonemic symbols. Thus, this study presents the results of the implementation of Tflat English Pronunciation mobile courseware to gain the ability of the first semester students of English Study Program Politeknik Negeri Jember in pronouncing English words. This study is a collaborative classroom action research. Thirty students enrolling in Pronunciation class at English Study Program Politeknik Negeri Jember were taken as the source of data. The result showed that the materials and practices in Tflat courseware could enrich students' pronunciation learning, improve their participation, and nurture a positive attitude toward technological learning. The findings of this study also depict the potential and power of Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) to encourage students to engage in classroom activities and monitor their learning. Hence, it can be concluded that MALL is pivotal and can be one alternative to facilitate students’ pronunciation learning.

Language Variation in Lexical Variables of Madurese Terms of Address Used by Youths in Bondowoso Regency: A Sociolinguistic Investigation Alfi Hidayatu Miqawati

This study attempts to investigate the usage of address terms among youths (university students) across a range of situations in Bondowoso. A qualitative method with an ethnographic approach was deployed. Fifteen most representative students were taken as the source of data. The data were obtained through participatory and non-participatory observation interviews, and a questionnaire. The findings show that the students employ different terms of address, both when they address people and when they address themselves for others. The ways of addressing other people used are based on their age, social or educational status, and or their kinship relationship. The terms to address others and to address themselves for others are classified into four levels; the least polite, polite, more polite, and the most polite. They use be’na or be’en, sampeyan/sampiyan, panjenengan, ajunan to address others and engkok/sengkok, kaule, dhalem, and abdina to address themselves to others. In addition, the lexical variation occuring when they address people using the least polite way is based on their geographical distribution. From the findings, it can be concluded that politeness strategy in terms of address among youths in Bondowoso exists and its implementation varies depending on their interlocutors (social) and the subdistricts where they live (geographical. ABSTRAKBahasa Inggris menjadi salah satu keterampilan yang harus dikuasai oleh mahasiswa agar dapat terjun ke dunia kerja global. Banyak perusahaan mensyaratkan penguasaan bahasa asing, salah satunya adalah bahasa Inggris. Untuk menjawab tantangan tersebut, Politeknik Negeri Jember (Polije) mengadakan uji kompetensi bahasa Inggris Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) untuk mahasiswa tingkat akhir sebagai salah satu syarat kelulusan. Namun, permasalahan utama yang dihadapi mahasiswa yang akan mengikuti tes tersebut adalah mereka belum mengetahui TOEIC. Tujuan dari kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini adalah untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan mitra tentang TOEIC melalui sosialisasi dan pelatihan TOEIC yang melibatkan 65 mahasiswa Polije. Hasil dari pelatihan TOEIC menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa dapat (1) meningkatkan pemahaman tentang TOEIC, (2) mengimplementasikan strategi yang sesuai dalam mengerjakan soal TOEIC, (3) dapat meningkatkan kemampuan Bahasa Inggris mereka. Kegiatan serupa direkomendasikan melibatkan lebih banyak mahasiswa di lingkungan Polije agar mahasiswa Polije lebih siap mengikuti uji kompetensi bahasa Inggris dan bersaing di dunia global. Kata kunci: pelatihan; TOEIC; komunikasi; keterampilan; bahasa inggris. ABSTRACTEnglish is one of the skills that must be mastered by students in order to enter the global world of work. Many companies require mastery of foreign languages, one of which is English. To answer this challenge, Politeknik Negeri Jember (Polije) held an English competency test; Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) for senior students as one of their graduation requirements. However, the main problem faced by students who took the test was that they knew nothing about TOEIC. The purpose of this community service activity was to improve the students’ knowledge about TOEIC through TOEIC socialization and training, which involved 65 students. The results of the TOEIC training showed that the students could (1) improve their understanding about TOEIC, (2) implement appropriate strategies in working on TOEIC questions, (3) improve their English skills. Similar activities are recommended by involving more students in Polije so that students of Polije are better prepared to take the English language competency test and compete in the global world..Keywords: training; TOEIC; communication; skills; english.

ABSTRAKPengabdian kepada masyarakat merupakan salah satu Tridharma perguruan tinggi yang wajib dilakukan oleh dosen. Kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PkM) ini dilaksanakan di salah satu UMKM, Kedai Nyosoe Cak Nanang, yang terletak di Desa Kemuning Lor Jember. Kedai ini memiliki produk andalan susu murni segar dan olahannya seperti susu rasa-rasa, milkshake, dan yogurt Letak kedai ini sangat strategis karena berada di wilayah rekreasi Rembangan. Namun, masih banyak masyarakat yang belum mengetahui produk kedai tersebut karena minimnya media promosi dan pengelola memiliki pengetahuan terbatas terkait promosi produk. Tujuan dari kegiatan PkM ini adalah untuk memberikan sosialisasi tentang media promosi dan mengembangkan booklet sebagai media promosi Kedai Nyosose Cak Nanang. Metode yang dilakukan untuk mengatasi masalah adalah sosialisasi dan penyusunan media promosi untuk kedai tersebut. Berdasarkan hasil yang dilakukan selama pelaksanaan pengabdian diperoleh hasil yaitu satu produk booklet bilingual dengan informasi lokasi kedai, produk susu beserta foto, dan nomor narahubung serta meningkatnya pemahaman pengelola tentang pentingnya promosi menggunakan booklet bilingual untuk meningkatkan omset penjualan. Kata kunci: media promosi; booklet; produk susu. ABSTRACTCommunity service is one of the Tridharma of higher education that must be carried out by lecturers. This Community Service (PkM) activity was carried out in Kedai Nyosoe Cak Nanang, which is located in Kemuning Lor Village, Jember. This shop has main products of fresh milk and its processed products such as flavored milk, milkshakes, and yogurt. Its location is very strategic because it is located in the Rembangan recreation area. However, there are still many people who do not know about its products because of the lack of promotional media and the owners have limited knowledge about product promotion. The purpose of this activity was to socialize about promotional media and develop a booklet as a medium of promotion for Kedai Nyosoe Cak Nanang. The method used to overcome the problem is socialization and making promotional media for the shop. Based on the results carried out during the implementation of the service, the results obtained were one bilingual booklet product completed with information about the location of the shop, dairy products along with photos, and contact numbers as well as the staffs’ understanding about the importance of promotion using bilingual booklets to increase sales. As a language of international communication, English is taught and learned in the contexts which are not neutral from morality or values both ESL and EFL. In the classroom contexts, there are interplays among diversity related to beliefs, religions, cultures, races, genders, ages, individual dispositions, and others. In Indonesia, values inculcation is nationally managed in the curriculum to accompany the offering subjects including English. However, to what extent it has been effectively incorporated in the EFL classroom has little been investigated. This research was aimed to reveal the reality of morality included in the EFL teaching in higher education based on the lecturers’ perspectives. Interviews were done to ten lecturers who were experienced in EFL teaching in a higher education institution. The findings revealed a solid consensus on the need of morality inclusion through the EFL pedagogy and its materials, nevertheless, its practices remained implicit. The study implied the need for specific studies on theoretical frameworks and instrumentation which guide teachers to incorporate values inculcation more sufficiently and sustainably into an EFL teaching.

ABSTRAKPandemi COVID-19, telah memberikan dampak yang besar pada sistem Pendidikan di Indonesia. Pembelajaran secara daring akhirnya diterapkan dengan berbagai keterbatasan yang ada. Salah satu Madrasah Aliyah Swasta di Kabupaten Jember menerapkan pembelajaran daring dan menghadapi berbagai tantangan dalam pelaksanaanya. Beberapa permasalahan tersebut antara lain berkurangnya tingkat keaktifan siswa dan menurunnya motivasi siswa. Terutama pada pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris, siswa juga tidak mendapatkan language practices sehingga mereka tidak bisa berlatih menggunakan Bahasa target secara maksimal. Kegiatan ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan motivasi dan keaktifan dalam belajar Bahasa Inggris siswa selama masa pandemic COVID 19. Metode pelaksanaan kegiatan yaitu dengan memberikan pelatihan pembelajaran interaktif melalui gamifikasi online. Hasil dari kegiatan ini menunjukkan hasil yang positif dalam pengetahuan siswa, keterampilan keaktifan serta motivasi yang meningkat. Kata kunci: covid 19; gamifikasi online; pembelajaran. ABSTRACTThis pandemic situation of Covid-19 has impacted every aspect of life, particularly on education. The government has obliged all schools to conduct online learning. Many schools faced problems when implementing online learning. One of the schools was private Islamic High School (Madrasah Aliyah Swasta) in Jember Regency. This school was not ready in facing all changes through online learning. Due to insufficient facilities, both teachers and students only used WhatsApp application during the teaching learning process. The teacher sent the English teaching material and asked them to do all exercises. As the time passed, the students were bored and reluctant to finish all assignment. With these activities, in fact the students did not get any chances to have language practices in order to apply what they have learned in class. From this situation the Community service team carried out a training in utilizing online gamification during online learning. Kemampuan Bahasa Inggris yang baik khusunya yang berkaitan dengan proses melamar pekerjaan merupakan hal yang sangat menentukan kesuksusesan para siswa di Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan (SMK) dalam mendapatkan pekerjaan yang diinginkan terutama jika mereka ingin bekerja di perusahaan asing atau perusahaan internasional. Maka dari itu, para siswa harus mempunyai pengetahuan dan keterampilan Bahasa Inggris yang baik yang berkaitan dengan bagaimana mencari Iklan Lowongan Pekerjaan, membuat Surat Lamaran Kerja, Daftar Riwayat Hidup, dan Wawancara Kerja. Berkaitan dengan hal tersebut, maka tim pelaksana pengabdian kepada masyarakat yang terdiri dari beberapa Dosen Program Studi Bahasa Inggris Politeknik Negeri Jember melaksanakan kegiatan pelatihan kepada para siswa SMK Trunojoyo Jember tentang proses melamar pekerjaan menggunakan Bahasa Inggris. Kegiatan pelatihan ini dilaksanakan dengan menggunakan metode diskusi dan praktek langsung yaitu memberikan pemahaman kepada peserta pelatihan tentan topik materi yang disampaikan dan dilanjutkan dengan praktek langsung yang dibimbing oleh tim pelaksana pengabdian. Kegiatan pelatihan ini telah berjalan dengan baik dan lancar serta mendapat respon yang positif dari sekolah maupun dari para siswa selaku peserta kegiatan pelatihan.

The paper reports a study inspired by the notion of ecological linguistics which has much been reviewed and researched by the applied linguistics experts worldwide. In this study, Leo van Lierâ€™s notion of action-based was mainly used to describe the reality of English learning experience of university students enrolling in non-English departments. The English Courses in the departments applied MALL which was designed based on the ecological teaching principles of action-based (AB). Open-ended interviews were done to four participants to explore their perspectives on their own experience of learning English before and after joining the English courses. The data were analyzed and interpreted through narratives to unveil the elements of past, present, and future of the learning experience. Participant confirmation was carried out to increase the validity of the research findings. There was obvious evidence that the application of MALL underpinned by action-based teaching nurtured the studentsâ€™ecological learning habit which connects the English and content-subject learning. All participants perceived that such learning was firstly complicated but challenging and motivating.

The shift of paradigm in English Language Teaching (ELT) has brought teachers and practitioners to seek ways to assess their students resembling to instructional activities in the classroom. Students are not only perceived as objects of assessment but they are given a role as subjects who have big role and involvement in the assessment process. As a result, their perspectives are particularly essential because the power of assessment directly impacts on their motivation and attitudes towards schooling. This study attempted to investigate studentsâ€™ perception on the implementation of peer assessment in their process of learning English and the impacts of the assessments toward their language learning motivation and achievement. Its design was descriptive qualitative and involved 9 students of non English Department. The data was collected through intensive and in-depth interview. The result showed that the students have different dimentions of views toward peer assessment and they thought that the means of assessment implemented helps them gain their motivation and know better on what to achieve during their process of learning.
