Abstract

This present study would like to examine how women are oppressed by the patriarchal society in the selected poems written by one of the contemporary American female writers, Marge Piercy. Marge Piercy is particularly known as a female writer as well as a feminist activist. She has written numerous works, including novels and poetry books, which explore issues about women. Piercy’s poems are mostly known to be simple and vivid.  Observing the use of figurative language and the diction in Piercy’s selected poems, entitled “A Work of Artifice” and  “Barbie Doll”, in the light of feminist criticism,  this article would like to show how oppression is done towards women and how it results in the silencing, shaping, and subordinating of women. In the poems, the oppression is mostly operated subtly and systematically through various cultural institutions, such as education, family, and media. Women, as a result, are trained to believe in the voice of the patriarchal society and to behave following what the patriarchal society demands. The long-practiced oppression has hindered women to develop to their fullest as human beings. The poems can be read as a medium to voice women’s experiences and to criticize the established patriarchal system and its oppression towards women.

Abstract

Literary translation is one of the greatest obstacles to neural machine translation development (NMT). NMT precision is susceptible to common issues in literary texts, such as lexical ambiguity, complex syntax, and structural grammatical constructions. This study investigates the literary translation of three Catholic prayers: "The Sign of the Cross," "The Lord's Prayer," and "Hail Mary." These objects have been selected for their distinctive linguistic characteristics, such as archaic vocabulary, uncommon structures, and unique line breaks. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the NMT's ability to overcome obstacles in literary translation based on the number of errors produced, a discussion of the errors, and the relative difficulty of their correction, as stated by Hutchins and Somers. On the basis of Koponen's theory emphasizing semantic accuracy, the errors produced by MTs are divided into two main categories: individual concept errors and relation between concepts errors. Subcategories are subsequently created from the two categories. The quantitative data indicates that the most common individual concept error is mistranslation, while the most common relation between concepts error is misunderstanding. The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of NMT in translating the three Catholic fundamental prayers. The library and survey methods are used for this research. In library method, researchers compare multiple theories and related studies. In the meantime, for the survey, the researchers distribute questionnaires to respondents to assess the accuracy and readability of the NMT's translation.

Abstract

The people of Nologaten RT 10 RW 04 needed help, especially regarding English. This is due to parents' lack of knowledge and education levels, so they could only guide their children with minimal access to effective learning materials for learners at an early age. Learning English from an early age is necessary so that in its later development, learners will easily master English. English Letters Department of Universitas Sanata Dharma designed a community service activity, i.e., English Training for Children at Nologaten RT 10 RW 04. The series of community service activities began in February 2022 to recruit volunteers. Then the program's implementation started in July 2022 and ended in August 2022; this community service activity is expected to further strengthen the image of Universitas Sanata Dharma as a university that is concerned with the interests of the community in general and will further enhance the 3C spirit (competence, conscience, compassion) among lecturers and student volunteers, as well as to make English Letters Department of Universitas Sanata Dharma give positive impact to society. The post-test results yield increasing scores of 28% compared to the previous pre-test in all three evaluation domains (cognitive, affective, and psychomotor). They are also interested in listening to others while speaking, showing good cooperation with other group members, starting a simple English conversation, and asking questions in correct grammar.
