Abstract

Translation technology has developed so rapidly that it might replace human translation in the near future. Artificial intelligence-based translation machines increasingly resemble humans in doing translation jobs. Instagram Translate (IG Translate), for example, has shown a growing improvement in translating photo captions posted by users. Many studies have been carried out to look into IG Translate performance in various language pairs. In 2016 Instagram started providing a translation feature for its users to translate the photo captions posted by users. There is a possibility that the translations might contain errors, which are worth studying to measure the IG Translate translation performance. This study seeks to investigate Koponen’s translation errors category done by IG Translate in translating the photo captions in Jokowi's official Instagram account. The questions remain, however, whether the IG Translate performs better than a professional human translator. This research is designed to measure the translation performance by IG Translate and human translator by finding the errors possibly and to analyze the translation strategies applied by the machine and the human. The translation error analysis is expected to see the translation strategies are to find out whether the machine and the human apply different or the same strategies. The sample of the photo captions used for the analysis is from Jokowi's official Instagram account starting from March 2020 to September 2020. This range is chosen because it represents the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic and the way the government in the process of overcoming the pandemic. The research is expected to give a theoretical benefit by enriching translation research repertoire as well as a practical benefit for IG Translate developer to improve its algorithm and for social media users to input their photo captions in a way that can be translated well by the machine.

Abstract

There are 3 types of turn taking strategies, namely taking the turn, holding the turn and yielding the turn. The purpose of this study is to answer the turn taking used in the classroom with the teacher and students as the participants. This study uses a qualitative approach that analyzes the results of data captured using a video recorder. After recording the data, we do the transcription of the participant conversation based on the recorder. The transcript is based on the theory from Jefferson. Then, to analyze what type of turn taking used by the participants we used Stenstrom theory. Based on the findings in this study, it was concluded that there were several types of turn taking strategies that were not found due to circumstance and timing which were not suitable for use, including 'metacomment' and 'giving up' strategy. From this research it is found that each individual has an original character that builds a conversation with a unique pattern.

Abstract

It has been acknowledged among translators that translating literary texts poses some difficulties. The translators have to make a decision among other choices related to diction. Not only diction, the inherent literary elements must also be rendered adequately in order to achieve literariness. Although the debate whether maintaining literary elements in a way that does not deviate from the source text or creating the elements anew is far from over, it is also worth noting that the essence of translation activity is not creating an original text, but it is a re-creation of meaning, a result of translators interpretation. Researches on literary translation are mostly about to what extent the translation is able to deliver a similar literary value, the strategies applied by the translators, and how the target text readers respond to the new creation of such texts. The elaboration of how the literary translation undergoes changes or shifts is not quite an issue in the field of literary translation research because it is considered too linguistic. However, in light of the Prague School tradition which examines shifts not only on surface level, but also on discourse level, the discussion on the shifts occurring in literary translation is worth conducting.This paper tries to take a look at the translation shifts occurring in the English version of Goenawan Mohamads poem collection entitled On God and Other Unfinished Things which is translated from Bahasa Indonesia Tuhan dan Hal-hal Yang Tak Selesai, especially poems 33 by comparing the literary elements in Bahasa Indonesia and English versions. The analysis departs from category shift in micro-level analysis to the semantic, textual, pragmatic, rhetorical, and stylistic components. The result shows that there are some significant distinctions concerning the linguistic and non-linguistic discrepancies found in Gunawan Mohamads poems and their English translation.Keywords: literary text, translation shift

Abstract

The people of Nologaten RT 10 RW 04 needed help, especially regarding English. This is due to parents' lack of knowledge and education levels, so they could only guide their children with minimal access to effective learning materials for learners at an early age. Learning English from an early age is necessary so that in its later development, learners will easily master English. English Letters Department of Universitas Sanata Dharma designed a community service activity, i.e., English Training for Children at Nologaten RT 10 RW 04. The series of community service activities began in February 2022 to recruit volunteers. Then the program's implementation started in July 2022 and ended in August 2022; this community service activity is expected to further strengthen the image of Universitas Sanata Dharma as a university that is concerned with the interests of the community in general and will further enhance the 3C spirit (competence, conscience, compassion) among lecturers and student volunteers, as well as to make English Letters Department of Universitas Sanata Dharma give positive impact to society. The post-test results yield increasing scores of 28% compared to the previous pre-test in all three evaluation domains (cognitive, affective, and psychomotor). They are also interested in listening to others while speaking, showing good cooperation with other group members, starting a simple English conversation, and asking questions in correct grammar.

Abstract

In the realm of translation, balancing the preservation of meaning and style while adapting to the linguistic and cultural context of the target language is crucial. This study investigates the application of Vinay and Darbelnet's concepts of servitude and option, referred to as "procedures," in the Indonesian translation of Terman's children's book, By Balloon to the Sahara. This study examines instances of servitude, illustrating the obligatory changes the translator made due to inherent differences between the source and target languages. These changes, driven by grammatical correctness and naturalness, are necessary to create a coherent and accessible translation for Indonesian readers. The research also explores instances of option, showcasing the translator's non-obligatory choices, which reflect their personal style, preferences, or a shift in emphasis. The findings of this study highlight the importance of understanding and applying the concepts of servitude and option as translation procedures, particularly in children's literature, where comprehension and readability are of paramount importance. By employing these procedures, translators can produce engaging and accessible translations that preserve the original text's meaning and style while catering to the linguistic and cultural context of the target audience. This study contributes to the field of translation studies by demonstrating the effectiveness of servitude and option in the translation of children's literature, paving the way for future research in this area.

Abstract

As a means of facilitating access to knowledge and information, translation is critical in providing access to a wide range of subjects, particularly literature. The essence of translation in literature is crucial since, other than making literary work accessible all across the globe; it also enables writers to express themselves across cultures and generations while simultaneously influencing the reader's interpretation of literary works. As an instance of a translation product, the novel, which is a form of literature, can be cited as an example. The process of translating a novel is not just a matter of transferring language but also of disseminating its figurative language as well as determining the appropriate expressions to capture the emotions of the original work. However, translating a novel is more complicated than translating another genre of literature since a writer mainly utilizes a myriad of figurative language in their writing. As a result of this, there is likely an expression shift during the translation of figurative language. Examining expression shifts, which are changes in the way figurative language or expressions are presented when translated from one language to another, in the translation of figurative language within novels is highly relevant, as understanding these shifts can lead to improved translation practices, foster a deeper appreciation of cultural nuances, and better preserve the author's intended meaning across languages. This study strives to discover what types of expression shifts are present in the English translation of the figurative language in Leila S. Chudori's Laut Bercerita. Subsequently, this study is designed to analyze how figurative language is shifting in terms of its values of expression during translation. The data for the analysis are taken from Laut Bercerita (2017) by Leila S. Chudori, along with its English version titled The Sea Speaks His Name (2020), translated by John McGlynn. This novel is selected due to its figurative that is well-written, well-imagined, and easily discernible by readers of all backgrounds. In this study, a contribution will also be made to the field of translation studies, with an emphasis on the shift in expression during the translation of figurative language within a novel.

Abstract

Subtitling and dubbing are crucial translation services that enable viewers to enjoy content from different countries without language barriers. The quality of these translations significantly impacts the viewing experience. This study aims to (1) analyze the translation strategies employed by machine translators (MT) and human translators (HT) in subtitling and dubbing, and (2) identify and categorize translation errors concept of declarative utterances by the protagonist in the Superbook series titled Jonah. The research employs Gottlieb's theory of subtitling strategies and Koponen's theory of error translation. The data collection and analysis involve library research to gather expert information and explicatory research for an in-depth examination of the translations. This approach allows for a comprehensive understanding of the translation processes and potential improvements in the subtitling and dubbing industries. The results reveal 23 errors in both machine and human translations. Dubbing errors predominantly involve substituted concepts (8), indicating contextually appropriate or valid word replacements chosen by human translators. In contrast, subtitling errors frequently involve mistranslated concepts (3), suggesting inaccuracies in machine translations. Human translators in dubbing often use paraphrase (5) strategies to enhance translation efficiency and address unreconstructed patterns in the source text. Machine translators in subtitling predominantly employ the transfer strategy (10), retaining the source language words in the target language without alteration. This study highlights the importance of understanding translation strategies and errors in subtitling and dubbing to improve translation quality and enhance the viewing experience for audiences worldwide.

Abstract

Translation shifts occur when content is translated from one language to another, due to either target language structure constraints (servitude) or translators' choices (options). With the growing use of machine translation services like Instagram Translate and Twitter Auto Translate on social media, understanding these shifts is important for effective cross-cultural communication. This study aims to compare translation shifts in the English translations of Jokowi's Instagram and Twitter accounts, focusing in the performance of these machine translation services. The research will analyze a sample of posts from Jokowi's Instagram and Twitter accounts, translated by Instagram Translate and Twitter Auto Translate. The study will use a combination of quantitative and qualitative analysis to identify different types of shifts, such as level shifts and category shifts, and to determine whether they result from servitude or optional choices made by the translation algorithms. Additionally, the research will assess the accuracy and idiomatic quality of the translations produced by these services, considering potential challenges related to context, idiomatic expressions, and cultural references. The findings will help improve understanding of machine translation performance in social media contexts and inform future improvements to translation algorithms. By examining translation shifts in Jokowi's Instagram and Twitter accounts, this study seeks to enhance communication and understanding on social media platforms across language barriers. The research also aims to provide valuable insights for users of machine translation services, particularly within the rapidly changing domain of social media platforms.

Abstract

Understanding computer systems in a foreign language can be challenging, leading users to rely on machine translation tools to overcome language barriers. However, the effectiveness of these tools varies, so it is crucial to assess their performance. This study aims to evaluate the translation accuracy of two popular machine translations, Google Translate and ChatGPT, by examining the errors they produce. The research uses Koponen's translation error category. The study focuses on translating the installation GUI texts of Windows 11 Education into Indonesian. The main objective is to determine the error categories and their distribution in the translations created by Google Translate and ChatGPT. The findings will help developers improve their translation algorithms and guide users in choosing the most appropriate translation system for specific situations, especially when dealing with computer systems. The research identified five error categories from six categories proposed by Koponen in the translations generated by Google Translate and ChatGPT. A total of 29 errors were found, distributed as follow: omitted concepts (17.24%), added concepts (24.13%), untranslated concepts (20.68%), mistranslated concepts (3.44%), and substituted concept (34.48%). In term of relation error only one type is found, that is added participant. This study provides valuable insights into the performance of widely used machine translation tools in real-world situations, emphasizing areas for improvement to enhance their accuracy and reliability, ultimately benefiting both developers and end-users.
